Population-influenced spatiotemporal pattern of natural disaster and social crisis in China, AD1–1910

Researchers mostly ascribe contemporary natural disaster and the concomitant social crisis to anomalous climate change or global warming. However, whether such a relationship is still valid in long-term historical settings remains doubtful. In this study, data obtained from historical records about natural calamities(flood and drought) and their social impacts(famine,cannibalism, and war) at provincial and decadal scales during AD1–1910 are applied to mathematical statistics such as correlation and regression analysis as well as spatial visualization. Also, the role of population in the nexus of meteorological catastrophes and human miseries is investigated. Results show that at the provincial scale, generally there is high consistency among different variables and most of them are clustered in eastern part of China, especially in the north. More in-depth examinations indicate regional disparities that variables account for higher proportion in the south during the later imperial era,which may be attributed to the southward movement of population center. At the decadal scale, drought is the primary contributor to famine and cannibalism, while severe or even out-of-control famine i.e. cannibalism is more likely to incur war than ordinary famine per se. Besides, population growth rate exerts its positive effect on natural hazards and food crises, whereas more wars bring population loss and relieve population stress despite the weak negative association. These findings supplement previous views and confirm that the distributions of disasters in ancient China are affected by population rather than climatic variability, which only determines the occurrence of disaster.

Cytomegalovirus （CMV） colitis rarely occurs in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of disabling and life threatening diarrhea in an immunocompetent elderly woman due to CMV colitis. The diagnosis of CMV was based on histological examination of tissues biopsied at colonoscopy, positive CMV antigen and high CMV-lgM titer in peripheral blood samples and a good response to systemic gancyclovir treatment. We conclude that CMV should be considered in the differential diagnosis of colitis in elderly immunocompetent patients.

It is now commonly accepted that the unit disk graph used to model the physical layer in wireless networks does not reflect real radio transmissions, and that a more realistic model should be considered for experimental simulations. Previous work on realistic scenarios has been focused on unicast, however broadcast requirements are fundamentally different and cannot be derived from the unicast case. Therefore, the broadcast protocols must be adapted in order to still be efficient under realistic assumptions. In this paper, we study the well-known multipoint relay broadcast protocol （MPR）, in which each node has to choose a set of 1-hop neighbors to act as relays in order to cover the whole 2-hop neighborhood. We give experimental results showing that the original strategy used to select these multipoint relays does not suit a realistic model. On the basis of these results, we propose new selection strategies solely based on link quality. One of the key aspects of our solutions is that our strategies do not require any additional hardware and may be implemented at the application layer, which is particularly relevant to the context of ad hoc and sensor networks where energy savings are mandatory. We finally provide new experimental results that demonstrate the superiority of our strategies under realistic physical assumptions.

The synergistic study of Acacia Senegal (arabic gum) and Anacardium occidentale (cashew gum) combination in corrosion inhibition of mild steel was carried out to determine the inhibition efficiency of their combination. The gums were purified using standard methods and the blend prepared using the method as described by Femi – Oyewo et al. The blend was then used for corrosion study at two temperatures (303 K and 333 K) and the corrosion rates calculated. The adsorption process was found to satisfy the Langmuir isotherm and hence the sorption study reveals that the interaction is a physical one since the free energy of adsorption (ΔG^(o) ads kJ/mol) is given as (−16.47 and −15.61) kJ/mol at temperature T = 303 K and 333K accordingly. The GCMS technique was used to characterize the blend, five chemical compounds and their area percentage [6-O-(1-L-maloyl)-alpha-,beta-D-Glcp (veracylglucan A) (22.11%), 6-Octadecanoic acid (55.76%), Methylhexadecanoate (3.97%), 1-Pentadecane carboxylic acid (10.78%) and 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (7.38%)] were identified and subjected to computation corrosion study, the binding energy for the constituents of the blend on Fe surface were computed using Accelrys Material Studio and the mean values were found to be −327.097 kJ/mol, −446.943 kJ/mol, −602.826 kJ/mol, −608.625 kJ/mol and −693.749 kJ/mol respectively.

Shot peening induces residual compressive stresses on metallic substrates, often used to decrease fatigue crack growth. The relationship between surface roughness and the magnitude of the stress can be affected by peening media size or the extent of peening. Generally, an ideal condition from shot peening would be a high compressive residual stress and a low surface roughness, but these tend to be inversely *** study proposes a method for decreasing roughness and increasing residual stress concurrently using a distribution of shot sizes in a single shot peening passage based on finite element modeling that has been calibrated using by experimental results. Numerical models predict mixed shot sizes will create a smoother surface than using monodispersed shot at 100 % coverage. The residual stress profile for mixed shot sizes showed a broad range of compressive residual stresses in comparison with the largest impact ball size. This newly proposed method can improve the surface quality and the extent of the compressive residual stresses in a single-shot peening passage.
