Prophylactic uses of integrin CD18-βA peptide in a murine polymicrobial peritonitis model

AIM:To evaluate the prophylactic properties of integrin CD18-βA peptide in a murine model of abdominal polymicrobial peritonitis and ***:Bacterial sepsis was induced in Institute of Cancer Research(ICR) mice by cecal ligation and puncture(CLP) *** mice were then injected with either sterile saline or CD18-βA peptide intraperitoneally at 2 h after surgery,and were sacrificed at 12 and 24 h after *** samples were immediately collected,and analyzed for endotoxin activity and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α and interleukin(IL)-*** and liver were studied for CD45+ leukocyte and CD3 mRNA *** expression of intercellular adhesion molecule(ICAM)-1,vascular cell adhesion molecule(VCAM) and E-selectin was also ***:Intraperitoneal injection of CD18-βA peptide significantly suppressed circulating endotoxin activity(P<0.01) at 24 h,as well as serum levels of TNF-α(P<0.05 at 12 and 24 h) and IL-6(P<0.01 at 12 h,P<0.05 at 24 h) in CLP-inflicted ***18-βA peptide also abrogated leukocyte infiltration into liver and lungs as unveiled by reduced CD45+ leukocyte and CD3 mRNA ***,the peptide significantly reduced pulmonary expression of VCAM(P<0.01 at 12 h,P<0.001 at 24 h),E-selectin(P<0.01 at 12 and 24 h),and ICAM-1(P<0.01 at 12 h,P<0.001 at 24 h).These actions of CD18-βA peptide collectively protected septic mice against lethality(P<0.01).CONCLUSION:CD18-βA peptide is a potent endotoxin antagonist that can protect surgical patients against sepsis-associated lethality.

Percutaneous transluminal stenting in patients with carotid artery stenosis

Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of percutaneous transluminal stenting for patients with carotid artery *** Selective percutaneous transluminal stenting was performed for patients with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis(luminal narrowing ≥ 70%).Success rates and complications associated with the procedures were *** six months of follow-up,both recurrent symptom and restenosis rates were *** There were 17 bifurcating lesions among 27 stenoses in 26 patients,of whom 18 had concomitant coronary artery *** acute procedural success rate was 96.3%(26/27),and the degree of stenosis was reduced from 88.6% ± 8.9%(range 70 - 100)to 0.4% ± 2.0%(range 0 - 10).Six patients developed severe bradycardia and hypotension,and 3 experienced transient loss of consciousness during balloon *** hospitalization,2 patients experienced loss of consciousness and convulsion,respectively,due to hyperperfusion,and both recovered 12 hours *** were 2 minor stroke cases (7.4%)but no cases of major stroke or *** the 6-month follow-up,there were no cases of TIA or new onset of *** was no restenosis detected in 16 cases using angiography and in 10 cases using MRI in 6 to 16 months of *** Percutaneous transluminal stenting for patients with carotid artery stenosis has a high procedural success rate with few and acceptable *** patients suffered from recurrent symptoms or showed restenosis in long-term follow-up.

Women and Cardiovascular Disease: Gender-Based Issues Regarding Detection and Primary Prevention

Society has come a long way over the past several decades from the old fashion belief that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a man’s disease. Throughout the years, gender-based studies have provided compelling evidence to uncover several unique features in disease presentation, pathology and primary prevention in women. Studies reviewing differences among men and women have placed specific emphasis on cardiovascular risk factors, symptoms and vascular pathology as potential etiologies for the higher cardiovascular mortality and disability among women. In addition, although weight loss and exercise have been shown to promote cardiovascular health in men, more recently findings have presented data to support the importance of these interventions among women. Although tremendous strides have been made throughout the years in the gender-based cardiovascular research, more questions than answers remain and additional research efforts are still needed to better understand the disease process in women. The objectives of this review are two-fold: First, to present a comparative analysis focusing on evidence-based similarities and differences among males and females in cardiovascular disease presentation, detection and clinical pathology;Second, to offer insights highlighting recent findings regarding primary prevention and treatment protocols in women. Based on our current knowledge, continued efforts geared toward optimal diagnostic testing and screening protocols for primary disease detection and risk factor modification programs are recommended. This would include further investigations of the potential role that genetics and/or environment play/plays in the natural progression of the disease process. Additionally, comprehensive lifestyle interventions aimed at reducing cardiovascular disability and mortality in women is also recommended.

Detection of Environmental Toxins in Mixed Matrices of Tap Water, Soil, Food Waste, Serum and Milk Using Hememics Biosensor

Exposure to toxins can lead to a wide range of adverse health effects, including respiratory problems, neurological disorders, cancer, and reproductive issues. Toxins can come from various sources, such as industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and household chemicals. Therefore, detecting and monitoring toxins in the environment is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of Hememics biosensor system in detecting environmental toxins such as Ricin and Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in mixed matrixes. When Ricin and SEB are spiked into soil, chopped lettuce, tap water, milk and serum, the biosensor was able to detect these toxins, without sample processing, at a level of detection comparable to lab testing with high sensitivity and specificity. Furthermore, Hememics biosensor system is designed to be network-enabled, which means that results can be transmitted to relevant agencies for quick decisions. This feature is crucial in cases where quick action is needed to prevent further contamination or exposure to harmful toxins.

Long Term Clinical and Angiographic Outcome Following Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty and Stent Placement for Iliac and Femoral Artery Stenosis

Objective This study reportsthe initial and late results of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) and intravascular stenting for atherosclerotic stenosis of the iliac and femoral arteries. Methods and Results From December 1994 to March 1997, we performed iliac and femoral artery angioplasty and primary intravascular stent placement in 37 vessel of 33 patients (19 men and 14 women; mean age, 70. 5 years). A total of 43 self - expanding Wallstents (Boston, Inc. ) were deployed. All patients underwent angioplasty and stent placement successfully. Clinical follow - up was available for all patients at a mean of 26±14months. All patient clinical is-chemic category (claudication or rest pain) was improved. Angiographic follow - up was completed for 17 of 23 patients at a mean follow-up of 10±5 months, The iliac artery restenosis rate was 0(0/8). The femoral artery restenosis rate was 33 % (3/9), All 3 patients underwent repeat balloon angioplasty successfully. Conclusion The iliac and femoral arteries can be performed and reasonable early and late patency rates.

The effect of renal artery stenting on hypertension and renal function in patients with atherosclerotic renovascular disease

Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of percutaneous transluminal renalr stenting (PTRS) on hypertension and renal function in patients with atherosclerotic renovascular *** A total of 147 stents were deployed in 147 lesions of 135 consecutive patients for poorly controlled hypertension or preservation of renal function. Clinical follow-up of the effect of the procedure on renal function, blood pressure control, number of antihypertensive medications, and survival was performed in 128 (95%) patients after 22±14 months. Angiographic follow-up were performed in 70% of the patients at 7.24-5.6 months after PTRS. Results The immediate technical success was 100%. At 22±14 months, systolic and diastolic blood pressures significantly decreased (from 172±23 to 159±20 mm Hg and from 93±16 to 85±13 mm Hg, respectively; Phose renal function was impaired initially (Serum creatinine concentration (SCC) >130 μmol/L), SCC was improved in 25%, became stabilized in 48% and continued to deteriorate in 27%. When SCC was <130 μtmol/L, 97% of the patients remained stabilized, while only 2 patients, SCC deteriorated by 22 months. The cumulative probability of survival was 96% (129/135) at 22 months, with 3 deaths related to end-stage renal disease. The in-stentrestenosis rate was 7.4% (7/95) at a mean follow up of 7.2±5.6 *** In patients with atherosclerotic renal-artery stenosis, PTRS could beneficially affect blood pressure control and may improve or prevent further deterioration of renal function.
