INTERIM ANALYSIS OF ACUPUNCTURE PROVES BLINDING IN A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL IS FEASIBLE IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Objective: The use of alternative therapies in the intensive care unit(ICU) is infrequent in the United *** has been proven to reduce pain, swelling, nausea, and sedative use for *** hypothesized that acupuncture would reduce sedative and analgesic requirements during mechanical ventilation(MV) with fewer side effects, and decrease length of MV and length of ICU ***, we hypothesized that acupuncture can be effectively blinded in the ***: A randomized controlled trial was conducted randomly assigning patients in the ICU to verum or sham *** were compared between the two groups using descriptive *** analysis using Mann-Whitney-U tests was used on all continuous ***: Fourteen enrolled patients were included in the interim analysis, 8 males(57%) and 6 females(43%).Verum and sham groups had similar vital signs when compared over all sessions: heart rate(97.2 vs.93.8; P=0.78), systolic blood pressure(110.2 vs.116.4; P=0.47), respiratory rate(16.8 vs.14.2; P=0.36) and RASS score(-1.3 vs.-2.7; P=0.52).No significance was found when assessing age(51 vs.50; P=0.79), APACHE score(15 vs.10.5; P=0.1), number of completed sessions(3 vs.2.5; P=0.37), or time to first acupuncture session(20 h vs.18.2 h; P=0.89).Although without statistically significant(P=0.69), large variation was demonstrated in time to extubation(65.3 h vs.138.3 h).Blinding proved successful as there was no significant difference between groups(P=0.77).Conclusion: Blinding in a randomized controlled trial of acupuncture in the ICU is feasible.

RESIDENTIAL STORMWATER:METHODS FOR DECREASING RUNOFF AND INCREASING STORMWATER INFILTRATION

INTRODUCTION Humans and plants depend on an adequate supply of clean water for numerous reasons,from food production to sustaining terrestrial and aquatic *** average Virginia resident uses about 47 gallons(178 L)of fresh water daily(VDEQ 2008).While a majority of Virginians are provided water from a centralized,public utility,there are nearly two million Virginia residents who depend on well water as their main source(VDH 2008).Replenishing groundwater withdrawals depends on recharge(water moving from the surface to groundwater)from infiltration of precipitation through permeable surfaces in the environment;an important part of the hydrologic,or water,cycle(VDEQ 2010).Forests and grasslands provide much of the available recharge area due to their high capacities to infiltrate ***,the urbanization process is rapidly converting forested areas and grasslands to commercial,residential,or industrial *** conversion creates a significant increase in impervious surfaces such as concrete,asphalt,building roofs,and even compacted vegetated sites(*** 2003).Impervious surfaces decrease infiltration and groundwater *** also generate increases in stormwater runoff;defined as any precipitation from a rain or snow event that flows off of an impervious *** water runs off urban impervious surfaces,it picks up sediment,oils,debris,nutrients,chemicals,and *** runoff is then collected in a conveyance system,transported,and discharged to surface waters such as creeks and rivers;most of the time without any type of water quality treatment(*** 2003;Paul and Meyer 2001).In addition to carrying pollutants,the runoff is also typically warmer than the receiving surface *** increased volume and velocity of the stormwater runoff erodes soil and stream channels and can lead to stream“blow out.”Water quality is degraded and aquatic habitats are adversely altered(Meyer,et al.2005,Booth and Jackson 1997).Due to the interc

Ridge-furrow rainwater harvesting(RFRH)is known to be effective in controlling water loss and soil erosion,and increasing soil moisture and crop yield in semiarid ***,it can cause water-logging,ridge overtopping,and harvest failure if not properly designed.A four consecutive-year field trial was carried out to assess the impacts of various slope gradients and tillage practices on soil moisture,runoff,sediment yield,associated soil nutrient losses,fodder yield,and water use efficiency(WUE)of alfalfa in the Loess Plateau,*** trial adopted a split-plot design,taking slope gradient(5and 10)as main plot treatment and tillage practice(traditional tillage,open-ridging,and tied-ridging)as split-plot treatment,from 2015 to *** were greater variations in runoff,sediment yield,and associ-ated soil nutrient losses than in fodder yield and ***-ridging and open-ridging resulted in decreased runoff and reduced sediment transport and associated soil nutrient losses,and increased soil moisture,fodder yield,and ***,sediment transport,and associated soil nutrient losses inclined with increasing slope;while fodder yield and the WUE *** slopes of 5and 10,the average decrease in runoff,sediment yield,total nitrogen,total phosphorus,and organic matter losses for open-ridging were 47.7e56.2%,91.0e92.7%,90.4e93.1%,90.1e92.2%,and 88.9e90.2%,respectively,while these for tied-ridging were 62.4e68.4%,94.5e96.4%,93.6e95.5%,93.9e95.9%,and 93.0e94.9%,over 4 years as compared with traditional *** mean annual runoff,sediment,total nitrogen,total phosphorus,and organic matter losses for slopes of 10were 1.31,1.96,1.87,1.99,and 1.64 times greater than the corresponding values for slopes of 5,*** increase of fodder yield and WUE for open-ridging and tied-ridging was 40.1e45.6%and 16.0e17.5%,and 3.66e5.99 and 1.35e2.50 kg ha^(-1)mm^(-1),respectively,for slopes of 5and 10.The average fodder yield and WUE for slopes of 5were 1.19
