Mount Bambouto is a polygenic stratovolcano of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, built between 21 Ma and 4.5 Ma. It is situated approximately 200 km NE of Mount Cameroon, between 09° 55＇ and 10°15＇ longitude east and, 05°25＇ and 05°50＇ latitude north. The volcano covers an area of 500 km^2 and culminates at 2740 m at Meletan dome and bears a collapsed caldera at the summit （13 × 8 km）. Mount Bambouto is characterized by several natural hazards of different origins： meteorological, such as landslides and rock falls; anthropogenic, such as bushfires, tribal wars and deforestation; and volcanological, such as volcanic eruption. The thematic map shows that 55-60% of the caldera has high probability of occurrence of mass movement. The caldera has a high population density （3000 inhabitants）, which increases the level of risk, evaluated at approximately $US3.8 million for patrimony, 3000 civilian deaths and destruction of biodiversity.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNgCs). However, the use of tNgCs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNgC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNgCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNgCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNgCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNgCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovascular formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNgCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNgCs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNgCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. The research also encompassed bespoke measurement technology for nanoparticles and structure interactions. Significant research outcomes are summarised. The paper illustrates the advantages from industrially motivated research and value of collective action between a broad group of researchers in a nation.

The thermal induced topography change in a model system consisting of a polymer film on a Si substrate capped by a thin metal layer has been studied by using AFM. Regular lateral patterns over large areas were observed on the surface when the system was heated to a sufficiently high temperature. 2D-FFT analysis to the AFM images indicates that the patterns are isotropic and have well defined periodicities. The periodicities of the characteristic patterns are found to depend strongly on the annealing temperature. The study of the kinetics of the formation reveals that such a topography forms almost instantaneously once the critical temperature is reached. It is suggested that this wave-like surface morphology is driven by the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch of the different layers. This method for generating regular wave-like patterns could be used as a general method for patterning various organic materials into micro/nanostructures.

Students at California State University(CSU),Chico designed,built,and tested an off-grid solar powered tiny house and competed in the 2016 Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s(SMUD)Tiny House *** tier research institutions,predominantly undergraduate universities,and community colleges from all over California competed against one another in a variety of performance and aesthetic events in SMUD’s first ever *** of the main goals of the CSU,Chico’s Tiny House was to design and implement an autonomous energy management system to maximize energy capture,use,and efficiency and provide a seamless,comfortable,and uninterrupted indoor living *** system,smart residential energy management system(SREMS),was designed to monitor and sense solar energy collected and stored,indoor heating and cooling loads,occupant cooking and personal water heating needs,and electrical outlets and to determine and allow energy related activities given the amount of stored *** and heat transfer models were developed to predict heating,cooling,and appliance *** models were used to size the solar array,battery storage,and *** was installed in the tiny house and its performance was tested and validated during the week long SMUD Tiny House *** showed close correlation with the predicted energy requirements of the models,and the tiny house maintained net-zero energy use even during overcast and rainy skies throughout the three-day *** CSU,Chico team won best control system and best technology at the statewide *** paper describes the design,installation and testing results of CSU,Chico’s Tiny House SREMS.

Sepsis has recently been defined as'life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection'. A great amount of effort has been made to develop early treatments for sepsis through the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. There are similar but slightly different recommendations for the treatment of sepsis in the pediatric population. These international efforts have led to earlier diagnosis and treatments for sepsis that have led to improvements in survival. Sepsis is also the leading cause of death in the burn patient but most clinical sepsis studies have excluded burns. The reason for the exclusion is that the sepsis found in burn patients is different than that of the general population. The early treatment strategies, such as those directed by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, focus on patients presenting to hospitals with recent signs of infection. Burn patients lose their primary barrier to infection, the skin, and thus the risk of infection persists as long as that barrier is absent. Efforts have been made to define sepsis, septic shock and infection in the burn population but there is constant need for revisions. One focus of this review is to discuss the differences in burn sepsis versus sepsis of the general population. Children often have profound responses to sepsis but can also make remarkable recoveries. This review will also explore problems specific to pediatric burns. The treatment of burns requires a continuous vigilance to watch for the subtle early signs of sepsis and then expeditious initiation of aggressive therapy. Strategies covering optimal management of pediatric burn sepsis will also be summarized.

A novel organic-inorganic composite, sorbic acid intercalated zinc aluminum layered double hydroxides (SA-ZnAl-LDHs) has been successfully assembled by a sim- ple direct coprecipitation method. A holistic approach in- cluding normal XRD, FT-IR, and UV-Vis measurements and simultaneous Tg/DTA/MS and in situ HT-XRD techniques was employed to explore the supramolecular intercalation structure and the thermal decomposition properties of as-synthesized SA-ZnAl-LDHs material.

Sensor-based ore sorting is a technology used to classify high-grade mineralized rocks from low-grade waste rocks to reduce operation *** ore-sorting algorithms using color images have been proposed in the past,but only some validate their results using mineral grades or optimize the algorithms to classify rocks in *** paper presents an ore-sorting algorithm based on image processing and machine learning that is able to classify rocks from a gold and silver mine based on their *** algorithm is composed of four main stages:(1)image segmentation and partition,(2)color and texture feature extraction,(3)sub-image classification using neural networks,and(4)a voting system to determine the overall class of the *** algorithm was trained using images of rocks that a geologist manually classified according to their mineral content and then was validated using a different set of rocks analyzed in a laboratory to determine their gold and silver *** proposed method achieved a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.961 points,higher than other classification algorithms based on support vector machines and convolutional neural networks,and a processing time under 44 ms,promising for real-time ore sorting applications.
