Migration departure strategies of shorebirds at a final pre-breeding stopover site

Background: Departure decisions and behaviors of migratory birds at stopover sites are expected to maximize fit?ness by trade?offs among avoiding predators, optimizing refueling(energy) capacity, and matching other life?history events. We predict that species with different body sizes and migratory destinations will exhibit different behaviors when departing from the same stopover site. We also predict that with strong time constraint at the final pre?breed?ing stopover site, departure decisions may be less sensitive to exogenous factors, such as wind condition, compared to other stopover or nonbreeding ***: We recorded migratory departures of four shorebird species, i.e. Eurasian Curlew(Numenius arquata), Bar?tailed Godwit(Limosa lapponica), Great Knot(Calidris tenuirostris), and Grey Plover(Pluvialis squatarola), at Yaluji?ang Estuary Wetlands in China, a final pre?breeding stopover site in the northern Yellow sea, from 2011 to 2014. We compared flock sizes, departure time and departure directions between species, and investigated the effects of tide and weather conditions(rain and ground wind speed and direction) on the departure decision of ***: We found that larger species departed in smaller flocks and were more variable in daily departure time. Departure trajectory of all four species appeared to be influenced by coastal topography. With the east–west coast?line and intertidal mudflat on the south, birds exhibited westward or eastward deflection from the shortest migra?tory routes. Bar?tailed Godwit was the only species that deviated to the southeast and did not climb over the land. China’s coastal wetlands provide breeding,migration stopover,and wintering habitats for about 230 waterbird species,which is more than a quarter of all waterbirds in the ***-scale and high intensity human activities have resulted in serious loss and degradation of coastal wetlands over the past half century,causing population declines in many *** a literature review and expert surveys,this article reviews conservation measures taken in recent decades to protect waterbirds in China’s coastal wetlands and provides recommendations for future conservation action from three aspects:policy and administration,habitat conservation and management,and multiparty *** the past decades,many conservation legislation,regulations and action plans at the national level and more site-specific measures and interventions have been implemented,with notable improvement in the effectiveness in policy making and multi-stakeholder ***,some threats to waterbirds have been mitigated and many key sites for waterbirds have been designated as strictly protected nature ***,some critical issues still remain,mostly related to habitat conservation and management,such as coastal wetland restoration,control of invasive spartina alterniflora,control of environmental pollution,and improvement of artificial habitat *** highlight that protecting natural tidal wetlands and improving habitat quality are critical for the conservation of coastal waterbirds,especially those highly dependent on the intertidal *** has demonstrated strong commitment to ecological conservation and restoration for the future,in terms of both funding and policies for biodiversity and wetland *** is important that this commitment to conserve coastal waterbirds is supported continuously by science-and evidence-based decisions and actions.

Genotype specific peripheral lipid profile changes with hepatitis C therapy

AIM To evaluate magnitude/direction of changes in peripheral lipid profiles in patients undergoing direct acting therapy for hepatitis C by *** Mono-infected patients with hepatitis C were treated with guideline-based DAAs at a university-based liver clinic. Patient characteristics and laboratory values were collected before and after the treatment period. Baseline demographics included age, ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, treatment regimen, and fibrosis stage. Total cholesterol(TCHOL), high density lipoprotein(HDL), low density lipoprotein(LDL), triglycerides(TG), and liver function tests were measured prior to treatment and ETR. Changes in lipid and liver function were evaluated by subgroups with respect to genotype. Mean differences were calculated for each lipid profile and liver function component(direction/magnitude). The mean differences in lipid profiles were then compared between genotypes for differences in direction/magnitude. Lipid profile and liver function changes were evaluated with Levene's test and student's t test. Mean differences in lipid profiles were compared between genotypes using ANOVA, post hoc analysis via the Bonferroni correction or Dunnett *** Three hundred and seventy five patients enrolled with 321(85.6%) achieving sustained-viral response at 12 wk. 72.3% were genotype 1(GT1), 18.1% genotype 2(GT2), 9.7% genotype 3(GT3). Baseline demographics were similar. significant change in lipid profiles were seen with GT1 and GT3(ΔGT1, p and ΔGT3, p), with TCHOL increasing(+5.3, P = 0.005 and +16.1, P sing(+12.5, P sing(+7.4, P = 0.058 and +12.5, P sing(-5.9, P = 0.044 and-9.80 P = 0.067). Among genotypes(ΔGT1 v. ΔGT2 v. ΔGT3, ANOVA), significant mean differences were seen with TCHOL(+5.3 v. +0.1 v. +16.1, P = 0.017) and HDL(+12.3 v. +2 v. +7.9, P = 0.040). Background:The application and feasibility of minimally invasive liver resection(MILR)for huge liver tumours(≥10 cm)has not been well ***:Retrospective analysis of data on 6,617 patients who had MILR for liver tumours were gathered from 21 international centers between *** tumors and large tumors were defined as tumors with a size≥10.0 cm and 3.0-9.9 cm based on histology,respectively.1:1 coarsened exact-matching(CEM)and 1:2 Mahalanobis distance-matching(MDM)was performed according to clinically-selected *** discontinuity analyses were performed as an additional line of sensitivity analysis to estimate local treatment effects at the 10-cm tumor size ***:Of 2,890 patients with tumours≥3 cm,there were 205 huge *** 1:1 CEM,174 huge tumors were matched to 174 large tumors;and after 1:2 MDM,190 huge tumours were matched to 380 large *** was significantly and consistently increased intraoperative blood loss,frequency in the application of Pringle maneuver,major morbidity and postoperative stay in the huge tumour group compared to the large tumour group after both 1:1 CEM and 1:2 *** findings were reinforced in RD *** blood transfusion rate and open conversion rate were significantly higher in the huge tumor group after only 1:2 MDM but not 1:1 ***:MILR for huge tumours can be safely performed in expert centers It is an operation with substantial complexity and high technical requirement,with worse perioperative outcomes compared to MILR for large tumors,therefore judicious patient selection is pivotal.

AIM: To investigate the performance of Gadofluorine P-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) on the diagnosis of diabetes in a streptozotocin(sTZ)-induced diabetic rat ***: Fischer 344 rats were treated with *** not treated with sTZ served as controls. The normalized signal intensity(sI) and the enhancement ratio(ER) of the pancreas were measured at each time point, and the values were compared between the normal and diabetic rats using the Mann-Whitney test. In addition,the values were correlated with the mean islet *** cut-off values were calculated using a positive test based on receiver operating *** Gd concentration after the injection of each contrast media was measured using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in a separate set of rats(4 diabetic rats, 4 controls for Gadofluorine P; 2, 2 for Gd-DOTA).REsULTs: The normalized sI and ER of the pancreas using Gd-DOTA were not significantly different between diabetic rats and controls. With Gadofluorine P, the values were significantly higher in the diabetic rats than in the control rats 30 min after injection(P stic curve that differentiated diabetic rats from the control group was greater for Gadofluorine P than for Gd-DOTA(0.967 vs 0.667, P = 0.085). An increase in normalized sI 30 min after Gadofluorine P was correlated with a decrease in the mean number of islets(r 2 = 0.510, P = 0.014). Genome-edited human induced pluripotent stem cells(iPsCs)hold great promise for therapeutic ***,low editing efficiency has hampered the applications of CRIsPR-Cas9 technology in creating knockout and homology-directed repair(HDR)-edited iPsC lines,particularly for silent *** is partially due to chromatin compaction,inevitably limiting Cas9 access to the target *** the six HDAC inhibitors we examined,vorinostat,or suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid(sAHA),led to the highest HDR efficiency at both open and closed loci,with acceptable *** inhibitors equally increased non-homologous end joining(NHEJ)editing efficiencies(~50%)at both open and closed loci,due to the considerable HDAC inhibitor-mediated increase in Cas9 and sgRNA ***,we observed more substantial HDR efficiency improvement at closed loci relative to open chromatin(2.8 vs.1.7-fold change).These studies provide a new strategy for HDRediting of silent genes in iPsCs.

How are those “lost to follow-up” patients really doing? A compliance comparison in arthroplasty patients

AIM: To determine whether there is a functional difference between patients who actively follow-up in the office(Ofu) and those who are non-compliant with office follow-up visits(Nfu). METHODs: We reviewed a consecutive group of 588patients, who had undergone total joint arthroplasty(TJA), for compliance and functional outcomes at one to two years post-operatively. All patients were given verbal instructions by the primary surgeon to return at one year for routine follow-up visits. Patients that were compliant with the instructions at one year were placed in the Ofu cohort, while those who were non-compliant were placed in the Nfu cohort. survey mailings and telephone interviews were utilized to obtain complete follow-up for the cohort. A χ2 test and an unpaired t test were used for comparison of baseline characteristics. Analysis of covariance was used to compare the mean clinical outcomes after controlling for confounding ***: Complete follow-up data was collected on 554 of the 588 total patients(93%), with 75.5% of patients assigned to the Ofu cohort and 24.5% assigned to the Nfu cohort. We found significant differences between the cohorts with the Ofu group having a higher mean age(P = 0.026) and a greater proportion of females(P = 0.041). No significant differences were found in either the sF12 or WOMAC scores at baseline or at 12 mo ***: Patients who are compliant to routine follow-up visits at one to two years post-operation do not experience better patient reported outcomes than those that are non-compliant. Additionally, after TJA, older women are more likely to be compliant in following surgeon instructions with regard to follow-up office care.

Intrinsic subtypes and bladder cancer metastasis

Recent studies demonstrated that bladder cancers can be grouped into basal and luminal molecular subtypes that possess distinct biological and clinical *** bladder cancers express biomarkers characteristic of cancer stem cells and epithelial-tomesenchymal transition(EMT).Patients with basal cancers tend have more advanced stage and metastatic disease at *** preclinical models basal human orthotopic xenografts are also more metastatic than luminal xenografts are,and they metastasize via an EMT-dependent ***,preclinical and clinical data suggest that basal cancers are also more sensitive to neoadjuvant chemotherapy(NAC),such that most patients with basal cancers who are aggressively managed with NAC have excellent ***,luminal bladder cancers can also progress to become invasive and metastatic,but they appear to do so via mechanisms that are much less dependent on EMT and may involve help from stromal cells,particularly cancer-associated fibroblasts(CAFs).Although patients with luminal cancers do not appear to derive much clinical benefit from NAC,the luminal tumors that are infiltrated with stromal cells appear to be sensitive to anti-PDL1 antibodies and possibly other immune checkpoint ***,neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant immunotherapy may be the most effective approach in treating patients with advanced or metastatic infiltrated luminal bladder cancers.

BACKGROUND Pancreatitis with infected necrosis is a severe complication of acute pancreatitis and carries with it high rates of morbidity and mortality. The management of infected pancreatic necrosis alongside concomitant colorectal cancer has never been described in *** sUMMARY A 77 years old gentleman presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital complaining of ongoing abdominal pain for 8 h. The patient had clinical features of pancreatitis with a raised lipase of 3810 U/L, A computed tomography(CT) abdomen confirmed pancreatitis with extensive peri-pancreatic edema. During the course of his admission, the patient had persistent high fevers and delirium thought secondary to infected necrosis, prompting the commencement of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy with Piperacillin/Tazobactam. subsequent CT abdomen confirmed extensive pancreatic necrosis(over 70%). Patient was managed with supportive therapy,nutritional support and gut rest initially and improved over the course of his admission and was discharged 42 d post admission. He represented 24 d following his discharge with fever and chills and a repeat CT abdomen scan noted gas bubbles within the necrotic pancreatic tissue thereby confirming infected necrotic pancreatitis. This CT scan also revealed asymmetric thickening of the rectal wall suspicious for malignancy. A rectal cancer was confirmed on flexible sigmoidoscopy. The patient underwent two endoscopic necrosectomies and was treated with intravenous antibiotics and was discharged after 28 *** 1 wk post discharge, the patient commenced a course of neoadjuvant radiotherapy and subsequently underwent concomitant chemotherapy prior to undergoing a successful Hartmann's procedure for treatment of his colorectal *** This case highlights the efficacy of endoscopic necrosectomy, early enteral feeding and targeted antibiotic therapy for timely management of infected necrotic pancreatitis.
