Assessing nest attentiveness of Common Terns via video cameras and temperature loggers

Background:While nest attentiveness plays a critical role in the reproductive success of avian species,nest attentiveness data with high temporal resolution is not available for many ***,improvements in both video monitoring and temperature logging devices present an opportunity to increase our understanding of this aspect of avian ***:To investigate nest attentiveness behaviors and evaluate these technologies,we monitored 13 nests across two Common Tern(Sterna hirundo)breeding colonies with a paired video camera-temperature logger approach,while monitoring 63 additional nests with temperature loggers *** occurred from May to August of 2017 on Poplar(Chesapeake Bay,Maryland,USA)and Skimmer Islands(Isle of Wight Bay,Maryland,USA).We examined data respective to four times of day:Morning(civil dawn‒11:59),Peak(12:00‒16:00),Cooling(16:01‒civil dusk),and Night(civil dusk‒civil dawn).Results:While successful nests had mostly short duration off-bouts and maintained consistent nest attentiveness throughout the day,failed nests had dramatic reductions in nest attentiveness during the Cooling and Night periods(pfrom a Great Horned Owl(Bubo virginianus).Incubation appeared to ameliorate ambient temperatures during Night,as nests were significantly warmer during Night when birds were on versus off the nest(pff-bouts during the Peak period occurred during higher ambient temperatures,perhaps due to adults leaving the nest during the hottest periods to perform belly ***,temperature logger data alone had limited ability to predict nest attentiveness status during shorter bouts,with results highly dependent on time of day and bout *** our methods did not affect hatching success(p>0.05),video-monitored nests did have significantly lower clutch sizes(pf iButtons and video ca

Hydroxychloroquine in SARS-CoV-2 infection:Understanding the misadventure

The widespread outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 was declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization and various governments *** prompted the implementation of stringent infection control measures to curb the spread of the *** this,the medical community faced the challenge of treating the virus without specific therapies or a vaccine,leading to reliance on empirical treatment *** this context,hydroxychloroquine,an antimalarial and antirheumatic drug,gained attention as a potential treatment *** its theoretical benefits,such as inhibiting viral entry,reducing inflammation,and modulating immune responses,empirical studies yielded inconsistent *** indicated a potential for symptom relief,while others showed no significant improvement in patient *** initial enthusiasm waned as the lack of substantial evidence led to revoking its Emergency Use Authorization,and several clinical trials were prematurely *** review in question critically examines the factors contributing to the ineffectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in treating SARS-CoV-2 infection,highlighting the complexities of drug repurposing during a rapidly evolving pandemic.

Role of climatic variability in shaping intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in Mediterranean water beetles

The climatic variability hypothesis(CVH)predicts that organisms in more thermally variable environments have wider thermal breadths and higher thermal plasticity than those from more stable ***,due to evolutionary trade-offs,taxa with greater absolute thermal limits may have little plasticity of such limits(trade-off hypothesis).The CVH assumes that climatic variability is the ultimate driver of thermal tolerance variation across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients,but average temperature also varies along such *** explored intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance in three typical Mediterranean saline water beetles(families Hydrophilidae and Dytiscidae).for each species,we compared two populations where the species coexist,with similar annual mean temperature but contrasting thermal variability(continental *** population).We estimated thermal limits of adults from each population,previously acclimated at 17,20,or 25℃.We found species-specific patterns but overall,our results agree with the CVH regarding thermal ranges,which were wider in the continental(more variable)*** the two hydrophilid species,this came at the cost of losing plasticity of the upper thermal limit in this population,supporting the trade-off hypothesis,but not in the dytiscid *** results support the role of local adaptation to thermal variability and trade-offs between basal tolerance and physiological plasticity in shaping thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms,but also suggest that intraspecific variation of thermal tolerance does not fit a general pattern among aquatic *** such intraspecific variation could lead to inaccurate predictions of the vulnerability of aquatic insects to global warming.

Degradation Rate Assessment of Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys

Biodegradable magnesium alloys have been widely used in medical implants. But safety concerns were put forward for the high degradation rate of biodegradable magnesium alloy. The optimal biodegradable magnesium alloys that give rise to the desired degradation rate hasn’t yet to be defined. Assessing the degradation rate of biodegradable magnesium alloys involves in vitro testing, in vivo testing, numerical modeling, understanding the factors influencing their degradation in physiological environments, biocompatibility testing, and clinical studies. It is important to standardize analytical tools aimed at assessing the degradation rate of biodegradable magnesium alloys. It is advisable to identify the threshold for safe degradation rate of biodegradable magnesium alloys in biomedical applications.

In this work(1),Ratti et *** to identify a subgroup of patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma(PHC)for whom the benefit of surgery could be compromised by morbidity,mortality and the risk of early tumor *** for this study come from a multi-institutional database that includes consecutive patients undergoing elective surgery for PHC in 27 Western centers(with experience of more than 15 major liver resections per year)starting in January *** from 2,271 patients were analyzed *** there is neither international consensus on preoperative management nor standardization of surgical technique,the indications for resection were validated at a local multidisciplinary consultation *** optimization was standardized with endoscopic or percutaneous biliary drainage to treat jaundice and the performance of portal embolization was proposed in the event of insufficient volume of the future remaining liver.

Progressive meristem and single-cell transcriptomes reveal the regulatory mechanisms underlying maize inflorescence development and sex differentiation

Maize develops separate ear and tassel inflorescences with initially similar morphology but ultimately different architecture and *** detailed regulatory mechanisms underlying these changes still remain largely *** this study,through analyzing the time-course meristem transcriptomes and floret single-cell transcriptomes of ear and tassel,we revealed the regulatory dynamics and pathways underlying inflorescence development and sex *** identified 16 diverse gene clusters with differential spatiotemporal expression patterns and revealed biased regulation of redox,programmed cell death,and hormone signals during meristem differentiation between ear and ***,based on their dynamic expression patterns,we revealed the roles of two RNA-binding proteins in regulating inflorescence meristem activity and axillary meristem ***,using the transcriptional profiles of 53910 single cells,we uncovered the cellular heterogeneity between ear and tassel *** found that multiple signals associatedwith either enhancedcell death or reduced growth are responsiblefortassel pistil suppression,while part of the gibberellic acid signal may act non-cell-autonomously to regulate ear stamen arrest during sex *** further showed that the pistil-protection gene SILKLESS 1(SK1)functions antagonistically to the known pistil-suppression genes through regulating common molecular pathways,and constructed a regulatory network for pistil-fate ***,our study provides a deep understanding of the regulatory mechanisms underlying inflorescence development and sex differentiation in maize,laying the foundation for identifying new regulators and pathways for maize hybrid breeding and improvement.

Ultra-high-aspect-ratio structures through silicon using infrared laser pulses focused with axicon-lens doublets

We describe how a direct combination of an axicon and a lens can represent a simple and efficient beam-shaping solution for laser material processing *** produce high-angle pseudo-Bessel micro-beams at 1550 nm,which would be difficult to produce by other *** with appropriate stretching of femtosecond pulses,we access optimized conditions inside semiconductors allowing us to develop high-aspect-ratio refractive-index writing *** ultrafast microscopy techniques,we characterize the delivered local intensities and the triggered ionization dynamics inside silicon with 200-fs and 50-ps *** similar plasma densities are produced in both cases,we show that repeated picosecond irradiation induces permanent modifications spontaneously growing shot-after-shot in the direction of the laser beam from front-surface damage to the back side of irradiated silicon *** conditions for direct microexplosion and microchannel drilling similar to those today demonstrated for dielectrics still remain ***,this work evidences higher energy densities than those previously achieved in semiconductors and a novel percussion writing modality to create structures in silicon with aspect ratios exceeding~700 without any motion of the *** estimated transient change of conductivity and measured ionization fronts at near luminal speed along the observed microplasma channels support the vision of vertical electrical connections optically controllable at GHz repetition *** permanent silicon modifications obtained by percussion writing are light-guiding structures according to a measured positive refractive index change exceeding *** findings open the door to unique monolithic solutions for electrical and optical through-silicon-vias which are key elements for vertical interconnections in 3D chip stacks.

Bactrocera tryoni and Bactrocera neohumeralis are morphologically similar sibling pest fruit fly species that possess different biological attributes,geographic distributions,and host *** need to differentiate between the two species is critical for accurate pest status assessment,management,biosecurity,and maintenance of reference *** morphologically similar,adults may be separated based on subtle characters;however,some characters exhibit intraspecific variability,creating overlap between the two ***,there is currently no single molecular marker or rapid diagnostic assay that can reliably distinguish between *** and ***;therefore,ambiguous samples remain *** we report the first molecular marker that can consistently distinguish between *** and *** diagnostic region consists of two adjacent single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)within the pangolin(pan)gene *** confirmed the genotypes of each species are consistent across their distributional range,then developed a tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system(ARMS)PCR assay for rapid diagnosis of the *** assay utilizes four primers in multiplex,with two outer universal primers,and two internal primers:one designed to target two adjacent SNPs(AA)present in *** and the other targeting adjacent SNPs present in ***(GG).The assay accurately discriminates between the two species,but their SNP genotypes are shared with other nontarget tephritid fruit fly ***,this assay is most suited to adult diagnostics where species confirmation is necessary in determining ambiguous surveillance trap catches;maintaining pure colony lines;and in Sterile Insect Technique management responses.

Impact of an oligosaccharide-based polymer on the metabolic profiles and microbial ecology of weanling pigs experimentally infected with a pathogenic ***

Background Our previous study has reported that supplementation of oligosaccharide-based polymer enhances gut health and disease resistance of pigs infected with enterotoxigenic ***(ETEC)f18 in a manner similar to *** objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of oligosaccharide-based polymer or antibiotic on the host metabolic profiles and colon microbiota of weaned pigs experimentally infected with ETEC *** Multivariate analysis highlighted the differences in the metabolic profiles of serum and colon digesta which were predominantly found between pigs supplemented with oligosaccharide-based polymer and *** relative abundance of metabolic markers of immune responses and nutrient metabolisms,such as amino acids and carbohydrates,were significantly differentiated between the oligosaccharide-based polymer and antibiotic groups(qfold change>2.0).In addition,pigs in antibiotic had a reduced(Pf Lachnospiraceae and Lactobacillaceae,whereas had greater(Pf oligosaccharide-based polymer on the metabolic and microbial profiles of pigs is not fully understood,and further exploration is ***,current research suggest that various mechanisms are involved in the enhanced disease resistance and performance in ETEC-challenged pigs by supplementing this polymer.

Thermal conductivity suppression in uranium-doped thorium dioxide due to phonon-spin interactions

In this work,impact of low level of uranium(U)atom substitution on thermal conductivity of thorium dioxide(ThO_(2))is ***_(2)is an electronic insulator with a wide optical band-gap and no unpaired electrons whose thermal transport is governed by phonons.U-substitution introduces unpaired f-electrons resulting in paramagnetic behavior of UeThO_(2)at room temperature,which significantly suppresses its thermal conductivity.A single crystal of UeThO_(2)with graded composition of U is grown using a hydrothermal synthesis method,and thermal conductivity measurements are performed in re-gions with uniform composition of U at levels of 0%,6%,9%and 16%.Measured thermal conductivity profiles over 77e300 K temperature range are analyzed using an analytical expression for phonon-mediated thermal transport based on Klemens-Callaway *** dependent thermal con-ductivity is found to deviate significantly from the Rayleigh scattering trend expected for a simple substitutional point defect with a small perturbation to mass and interatomic *** the resonant scattering term,observed large suppression of thermal conductivity at low temperatures can be closely ***,the extracted phonon-spin coupling constants imply a nonlinear relation of phonon-spin interaction intensity with respect to U doping *** study reveals how phonon-spin scattering contributed by unpaired f-electrons in U atoms influences thermal transport in the UeThO_(2)system.
