Microelectromechanical system(MeMS)devices,such as accelerometers,are widely used across industries,including the automotive,consumer electronics,and medical *** are efficiently produced at very high volumes using large-scale semiconductor manufacturing ***,these techniques are not viable for the costefficient manufacturing of specialized MeMS devices at low-and medium-scale ***,applications that require custom-designed MeMS devices for markets with low-and medium-scale volumes of below 5000–10,000 components per year are extremely difficult to address *** 3D printing of MeMS devices could enable the efficient realization and production of MeMS devices at these low-and medium-scale ***,current micro-3D printing technologies have limited capabilities for printing functional ***,we demonstrate a functional 3D-printed MeMS accelerometer using 3D printing by two-photon polymerization in combination with the deposition of a strain gauge transducer by metal *** characterized the responsivity,resonance frequency,and stability over time of the MeMS *** results demonstrate that the 3D printing of functional MeMS is a viable approach that could enable the efficient realization of a variety of custom-designed MeMS devices,addressing new application areas that are difficult or impossible to address using conventional MeMS manufacturing.

efficient tuning of the coefficients used by proportional-integral-derivative(PID)controllers enhances their *** highly non-linear systems,optimization algorithms are required to make the PID controllers more responsive to *** production of tert-amyl-methyl-ether(TAMe),an essential additive for gasoline,in reactive distillation columns integrates highly non-linear reaction and separation *** the other hand,TAMe distillation is an azeotrope distillation process,therefore non-linearity of this process is more complex than that of conventional ***-controller tuning methods applying a genetic algorithm(GA)and a particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm are compared using a dynamic simulation that integrates the optimization algorithms with the HYSYS process *** PID controller response trends are analyzed following the introduction of a significant disturbance to the TAMe reactive distillation column(i.e.,a ten percent change in the methanol feed temperature).The PSO PID controller tuning method that minimizes the integral of the absolute error(IAe)as its objective function significantly outperforms the GA tuning *** novel PID-tuning methodology developed has more extensive application potential.

We demonstrate a handheld on-chip biosensing technology that employs plasmonic microarrays coupled with a lens-free computational imaging system towards multiplexed and high-throughput screening of biomolecular interactions for point-of-care applications and resource-limited *** lightweight and field-portable biosensing device,weighing 60 g and 7.5 cm tall,utilizes a compact optoelectronic sensor array to record the diffraction patterns of plasmonic nanostructures under uniform illumination by a single-light emitting diode tuned to the plasmonic mode of the *** a sensitive plasmonic array design that is combined with lens-free computational imaging,we demonstrate label-free and quantitative detection of biomolecules with a protein layer thickness down to 3 *** large-scale plasmonic microarrays,our on-chip imaging platform enables simultaneous detection of protein mono-and bilayers on the same platform over a wide range of biomolecule *** this handheld device,we also employ an iterative phase retrieval-based image reconstruction method,which offers the ability to digitally image a highly multiplexed array of sensors on the same plasmonic chip,making this approach especially suitable for high-throughput diagnostic applications in field settings.

Acoustic interference can impede effective communication that is important for survival and reproduction of animals. In response to acoustic interference, some animals can improve signalling efficacy by altering the structure of their signals. In this study, we played artificial noise to 46 male spring peepers Pseudacris crucifer, on their breeding grounds, and tested whether the noise affected the duration, call rate, and peak frequency of their advertisement calls. We used two experimental noise treatments that masked either the high- or low-frequency components of an average advertisement call; this allowed us to evaluate whether frogs adaptively shift the peak frequency of their calls away from both types of interference. Our playback treatments caused spring peepers to produce shorter calls, and the high-frequency noise treatment caused them to lower the frequency of their calls immediately after the noise ceased. Call rate did not change in response to playback. Consistent with previous studies, ambient temperature was inversely related to call duration and positively related to call rate. We conclude that noise affects the structure of spring peeper advertisement calls, and that spring peepers therefore have a mechanism for altering signal structure in response to noise. Future studies should test if other types of noise, such as biotic or anthropogenic noise, have similar effects on call structure, and if the observed changes to call structure enhance or impair communication in noisy environments [Current Zoology 60 （4）： 438-448, 2014].

The decoding release factor (RF) triggers termination of protein synthesis by functionally mimicking a tRNA to spanthe decoding centre and the peptidyl transferase centre (PTC) of the ribosome. Structurally, it must fit into a site craftedfor a tRNA and surrounded by five other RNAs, namely the adjacent peptidyl tRNA carrying the completed polypeptide,the mRNA and the three rRNAs. This is achieved by extending a structural domain from the body of the protein thatresults in a critical conformational change allowing it to contact the PTC. A structural model of the bacterial terminationcomplex with the accommodated RF shows that it makes close contact with the first, second and third bases of the stopcodon in the mRNA with two separate loops of structure: the anticodon loop and the loop at the tip of helix α5. Theanticodon loop also makes contact with the base following the stop codon that is known to strongly influence termina-tion efficiency. It confirms the close contact of domain 3 of the protein with the key RNA structures of the PTC. ThemRNA signal for termination includes sequences upstream as well as downstream of the stop codon, and this may reflectstructural restrictions for specific combinations of tRNA and RF to be bound onto the ribosome together. An unbiasedSeLeX approach has been investigated as a tool to identify potential rRNA-binding contacts of the bacterial RF in itsdifferent binding conformations within the active centre of the ribosome.

Two hundred and fifty single first-order Arrhenius reactions are simulated to generate S2 pyrograms at three heating rates 25,15,and 5°C·*** activation energy(e)and pre-exponential factor(A)of the reactions simulated follow a long-established trend of those variable values displayed by shales and *** characteristics of the transformation fraction(TF)profiles(product generation window temperatures)of the simulated single reactions are compared to the TF profiles of recorded shale pyrograms generated by multiple reactions with different e-A values lying near the defined e-A *** similarities and differences are observed between the TF profile values of the two *** similarities support the spread of e-A values involved in shale pyrogram best *** differences are most likely explained by the complexity of the multiple kerogen first-order and second-order reactions contributing to the recorded shale pyrograms versus the simplicity and crispness of the single first-order reactions *** results also justify the validity of using the previously described“variable e-A pyrogram-fitting method”of multi-heating-rate shale pyrograms enabling optimizers to choose multiple reactions from an unlimited range of e-A *** contrast,further doubt is cast on the validity of the constant-A pyrogram-fitting method used by the easy%Ro technique,in that a distribution of reactions with a single A value is unlikely to represent the complex variety of kerogen macerals observed in shale *** profiles generated by the variable e-A pyrogram-fitting method lie close to the established e-A trend and are likely to provide more realistic TF generation window temperatures than TF profiles generated by the constant-A pyrogram-fitting method.

Background: Our previous study showed that 3 plant extracts enhanced the immune responses and growth efficiency of weaned pigs infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus(PRRSV), which is one of the most economically important disease in swine industry. However, each plant extract differently effected on growth efficiency and immune responses. Therefore, the objective of this study was conducted to characterize the effects and investigate the potential underlying mechanisms of 3 plant extracts on gene expression of alveolar macrophages in weaned pigs experimentally infected with ***: PRRSV infection altered(P e expression of 1,352 genes in pigs fed the control(CON;755 up, 597 down). Compared with the infected CON, feeding capsicum(CAP), garlic botanical(GAR), or turmeric oleoresin(TUR) altered the expression of 46 genes(24 up, 22 down), 134 genes(59 up, 75 down), or 98 genes(55 up, 43 down) in alveolar macrophages of PRRSV-infected pigs, respectively. PRRSV infection up-regulated(P e expression of genes related to cell apoptosis, immune system process, and response to stimulus, but downregulated(P e expression of genes involved in signaling transduction and innate immune *** with the infected CON, feeding TUR or GAR reduced(P e expression of genes associated with antigen processing and presentation, feeding CAP up-regulated(P e expression of genes involved in antigen processing and presentation. Supplementation of CAP, GAR, or TUR also enhanced(P e expression of several genes related to amino acid metabolism, steroid hormone synthesis, or RNA degradation, ***: The results suggest that 3 plant extracts differently regulated the expression of genes in alveolar macrophages of PRRSV-infected pigs, especially altering genes involved in immunity.
