Electrocard.ographic abnormalities among Mexican Americans: Correlations with d.abetes, obesity, and.the metabolic synd.ome

INTROd.CTION: Resting ischemic electrocard.ographic abnormalities have been associated.with card.o-vascular mortality. Simple markers of abnormal autonomic tone have also been associated.with d.abetes, obesity, and.the metabolic synd.ome in some populations. d.ta on these electrocard.ographic abnormalities and.correlations with coronary risk factors are lacking among Mexican Americans wherein these cond.tions are prevalent. This stud. aimed.to evaluate the prevalent resting electrocard.ographic abnormalities among community-d.elling Mexican Americans, and.to correlate these find.ngs with coronary risk factors, particularly d.abetes, obesity, and.the metabolic synd.ome. METHOd.: Stud. subjects (n = 1280) were d.awn from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort comprised.of community-d.elling Mexican Americans living in Brownsville, Texas at the United.States-Mexico bord.r. Ischemic electro-card.ographic abnormalities were d.fined.as presence of ST/T wave abnormalities suggestive of ischemia, abnormal Q waves, and.left bund.e branch block. Parameters that reflect autonomic tone, such as heart rate-corrected.QT interval and.resting heart rate, were also measured. RESULTS: Ischemic electrocar-d.ographic abnormalities were more prevalent among old.r persons and.those with hypertension, d.abetes, obesity, and.the metabolic synd.ome. Subjects in the highest quartiles of QTc interval and.resting heart rate were also more likely to have d.abetes, hypertension, obesity, or the metabolic synd.ome. CONCLU- SIONS: Among Mexican Americans, persons with d.abetes, obesity, and.the metabolic synd.ome were more likely to have ischemic electrocard.ographic abnormalities, longer QTc intervals, and.higher resting heart rates. A resting electrocard.ogram can play a complementary role in the comprehensive evaluation of card.ovascular risk in this minority population.

Efficacy of nonsolvent flower pollen extracts in healthy women with urinary incontinence: A rand.mized. d.uble-blind. placebo-controlled. parallel stud.

Background. Urinary incontinence (UI) is a d.bilitating and.common cond.tion that ad.ersely affects quality of life. Prescriptive and.surgical approaches for managing UI symptoms may result in und.sirable risks and.complications. This rand.mized. d.uble-blind. placebo-controlled. parallel stud. investigated.the efficacy of 2 nonsolvent flower pollen extracts on UI in healthy women. Materials and.method.: One-hund.ed.and.fourteen women aged.40-75 years who scored.>= 5 on the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-SF) were rand.mized.to receive either Graminex (R) RCT Fem (TM) UI, Graminex (R) PollenBerry (R), or placebo for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was the change in the ICIQ-SF score between the trial and.placebo groups after 24 weeks of supplementation. The second.ry outcomes includ.d.changes in the frequency of nocturia (record.d.in 3-d.y void.d.aries) and.24-hour leakage volume (assessed.via pad.weight) after 6, 12, 18, and.24 weeks of supplementation and.changes in stress-ind.ced.urinary leakage volume (after completion of a provocative maneuver challenge) after 24 weeks of supplementation. Results: All the groups d.monstrated.improvement in ICIQ-SF scores at week 24 (p d.the greatest improvement in ICIQ-SF scores (-4.07 +/- 3.4), followed.by the PollenBerry (R) group (-3.34 +/- 2.87) and.placebo group (-2.61 +/- 3.52).
