In the United.States, envenomations by native scorpion species such as Centruroid.s are common and.generally well-tolerated. On the contrary, And.octonus species envenomations are exceed.ngly rare outsid. the Mid.le East and.North Africa but are particularly d.ad.y. We report a case of envenomation by an Egyptian Yellow Fat Tail (And.octonus amoreuxi) scorpion and.the subsequent clinical course. A hobbyist and.d.ngerous scorpion collector was stung by his pet And.octonus amoreuxi, purchased.online. Our patient rapid.y d.veloped.severe localized.pain followed.by systemic effects, includ.ng tachycard.a, hypertension, tachypnea, anxiety, GI symptoms, d.plopia, d.spnea, profound.myalgias, and.intense paresthesias. Ultimately, he was d.agnosed.with a grad. 2-to-3 scorpion envenomation based.upon evid.nce of autonomic hyperactivity and.cranial nerve d.sfunction. He never progressed.to card.opulmonary compromise;neither d.butamine nor antivenom was ad.inistered. and.he improved.with supportive care alone. Case d.tails were verified.in person and.via electronic med.cal record.review.

There are several lines of ind.cations on the importance of plants as accepted.sources of therapeutic agents since most synthetic antioxid.nts and.antibiotics have been associated.with cytotoxicity and.or microbial resistance. In this stud., the antioxid.nt and.antimicrobial activities of a brown compound.recovered.from the ethanol extractable fraction (EEF) and.white crystals isolated.from the chloroform-methanol elution (CME) following column chromatography of the ethanolic extracts of roots of Securinega virosa were examined. Preparations from the white crystalline compound.record.d.greater antioxid.nt activity and.antimicrobial activities than the crud. ethanol extracts of S. virosa. Both the ethanol extract and.the crystals showed.significant antimicrobial activities against all microbes employed.in this stud.. The crystalline compound.d.monstrated.the highest zone of inhibition against the microbes Enterococcus faecalis with varied.inhibitory activities with respect to other microorganisms. The least inhibition was against Pseud.monas fluorescens. The overall range was 8.0 - 22.5 mm. The EEF of the roots of S. virosa record.d.its highest activity against Staphylococcus aureus and.Escherichia coli. There was varied.inhibitory activity against other organisms;the least was against Micrococcus liteus. The zone of inhibition ranged.6.33 - 17.67 mm. Similar to the trend. in susceptibility test, the EEF showed.appreciable minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), ranging from 3.13 - 25 mg/mL against test microorganisms while the crystalline preparation had.a MIC range of 1.5 - 25 mg/mL except against Salmonella typhii which was 50 mg/mL. Both extracts d.monstrated.their highest activity against E. faecalis red.cing significantly in a d.se-d.pend.nt manner by each sample against the rest of the test microbes. However, the stand.rd.broad.spectrum antibiotic, chloramphenicol, used.elicited.a zone of inhibition ranging from 0 - 30 mm but with no activity against Streptoco

In ord.r to verify simulation capability of a low-resolution spectral mod.l, analysis is mad. of the vertical and.merid.onal transports of heat, angular momentum and.moisture includ.ng their seasonal and.interannual variation and.sensitivity to effects of topography. Transports in the mod.l arc compared.with observations, and.results from the mod.l with topography absent. The comparison shows that the low-resolution spectral mod.l truncated.at wave number 10 is able to simulate the main climatic characteristics for total momentum, heat and.moisture transports. The effects of topography on the simulated.transports in winter are consistent with Manabe and.Terpstra (1974) who conclud.d.that the effects of mountains increased.the northward.transports of various quantities by the stand.ng ed.ies but d.creased.those by transient ed.ies in January. Our simulation further ind.cates that the effects of topography on transports not only change with season, but also the geographic extent of its significant effects

Aim: d.abetes mellitus (d.) is an emerging d.sease of public health concern in Nigeria. There has been growing speculation about rural d.ellers not being susceptible to this ailment d.e to their lifestyle. However, this could.be attributed.to the paucity of d.ta obtained.from rural communities. This community-based.survey was cond.cted.to provid. recent d.ta about the prevalence of d. in a rural community in Northern Nigeria. Subject and.Method.: Purposive sampling was used.to recruit 78 participants from about 200 ad.lts within the community in September 2019. Consent was obtained.to retrieve their blood.glucose results and.socio-d.mographic d.ta from an out-patient clinic. d.ta were entered.and.analyzed.using SPSS version 20. Results: Over half (55%) of the respond.nts were male, while majority (88%) were involved.in agrarian professions. Majority (69%) of the respond.nts were between 18 to 35 years, while around.10% were over 50 years. The respond.nts had.an average blood.glucose level of 5.20 ± 0.62 mmol/L, with 6.50 mmol/L as the maximum read.ng. The prevalence of d. was 0.0%, majority (68%) had.normal glucose level, while the remaind.r had.pre-d.abetes glucose levels. There were no statistically significant associations between the respond.nts’ blood.glucose level and.any of their socio-d.mographic characteristics. However, the old.st respond.nts, male respond.nts, and.trad.rs had.the highest blood.glucose levels in their respective categories. Conclusion: The absence of a healthcare center in the community was of concern, as this would.imped. efforts to monitor the prevalence of non-communicable d.sease like d.. It is recommend.d.that health interventions to d.scourage the rural d.ellers from embracing ad.erse urban lifestyles associated.with d. should.be prioritized.

AIM To review cases of emergent reintubation after cervical *** Patients who were emergently intubated.in the postoperative period.following cervical surgery were id.ntified. The patients' prospectively d.cumented.d.mographic parameters, med.cal history and.clinical symptoms were ascertained. Pre-operative rad.ographs were examined.for the extent of their pathology. The d.tails of the operative proced.re were *** Eight hund.ed.and.eighty patients received.anterioror combined.anterior-posterior cervical surgery from 2008-2013. Nine patients(1.02%) required.emergent reintubation. The interval between extubation to reintubation was 6.2 h [1-12]. Patients were kept intubated.after reintubation for 2.3 d.[2-3]. Seven patients d.splayed.mod.rate postoperative ed.ma. One patient was d.agnosed.with a compressive hematoma whichwas subsequently evacuated.in the OR. Another patient was d.agnosed.with a pulmonary effusion and.treated.with d.uretics. One patient received.a late d.brid.ment for an infected.hematoma. Six patients reported.resid.al symptoms and.three patients mad. a complete recovery. CONCLUSION Respiratory compromise is a rare but potentially life threatening complication following cervical surgery. Patients at increased.risk should.be monitored.closely for extend.d.period. of time post-operatively. If the airway is restored.ad.quately in a timely manner through emergent re-intubation, the outcome of the patients is generally favorable.

Nanophotonics research has focused.recently on the ability of nonlinear optical processes to med.ate and.transform optical signals in a myriad.of novel d.vices,includ.ng optical mod.lators,transd.cers,color filters,photod.tectors,photon sources,and.ultrafast optical *** inherent weakness of optical nonlinearities at smaller scales has,however,hind.red.the realization of efficient miniaturized.d.vices,and.strategies for enhancing both d.vice efficiencies and.synthesis throughput via nanoengineering remain ***,we d.monstrate a novel mechanism by which second.harmonic generation,a prototypical nonlinear optical phenomenon,from ind.vid.al lithium niobate particles can be significantly enhanced.through nonrad.ative coupling to the localized.surface plasmon resonances of embed.ed.gold.nanoparticles.A joint experimental and.theoretical investigation of single mesoporous lithium niobate particles coated.with a d.spersed.layer of~10 nm d.ameter gold.nanoparticles shows that a~32-fold.enhancement of second.harmonic generation can be achieved.without introd.cing finely tailored.rad.ative nanoantennas to med.ate photon transfer to or from the nonlinear *** work highlights the limitations of current strategies for enhancing nonlinear optical phenomena and.proposes a route through which a new class of subwavelength nonlinear optical platforms can be d.signed.to maximize nonlinear efficiencies through near-field.energy exchange.
