Vegetable oils are a source of energy, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and fat-soluble vitamins useful for human health care and development. These oils also contribute to organoleptic quality of their products’ derivatives. However, their chemical and physical properties can be modified by the mode of their extraction, storage and distribution. These modifications might negatively affect the nutritional quality of the oils. The goals of this study were to: sample different vegetable oils for cosmetic or dietary use marketed in Cameroon, and verify purity and oxidation states of each kind of oil through determination of its acidity, iodine, peroxide, saponification, refractive indexes and the conformity of the labeling. The carotene content, the level of polar components and specific absorbance were also determined. As the result, six oils namely palm, palm kernel, coconut, black cumin, peanut and shea butter were collected. Apart from labeling, chemicals and physicals parameters analyzed were generally in accordance with the Cameroonian and Codex Alimentarius standard. This study suggests that vegetable oils sampled in the Cameroonian market may not expose consumers to lipid oxidation products generating pathological oxidative stress and inflammation. However, efforts in application of existing standard need to be done as far as labeling are concerned.

Physiological and Growth Responses of C_3 and C_4 Plants to Reduced Temperature When Grown at Low CO_2 of the Last Ice Age

During the last ice age, CO2 concentration （[CO2]） was 180-200 umol/mol compared with the modern value of 380 umol/mol, and global temperatures were -8 ℃ cooler. Relatively little is known about the responses of C3 and C4 species to longterm exposure to glacial conditions. Here Abutilon theophrasti Medik. （C3） and Amaranthus retroflexus L. （C4） were grown at 200 umol/mol CO2 with current （30/24℃） and glacial （22/16℃） temperatures for 22d. Overall, the C4 species exhibited a large growth advantage over the C3 species at low [CO2]. However, this advantage was reduced at low temperature, where the C4 species produced 5x the total mass of the C3 species versus 14x at the high temperature. This difference was due to a reduction in C4 growth at low temperature, since the C3 species exhibited similar growth between temperatures. Physiological differences between temperatures were not detected for either species, although photorespiration/net photosynthesis was reduced in the C3 species grown at low temperature, suggesting evidence of improved carbon balance at this treatment. This system suggests that C4 species had a growth advantage over C3 species during low [CO2] of the last ice age, although concurrent reductions in temperatures may have reduced this advantage.

biometrics-based authentication system offers advantages of providing high reliability and accuracy. However the contemporary authentication system is impuissance to compromise. If a biometrics data is compromised, it cannot be replaced and rendered unusable. In this paper, a cancelable biometrics-based authenticator is proposed to solve this irrevocability issue. The proposed approach is a two-factor authentication system, which requires both of the random data and facial feature in order to access the system. In this system, tokenized pseudo-random data is coupled with momentbased facial feature via inner product algorithm. The output of the product is then discretized to generate a set of private binary code, coined as 2factor-Hashing code, which is acted as verification key. If this biometrics-based verification key is compromised, a new one can be issued by replacing a different set of random number via token replacement. Then, the compromised one is rendered completely useless. This feature offers an extra protection layer against biometrics fabrication since the verification code is replaceable. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system provides zero Equal Error Rate in which there is a clear separation in between the genuine and the imposter distribution populations.

There is widespread interest in estimating and forecasting individual tree and forest growth rates for restoration and carbon sequestration objectives. Outside intensively managed forests, past attempts have been limited by the lack of accurate long-term monitoring in multi-age mixed native forests to provide estimates of both expected mean diameter increments and the statistical variation in those estimates. A dataset from Eucalyptus-dominated native forests in subtropical Queensland, Australia offers an opportunity to provide accurate estimates of tree and forest growth rates. Over 86,400 trees from 155 native species were identified and remeasured between 1936 and 2011 in 641 permanent sample plots across a 500-2000 mm mean annual rainfall gradient. Individual tree diameter at breast height （DbH） increments observed for all species ranged mainly from 0.01 to 0.5 cm yr-1 （94 % of values）, with consistentdifferences between rainfall zones （mean of 500- 2000 mm yr-1）, and varying differences between species （155） and stem diameter class （10-100 cm）. For some spe- cies, diameter increment increased progressively with rain- fall （e.g. Eucalyptus siderophloia, Eucalyptus propinqua, and Lophostemon confertus）, but in others （e.g. Corymbia citriodora subsp, variegata, Corymbia intermedia, and Eucalyptus biturbinata） the greatest diameter increments were recorded between 1200 and 1600 mm yr-1. Where there were sufficient data, most species exhibited a quadratic relationship between DbH increment and DbH class, but two species （ Callitris glaucophylla and Eucalyptus crebra） native to the 500-800 mm annual rainfall zone showed lin- ear increases in DbH increment with increasing DbH. Continued monitoring of these plots would add to their already great value.

Epigenetic factors, including altered microRNA （miRNA） expression, may contribute to aberrant immune cell function in systemic lupus erythematosus （SLE）. MiRNA-let-7a （let-7a） has been shown to directly alter cell cycle progression and proinflammatory cytokine production. Due to the crucial role of let-7a in cell division and inflammation, we investigated let-7a-mediated proliferation and NFKb translocation in J774A. 1 macrophages and MES 13 mesangial cells in vitro. In immune-stimulated cells transfected with let-7a, cell proliferation was significantly increased over time. There was a significant increase in the number of immune-stimulated cells in S and G2 phases. Immune-stimulated cells overexpressing let-7a had increased nuclear translocation of NFKb. bioinformatical analysis revealed that the E2F family, critical regulators of the G1-S transition, has potential binding sites for let-7a in their mRNA transcripts. Let-7a overexpression significantly increased the expression of the cell cycle activator E2F2 and increased retinoblastoma protein （Rb） phosphorylation in immune-stimulated cells. The cell cycle inhibitor E2F5 was significantly decreased in let-7a-transfected cells that were immune-stimulated. bioinformatical analysis revealed E2F2 and NFKb are transcription factors predicted to regulate the let-7a promoter. We analyzed transcriptional regulation of let-7a by real-time RT-PCR using chromatin immunoprecipitation with E2F2 and NFKb antibodies. There was an increase in E2F2 and NFKb binding in DNA enriched for the let-7a promoter in immune-stimulated cells. Silencing E2F2 or NFKb significantly decreased let-7a expression and IL-6 production in immune-stimulated cells. Taken together, our results suggest that overexpression of let-7a may contribute to hyperplasia and the proinflammatory response in SLE.

The alpine treeline ecotone is an important component of mountain ecosystems of the Nepal Himalaya; it plays a vital role in the livelihood of indigenous people,and provides ecosystem services. However,the region faces a problem of paucity of data on treeline characteristics at the regional and landscape scales. Therefore,we used Remote Sensing(RS),and Geographic Information Science(GIS) approaches to investigate cross-scale interactions in the treeline ecotone. Additionally,European Space Agency land cover map,International Center for Integrated Mountain Development(ICIMOD) land cover map,ecological map of Nepal,and United States Geological Survey Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model were used to analyze treeline pattern at the regional scale. Digital Globe high-resolution satellite imagery of barun(eastern Nepal) and Manang(central Nepal) were used to study treeline patterns at the landscape scale. Treeline elevation ranges from 3300-4300 m above sea level. Abies spectabilis,betula utilis,and Pinus wallichiana are the main treeline-forming species in the Nepal Himalaya. There is an east to west treeline elevationgradient at the regional scale. No slope exposure is observed at the regional scale; however,at the landscape scale,slope exposure is present only in a disturbed area(Manang). Topography and human disturbance are the main treeline controlling factor in barun and Manang respectively.
