从小生长在艾奥瓦州乡村的我,在认识“农业”这个词之前,已经明白“为世界产粮食”是艾奥瓦人对自己的一种身份认同。同时,在懂得国界和国家的概念前,我已经知道人都是要吃饭的。这种观念根深蒂固,而艾奥瓦人很是以本地高产而优质的粮食为傲。因此,我进入大学时毫无悬念地选择了农业作为自己的专业,进而沿着这条道路一直走了下来。今天,我依然坚信,以可持续和负责任的方式为全人类提供充足的营养,是全世界农业工作者的崇高事业。令人高兴的是,在工作中,我也结识了不少信念相通的同行。
