Adipose-derived stem cells（ASCs） induce therapeutic angiogenesis due to pro-angiogenic cytokines secretion. Superparamagnetic iron oxide（SPIO） nanoparticles are critical for magnetic resonance（MR） tracking of implanted cells. Hypoxia is a powerful stimulus for angiogenic activity of ASCs. In this study, we investigated whether therapeutic potency could be enhanced by implantation of hypoxia-preconditioned SPIO-labeled ASCs（SPIOASCs） into the infarcted myocardium. ASCs and SPIOASCs were cultured under 2% O_2（hypoxia） or 95% air（normoxia）. Cells were intramyocardially injected into the infarcted myocardium after 48-h culture. We found that hypoxia culture increased the m RNA expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha（HIF-1α） and vascular endothelial growth factor（VEGF） in ASCs and SPIOASCs. The VEGF protein in the conditioned medium was significantly higher in hypoxic ASCs and SPIOASCs than in normoxic ASCs and SPIOASCs. The capillary density and left ventricular contractile function in the infarcted myocardium were significantly higher 4 weeks after implantation with hypoxic ASCs and SPIOASCs than with normoxic ASCs and SPIOASCs. Improvement in the capillary density and left ventricle function didn＇t differ between hypoxic ASCs-transplanted rats and hypoxic SPIOASCs-transplanted rats. Hypoxic culture enhanced the angiogenic efficiency of ASCs. It was concluded that implantation of hypoxic ASCs or SPIOASCs promotes therapeutic angiogenesis and cardiac function recovery in the infarcted myocardium. SPIO labeling does not impact the beneficial effect of hypoxic ASCs.

Robust nonlinear control strategy to maximize energy capture in a variable speed wind turbine with an internal induction generator

This paper proposes a control strategy to maximize the wind energy captured in a variable speed wind turbine, with an internal induction generator, at low to medium wind speeds. The proposed strategy controls the tipspeed ratio, via the rotor angular speed, to an optimum point at which the efficiency constant （or power coefficient） is maximum for a particular blade pitch angle and wind speed. This control method allows for aerodynan^c rotor power maximization without exact wind turbine model knowledge. Representative numerical results demonstrate that the wind turbine can be controlled to achieve near maximum energy capture.

A near infrared spectroscopy calibration for the prediction of fresh grass quality on Irish pastures

The aim of this study was to develop near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)calibrations to predict quality parameters,dry matter(DM,g kg1)and crude protein(CP,g kg1 DM),in fresh un-dried *** of these parameters would enable more precise allocation of quality herbage to grazing *** ryegrass samples(n=1615)were collected over the 2017 and 2018 grazing seasons at Teagasc Moorepark to develop a NIRS calibration *** samples were collected for an independent validation dataset(n=197)during the 2019 grazing *** were scanned using a FOSS 6500 spectrometer at 2 nm intervals in the range of 1100~2500 nm and absorption was recorded as log 1/Reflec*** wet chemistry analysis was carried out for both parameters and the resultant data were calibrated against spectral data by means of modified partial least squares regression.A range of mathematical spectral treatments were examined for each calibration,which were ranked in order of standard error of prediction(SEP)and ratio of percent deviation(RPD).Best performing calibrations achieved high predictive precision for DM(R2=0.86 SEP=9.46 g kg1,RPD=2.60)and moderate precision for CP(R2=0.84 SEP=20.38 g kg1 DM,RPD=2.37).These calibrations will aid the optimisation of grassland management and the development of precision agricultural technologies.

Swallowing is an ensemble of voluntary and autonomic processes key to maintaining our body’s homeostatic *** swallowing(dysphagia)can cause dehydration,malnutrition,aspiration pneumonia,weight loss,anxiety,or even mortality—especially in older adults—by airway *** prevent or mitigate these outcomes,it is imperative to regularly assess swallowing ability in those who are at risk of developing dysphagia and those already diagnosed with ***,current diagnostic tools such as endoscopy,manometry,and videofluoroscopy require access to clinical experts to interpret the *** results are often sampled from a limited examination timeframe of swallowing activity in a controlled ***,there is some risk of periprocedural complications associated with these *** contrast,the field of epidermal sensors is finding non-invasive and minimally obtrusive ways to examine swallowing function and *** this review,we summarize the current state of wearable devices that are aimed at monitoring swallowing function and detecting its *** pay particular attention to the materials and design parameters that enable their *** examine a compilation of both proof-of-concept studies(which focus mainly on the engineering of the device)and studies whose aims are biomedical(which may involve larger cohorts of subjects,including patients).Furthermore,we briefly discuss the methods of signal acquisition and device assessment in relevant wearable ***,we examine the need to increase adherence and engagement of patients with such devices and discuss enhancements to the design of such epidermal sensors that may encourage greater enthusiasm for athome and long-term monitoring.

Affective responses to supervised 10-week programs of resistance exercise in older adults

Background:Resistance exercise has numerous,well-documented benefits on the health and functional performance of older ***,little information exists on the affective responses to resistance exercise in this *** affective responses can predict continued exercise behavior,examining if and how they differ between resistance exercise intensities and frequencies in older adults may provide important data to improve resistance exercise ***:We monitored the affective responses of older adults when performing high-velocity,low-load(HVLL)or low-velocity,high-load(LVHL)resistance exercise once or twice weekly.A total of 40 moderately to highly active,but resistance-exercise naïve,older adults(60-79 years)completed 1 of 4 randomly assigned progressive resistance exercise conditions:HVLL once weekly(HVLL1:n=10),HVLL twice weekly(HVLL2:n=10),LVHL once weekly(LVHL1:n=10),or LVHL twice weekly(LVHL2:n=10).The Physical Activity Affect Scale,Felt Arousal Scale,Feeling Scale,rating of perceived exertion,Visual Analog Scale,and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale were used to assess enjoyment and affective ***:The results from Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale(out of 35)suggest that all exercise conditions were largely and similarly enjoyable to older adults(HVLL1:30.9±2.4;LVHL1:31.9±3.6;HVLL2:30.9±3.5;LVHL2:30.2±3.7)despite greater fatigue(p=0.033;ηp^2p=0.22)and perceived workload(p=0.042;ηp^2=0.20)in LVHL(results from Visual Analog Scale).Conclusion:Moderately to highly physically active older adults may tolerate higher intensities of resistance exercise performed once or twice weekly without experiencing a negative impact on ***,the role that supervision and social interaction played in shaping the participants’responses is unclear.

We report the fabrication and characterization of silicon carbide microdisks on top of silicon pillars suited for applications from near-to mid-infrared. We probe 10 μm diameter disks with different under-etching depths,from 4 μm down to 1.4 μm, fabricated by isotropic plasma etching and extract quality factors up to 8400 at telecom wavelength. Our geometry is suited to present high Q single-mode operation. We experimentally demonstrate high-order whispering-gallery mode suppression while preserving the fundamental gallery mode and investigate some requirements for nonlinear optics applications on this platform, specifically in terms of quality factor and dispersion for Kerr frequency comb generation.

Cosmetic outcome of femtosecond laserassisted pterygium surgery

Background:To examine the cosmetic outcome of femtosecond laser-assisted pterygium surgery(FLAPS)with conjunctival autograft(CAG)and its potential predictive ***:This was a prospective interventional case series(NCT02866968).We included 29 patients(29 eyes)with primary pterygium who underwent *** outcome was graded by two graders(an ophthalmology resident and an experienced ophthalmologist)using Hirst classification system(1-4=excellent-poor).Weighted Cohen’s kappa analysis was performed to examine the intra-and inter-rater *** relationship between cosmetic outcome and various factors were determined by Spearman’s correlation coefficients(r).Results:The preoperative severity of pterygium(Tan grading system)was mild/atrophic(7%),moderate/intermediate(62%),and severe/fleshy(31%).An ultrathin CAG(mean thickness of 74.5±9.8μm)was fashioned *** excellent cosmetic outcome of FLAPS(median±IQR)was observed at 3 months(1.0±1.0)and remained similar at 6months(1.0±0.0)and 12months(1.0±0.0)*** final follow-up,27(93%)patients achieved good-to-excellent cosmetic outcome,with 1(3%)patient having a poor outcome due to incomplete pterygium *** kappa analysis of Hirst grading system showed excellent intra-rater(κ=0.86-0.95)and inter-rater reliability(κ=0.84-0.88).There was a weak and borderline significant correlation between good cosmetic outcome and reduced postoperative CAG thickness(r=0.38,P=0.06)but not with age,gender,preoperative pterygium severity,or intraoperative CAG ***:FLAPS can result in an excellent cosmetic outcome,which may be attributed to the beneficial effect of an ultrathin CAG.
