Perturbations caused by windstorms usually lead to the harvesting and clearcutting of fallen trees and wood debris,especially in the areas of managed forest *** shifts in soils due to management practices play a crucial role in the restoration and maintaining of key ecosystem *** paper focuses on topsoil chemical properties in relation to vegetation type(trees,shrubs and herbs)evolving at windstorm damaged(in 2004)areas with former Norway spruce(Picea abies)forests in the Tatra ***(slovakia).We assessed the content of topsoil organic matter fractions(extractives,holocellulose(HC)and lignin(Lig)),carbon in microbial biomass(Cmic),soil organic matter(sOM)and the content of elements N,C,H and *** study plots represent different types of post-windthrow disturbance history/regime:wooden debris extraction(EXT),wooden debris not extracted(NEX),wooden debris extraction followed by wildfire(FiR),affected by the windstorm in 2014 with the subsequent wooden debris extraction(REX)and unaffected(REF).Our results revealed significant differences among sites in the content of dichloromethane extractives(EXT *** and FiR),acetone extractives(NEX ***,FiR and REF),ethanol extractives(FiR ***,NEX and REF),water extractives(FiR ***,NEX)and Cmic(EXT ***,FiR and REF).The topsoil of Vaccinium myrtillus and Picea abies showed a higher ratio of C/N,N/Lig,and Lig/HC compared to Rubus idaeus,Avenella flexuosa,Calamagrostis villosa,and Larix *** content of N,C,H and s varied between topsoil with shrubs(Vaccinium myrtillus,Rubus idaeus)and grasses(Avenella flexuosa,Calamagrostis villosa).A positive correlation between soil organic matter(sOM)and polar extractives(r=0.81)and a negative correlation between sOM and HC(r=-0.83)was *** carbon content in microbial biomass(Cmic)is positively correlated with acid soluble lignin(AsL)(r=0.85).We also identified a strong correlation between Klason lignin(KL)and the Lig/HC ratio(r=0.97).

Relationship between metabolic syndrome and erectile dysfunction

Aim: To determine the relationship between metabolic syndrome (Ms) and erectile dysfunction (ED) and to see which risk factors correlated the best with ED. Methods: seventy-nine cardiology clinic outpatients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and lipid metabolism disorder were recruited. They were categorized as having Ms, hypertension (blood pressure greater than 130/85 mmHg) and dyslipidemia. ED was classified based on international index of Erectile Function scores. Patients were grouped into quartiles based on body mass index (BMi). Chi-square, Pearson's correlation and regression tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: The mean age of the patients was 56.6 years. ED was diagnosed in 59 (74.7 %) of the 79 patients. in the 38 patients with Ms, all had ED. ED was not significantly correlated with cholesterol levels (P > 0.05), but was found often in patients who had both hyperc-holesterolemia and HT (Pineteen(76 %) of the 25 patients who had dyslipidemia had ED. However, ED was not significantly correlated with dyslipidemia (P > 0.05). Tweenty-two of the 23 patients who had BMi greater than 30 had ED, which was significantly more prevalent than that in those who had normal BMi (Ps seen in 38 of 53 smoker patients. Although ED was more prevalent in cigarette smokers, it was not significantly different from non-smokers (P>0.5). Conclusion: ED is present in a high percentage of patients with Ms. Among multiple risk factors for ED, Ms correlates the most highly. The next most important risk group is the patients with hypertension +hypercholestrolemia and obesity (BMi > 30).

Background:intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy(iCP)increases the risk of adverse pregnancy *** study aimed to explore the association between serum syndecan-1 and glypican-3 levels and the adverse perinatal outcome as well as the responses to the treatment of ursodeoxycholic acid(UDCA).Methods:This prospective,case control study included 88 pregnant women(44 women with iCP and 44 healthy controls).The primary end points were the perinatal outcome and the response to UDCA therapy.A logistic regression model was used to identify the independent risk factors of adverse pregnancy outcomes and reduced response to UDCA ***:Women with iCP had significantly higher serum syndecan-1(1.27±0.36 ng/m L vs.0.98±0.50 ng/m L;P=0.003),glypican-3(1.78±0.13 ng/m L vs.1.69±0.16 ng/m L;P=0.004),AsT(128.59±1.44 vs.13.29±1.32 U/L;Ps.8.00±3.67 U/L;Ps compared with the *** increased levels of syndecan-1(OR=4.715,95%Ci:1.554–14.310;P=0.006),glypican-3(OR=8.465,95%Ci:3.372–21.248;P=0.007),ALT(OR=1.382,95%Ci:1.131–1.690;P=0.002),and postprandial bile acid(PBA)(OR=3.392,95%Ci:1.003–12.869;P=0.026)were correlated to *** adverse neonatal outcome was related to increased glypican-3(OR=4.275,95%Ci:2.726–5.635;P=0.039),and PBA(OR=3.026,95%Ci:1.069–13.569;P=0.037).increases of syndecan-1(OR=7.464,95%Ci:2.130–26.153,P=0.017)and glypican-3(OR=6.194,95%Ci:2.951–13.002;P=0.025)were the risk factors of decreased response to UDCA ***:syndecan-1 and glypican-3 might be powerful determinants in predicting adverse perinatal outcome in patients with iCP,and they can be used to predict the response to the UDCA treatment.

Tropical Cyclones and Polar Lows: Velocity, size, and Energy scales, and Relation to the 26℃ Cyclone Origin Criteria

The goal of this paper is to quantitatively formulate some necessary conditions for the development of intense atmospheric vortices. specifically, these criteria are discussed for tropical cyclones （TC） and polar lows （PL） by using bulk formulas for fluxes of momentum, sensible heating, and latent heating between the ocean and the atmosphere. The velocity scale is used in two forms：（1） as expressed through the buoyancy flux b and the Coriolis parameter ic for rotating fluids convection, and （2） as expressed with the cube of velocity times the drag coefficient through the formula for total kinetic energy dissipation in the atmospheric boundary layer. in the quasistationary case the dissipation equals the generation of the energy. in both cases the velocity scale can be expressed through temperature and humidity differences between the ocean and the atmosphere in terms of the reduced gravity, and both forms produce quite comparable velocity scales. Using parameters b and ic, we can form scales of the area and, by adding the mass of a unit air column, a scale of the total kinetic energy as well. These scales nicely explain the much smaller size of a PL, as compared to a TC, and the total kinetic energy of a TC is of the order 1018 - 1019 J. it will be shown that wind of 33 m s^-1 is produced when the total enthalpy fluxes between the ocean and the atmosphere are about 700 W m-2 for a TC and 1700 W m-2 for a PL, in association with the much larger role of the latent heat in the first case and the stricter geostrophic constraints and larger static stability in the second case. This replaces the mystical role of 26℃ as a criterion for TC origin. The buoyancy flux, a product of the reduced gravity and the wind speed, together with the atmospheric static stability, determines the rate of the penetrating convection. it is known from the observations that the formation time for a PL reaching an altitude of 5-6 km can be only a few hours, and a day, or even half a day, for

Near-Earth Asteroids as the Parents of the δ-Cancrid Meteoroid stream

The δ-Cancrid meteoroid stream forms four active meteor showers which are observable on the Earth annually during January–February and August–september. The stream's definite parent comet has not been established. We performed a search for near-Earth asteroids(NEAs) associated with this stream. We have followed the backward evolution of the orbital elements of a sample of NEAs and found their orbits at the Earth-crossing positions. Using these orbits, we calculated the theoretical parameters of meteor showers associated with the considered NEAs. We carried out our search for observable active showers that match theoretically predicted ones with published data,and the result turned out that the predicted meteor showers of 13 NEAs were identified with the active showers produced by the δ-Cancrid meteoroid stream. The comet-like orbits of NEAs and established association with active meteor showers indicate their common cometary origin. The NEAs considered are moving within the stream and likely represent the dormant remnants of a parent comet of the δ-Cancrid asteroid-meteoroid complex that disintegrated more than 12 thousand years ago.

sufficient conditions are investigated for the global stability of the solu tions to models based on nonlinear impulsive differential equations with ＂supremum＂ and variable impulsive perturbations. The main tools are the Lyapunov functions and Razu mikhin technique. Two illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Organic carbon content and carbon isotope variations across the Permo-Triassic boundary in the gartnerkofel-1borehole, Carnic Alps, Austria

The gartnerkofel borehole is one of the most thoroughly studied and described Permo-Triassic sections in the world. Detailed bulk organic carbon isotope studies show a negative base shift from-24% to-28% in the Latest Permian which latter value persists into the Earliest Triassic after which it decreases slightly to-26%. Two strongly negative peaks of [-38% in the Latest Permian and a lesser peak of-31% in the Early Triassic are too negative to be due to a greater proportion of more negative organic matter and must be due to very negative methane effects. The overall change to more negative values across the Bulla/Tesero boundary fits the relative rise in sea level for this transition based on the facies changes. A positive shift in organic carbon isotope values at the Late Permian Event Horizon may be due to an increase in land-derived organic detritus at this level—a feature shown by allTethyan Permo-Triassic boundary sections though these other sections do not have the same values. Carbonate carbon isotope trends are similar in all sections dropping by2–3 units across the Permo-Triassic boundary. gartnerkofel carbonate oxygen values are surprisingly, considering the ubiquitous dolomitization, compatible with values elsewhere and indicate reasonable tropical temperatures of 60 °C in the Latest Permian sabkhas to 20–40 °C in the overlying marine transition beds. increased landderived input at the Late Permian Event Horizon may be due to offshore transport by tsunamis whose deposits have been recognized in india at this level.
