Floristic composition and edaphic relationships in ferruginous campo rupestre reference ecosystems

Land use change and occupation have led to modifications in the environment causing loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services throughout the *** environments with high economic relevance,such as the ferruginous campo rupestre(rupestrian grassland known as Canga in Brazil),are even more susceptible to severe impacts due to their extreme habitat conditions and low *** determination of reference ecosystems based on the intrinsic characteristics of the ecosystem is essential for conservation as well as to the implementation of ecological *** proposed the reference ecosystem of the three main types of habitats of the ferruginous campo rupestre based on their floristic *** described the floristic composition of each habitat and evaluated the physicochemical properties of the soils and the relationship between plants and *** three habitats showed high diversity of plant species and many endemic species,such as Chamaecrista choriophylla,Cuphea pseudovaccinium,Lychnophora pinaster,and Vellozia *** distribution of vegetation was strongly related with the edaphic characteristics,with a set of species more adapted to high concentration of base saturation,fine sand,organic carbon,and iron,while another set of species succeeded in more acidic soils with higher s and silt *** provide support for the contention that the ferruginous campo rupestre is a mosaic of different habitats shaped by intrinsic local *** to recognize the floristic composition of each particular habitat can lead to inappropriate restoration,increased habitat homogenization and increased loss of biodiversity and ecosystem *** study also advances the knowledge base for building the reference ecosystem for the different types of ferruginous campo rupestre habitats,as well as a key database for highlighting those species contribute most to community assembly in this diverse and threatened tropical mountain ecosystem.

Ensemble learning framework for landslide susceptibility mapping:Different basic classifier and ensemble strategy

The application of ensemble learning models has been continuously improved in recent landslide susceptibility research,but most studies have no unified ensemble ***,few papers have discussed the applicability of the ensemble learning model in landslide susceptibility mapping at the township *** study aims at defining a robust ensemble framework that can become the benchmark method for future research dealing with the comparison of different ensemble *** this purpose,the present work focuses on three different basic classifiers:decision tree(DT),support vector machine(sVM),and multi-layer perceptron neural network model(MLPNN)and two homogeneous ensemble models such as random forest(RF)and extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost).The hierarchical construction of deep ensemble relied on two leading ensemble technologies(i.e.,homogeneous/heterogeneous model ensemble and bagging,boosting,stacking ensemble strategy)to provide a more accurate and effective spatial probability of landslide *** selected study area is Dazhou town,located in the Jurassic red-strata area in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area of China,which is a strategic economic area currently characterized by widespread landslide *** on a long-term field investigation,the inventory counting thirty-three slow-moving landslide polygons was *** results show that the ensemble models do not necessarily perform better;for instance,the Bagging based DT-sVM-MLPNNXGBoost model performed worse than the single XGBoost *** the eleven tested models,the stacking based RF-XGBoost model,which is a homogeneous model based on bagging,boosting,and stacking ensemble,showed the highest capability of predicting the landslide-affected ***,the factor behaviors of DT,sVM,MLPNN,RF and XGBoost models reflected the characteristics of slow-moving landslides in the Three Gorges reservoir area,wherein unfavorable lithological conditions and intense human engineering activitie

Chemical substances present in discharge water generated by laundry industry:Analytical monitoring

To our knowledge,precise data concerning the pollution in terms of qualitative and quantitative fluctuations in discharge water from the laundry sector have seldom been *** study investigated the chemical composition of the discharge water from a laundry *** 160 chemical substances and 15 standard water parameters were *** results showed that the discharge water presented both inorganic and organic polycontamination with a high degree of qualitative and quantitative ***,of all monitored substances,only five metals(Al,Cu,Fe,sr,and Zn),five minerals(P,Ca,K,Na,and s),and alkylphenols were systematically present and *** a daily average water flow of 129 m^(3),the released metal flux was 356 g/***,such as trichloromethane,brominated diphenyl ether(BDE)47,and fluorides,were occasionally found and *** substances,such as chlorophenols,organo-tins,and pesticides were never *** the samples had quantifiable levels in the chemical oxygen demand(COD),biological oxygen demand(BOD),and *** the concentrations of Zn(8.3 g/d),Cu(21.4 g/d),and BOD(57.4 g/d)were close to or above the regulatory values:74.0 g/d for Zn,9.0 g/d for Cu,and 57.0 kg/d for *** data obtained from this study are useful to the choice of additional treatments for the reduction of pollutant fluxes.

A Novel Biopsy Capsule Robot Based on High-speed Cutting Tissue

The capsule robot(CR)is a promising endoscopic method in gastrointestinal diagnosis because of its low discomfort to *** CRs are used to acquire image information only and lack the ability to collect *** some biopsy capsule robots(BCRs)have been developed,it remains challenging to acquire the intestinal tissue while avoiding tearing and adhesion due to the flexibility of colonic *** this study,we develop a BCR with a novel sampling strategy in which soft tissue is scratched with sharp blades rotating at high speed to avoid tissue *** the BCR design,a spiral spring with prestored energy is used to release high energy within a short period of time,which is dificult for a motor or magnet to perform within a small capacity installation *** energy of the tightened spiral spring is transmitted to drive sharp blades to rotate quickly via a designed gear *** guarantee reliable sampling,a Bowden cable is used to transmit the user's manipulation to trigger the rotation of the blades,and the triggering force transmitted by the able can be monitored in real time by a force sensor installed at the manipulating end.A prototype of the proposed BCR is designed and fabricated,and its performance is tested through in vitro *** results show that the proposed BCR is effective and the size of its acquired samples satisfies dinical requirements.

High non-photochemical quenching of VPZ transgenic potato plants limits CO_(2) assimilation under high light conditions and reduces tuber yield under fluctuating light

Under natural conditions,photosynthesis has to be adjusted to fluctuating light *** exposed to high light dissipate excess light energy in form of heat at photosystem II(PsII)by a process called non-photochemical quenching(NPQ).Upon fast transition from light to shade,plants lose light energy by a relatively slow relaxation from *** overexpression of violaxanthin de-epoxidase(VDE),PsII subunit s(Psbs)and zeaxanthin epoxidase(ZEP)in tobacco accelerates relaxation from photoprotection,and increases photosynthetic *** Arabidopsis,expression of the same three genes(VPZ)resulted in a more rapid photoprotection but growth of the transgenic plants was *** we report on VPZ expressing potato plants grown under various light *** to tobacco and Arabidopsis,induction and relaxation of NPQ was accelerated under all growth conditions tested,but did not cause an overall increased photosynthetic rate or growth of transgenic *** yield of VPZ expressing plants was unaltered as compared to control plants under constant light conditions and even decreased under fluctuating light *** control conditions,levels of the phytohormone abscisic acid(ABA)were found to be elevated,indicating an increased violaxanthin availability in VPZ ***,the increased basal ABA levels did not improve drought tolerance of VPZ transgenic potato plants under greenhouse *** failure to benefit from improved photoprotection is most likely caused by a reduced radiation use efficiency under high light conditions resulting from a too strong NPQ *** this negative effect in the future might help to improve photosynthetic performance in VPZ expressing potato plants.

Learning the optimal state-feedback via supervised imitation learning

Imitation learning is a control design paradigm that seeks to learn a control policy reproducing demonstrations from expert *** substituting expert demonstrations for optimal behaviours,the same paradigm leads to the design of control policies closely approximating the optimal *** approach requires training a machine learning algorithm(in our case deep neural networks)directly on state-control pairs originating from optimal *** have shown in previous work that,when restricted to low-dimensional state and control spaces,this approach is very successful in several deterministic,non-linear problems in *** this work,we refine our previous studies using as a test case a simple quadcopter model with quadratic and time-optimal objective *** describe in detail the best learning pipeline we have developed,that is able to approximate via deep neural networks the state-feedback map to a very high *** introduce the use of the softplus activation function in the hidden units of neural networks showing that it results in a smoother control profile whilst retaining the benefits of *** show how to evaluate the optimality of the trained state-feedback,and find that already with two layers the objective function reached and its optimal value differ by less than one *** later consider also an additional metric linked to the system asymptotic behaviour-time taken to converge to the policy’s fixed *** respect to these metrics,we show that improvements in the mean absolute error do not necessarily correspond to better policies.

Target selection for a small low-thrust mission to near-Earth asteroids

The preliminary mission design of spacecraft missions to asteroids often involves,in the early phases,the selection of candidate target *** final result of such an analysis is a list of asteroids,ranked with respect to the necessary propellant to be used,that the spacecraft could potentially *** this paper we investigate the sensitivity of the produced asteroids rank to the employed trajectory model in the specific case of a small low-thrust propelled spacecraft beginning its journey from the sun–Earth L2 Lagrangian point and heading to a rendezvous with some near-Earth *** consider five increasingly complex trajectory models:impulsive,Lambert,nuclear electric propulsion,nuclear electric propulsion including the Earth’s gravity,solar electric propulsion including the Earth’s gravity and we study the final correlation between the obtained target *** find that the use of a lowthrust trajectory model is of great importance for target selection,since the use of chemical propulsion surrogates leads to favouring less attractive options 19%of times,a percentage that drops to 8%already using a simple nuclear electric propulsion model that neglects the Earth’s gravity effects and thrust dependence on the solar *** also find that for the study case considered,a small interplanetary Cubesat named M-ARGO,the inclusion of the Earth’s gravity in the considered dynamics does not affect the target selection significantly.
