Nitrogen addition affects plant biomass allocation but not allometric relationships among different organs across the globe

Aims Biomass allocation to different organs is a fundamental plant ecophysiological process to better respond to changing environments;yet,it remains poorly understood how patterns of biomass allocation respond to nitrogen(N)additions across terrestrial ecosystems *** We conducted a meta-analysis using 5474 pairwise observations from 333 articles to assess how N addition affected plant biomass and biomass allocation among different *** also tested the'ratio-based optimal partitioning'***'isometric allocation,hypotheses to explain potential N addition effects on biomass *** Findings We found that(i)N addition significantly increased whole plant biomass and the biomass of different organs,but decreased rootrshoot ratio(RS)and root mass fraction(RMF)while no effects of N addition on leaf mass fraction and stem mass fraction at the global scale;(ii)the effects of N addition on ratio-based biomass allocation were mediated by individual or interactive effects of moderator variables such as experimental conditions,plant functional types,latitudes and rates of N addition and(iii)N addition did not affect allometric relationships among different organs,suggesting that decreases in RS and RMF may result from isometric allocation patterns following increases in whole plant *** alteration of ratio-based biomass allocation between root and shoot by N addition,the unaffected allometric scaling relationships among different organs(including root ***)suggest that plant biomass allocation patterns are more appropriately explained by the isometric allocation hypothesis rather than the optimal partitioning *** findings contribute to better understand N-induced effects on allometric relationships of terrestrial plants,and suggest that these ecophysiological responses should be incorporated into models that aim to predict how terrestrial ecosystems may respond to enhanced N deposition under future global change scenario

Inflammatory events in the corneal stroma may activate keratocytes and trigger their transition towards myofibroblasts,which now produce different extracellular matrix(EcM)proteins thus causing corneal *** haze is a frequent side effect after photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)to correct high ***,a preventive treatment with mitomycin-c can be used to limit the occurrence of this ***,mitomycin-c is a toxic drug,not devoid of side effects,which may occasionally involve the corneal ***,we have searched for a less risky,natural way,to prevent keratocytes *** this purpose,we have used as markers of the phenotype switch the proteins lumican(highly expressed by keratocytes and much less by myofibroblasts)and smooth muscle actin(αSMA)(highly expressed by myofibroblasts and poorly found in keratocytes),beside Fibronectin(Fn),the expression of which is also increased by transforming growth factor-beta(TGFβ)*** of human keratocytes with TGFβwas used to induce the protein *** different possible candidates,we have found that vitamins A and E,hyaluronic and lactobionic acids may prevent,either alone,or much better in association,the shift in the ratio between lumican andαSMA and the increased Fn *** conclusion,it could be speculated that topic treatment of the ocular surface with an association of these four compounds could be able to prevent or at least limit the occurrence of post-PRK corneal haze,with the additional advantage of lubrication,hydration and antioxidant defense exerted by these molecules.

Study of the Action Mode of Wickerhamomyces anomalus against colletotrichum gloeosporioides

colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the causal agent of anthracnose disease in fruits and vegetables, representing a global problem. The use of biocontrol agents has proved effective against fungal diseases in a wide variety of products. In this work, the antifungal activity of Wickerhamomyces anomalus against c. gloeosporioides isolated from contaminated avocados was evaluated. The antagonism and volatile compound inhibition were measured on Petri dishes. In the mixed cultures, the mycelia damage was observed by scanning electron microscope （SEM）. chitinase and glucanase production by the antagonism was quantified by the reducing sugars method, and biofilm formation was evaluated with 1% crystal violet. The yeast W. anomalus could reduce the growth of c. gloeosporioides up to 65% by direct antagonism and 10% by volatile compounds. The antagonist did not allow the conidia germination and mycelia growth in any of the tested formulations. SEM showed mycelial damage caused by W. anomalus. The antagonist showed adhesion to the mycelium by a polysaccharide biofilm. The presence of mycelium stimulated the hydrolytic enzyme production with the maximal activity of 21.4 U/mg for chitinases at 24 h and 10 U/mg for glucanases at 60 h. These results showed that W. anomalus used together different mechanisms to express its antifungal activity against c. gloeosporioides. This study might be the first report for this phytopathogen isolated from avocado fruits, which could represent an opportunity to establish biocontrol of diseases for this agricultural product.

Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome and Inflammatory Markers of Acute Phase

Objective: To determine the association between the acute inflammatory markers and Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome in our patients. Methods: A total of 44 patients were included in this transverse (cross sectional), observational, analytical, and comparative study. Two groups of patients were created. Results: In patients with chronic renal failure, stages 3, 4, or 5 (scale 1 to 5) were identified and divided into two groups: Group I (Patients with concomitant diabetic retinopathy stabilized with photocoagulation) 22 patients. Group II (Patients with progression of retinopathy, after photocoagulation, in the form of intraocular bleeding) 22 patients. The number of patients with chronic renal failure in stage 3 was: Group I;16. In Group II;12 patients (OR: 1.0). Stage 4: Group I;4 patients. Group II: 3 patients (OR: 1.0, cI 95%;0.3843 - 2.021). Stage 5: Group I;2 patients. Group II;7 patients (OR: 1.8148, cI 95%;1.0448 - 3.1523;chi-squared (x2) 2.7450, p = 0.097). t-Test found statistical significance in Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR): p cI 95%;7.8959 - 23.2515);R = 0.56 p = 0.001;and OR = 1.959 (cI 95%;1.193 - 3.217). By non-parametric tests, c-reactive protein with binomial test showed p conclusions: With this study revealed a possible association of inflammatory markers with Diabetic Renal-Retinal Syndrome.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-covV-2)infection is associated with a hyperinflammatory state and lymphocytopenia,a hallmark that appears as both signature and prognosis of disease severity *** cytokine storm and a sustained inflammatory state are commonly associated with immune cell depletion,it is still unclear whether direct SARS-cov-2 infection of immune cells could also play a role in this scenario by harboring viral *** found that monocytes,as well as both B and T lymphocytes,were susceptible to SARS-cov-2 infection in vitro,accumulating double-stranded RNA consistent with viral RNA replication and ultimately leading to expressive T cell *** addition,flow cytometry and immunofluorescence analysis revealed that SARS-cov-2 was frequently detected in monocytes and B lymphocytes from coronavirus disease 2019(coVID-19)*** rates of SARS-cov-2-infected monocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from coVID-19 patients increased over time from symptom onset,with SARS-coV-2-positive monocytes,B cells,and cD4+T lymphocytes also detected in postmortem lung *** results indicated that SARS-coV-2 infection of blood-circulating leukocytes in covID-19 patients might have important implications for disease pathogenesis and progression,immune dysfunction,and virus spread within the host.

TNF-α inhibitors and tocilizumab do not influence hepatic steatosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

AIM: To investigate the influence, if any, of tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α inihibitors and Tocilizumab, on hepatic steatosis(HS) in rheumatoid arthritis(RA) patients in the light of the known role of TNF-α and interleukin-6, which are key-cytokines in the pathogenesis of RA, in inducing HS in general ***: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts of 36 RA patients, out of whom 12 had been treated with Methotrexate(MTX), 12 with TNF inhibitors ± MTX and 12 with Tocilizumab ± MTX. The 3 subgroups of patients matched each other for sex, age, body mass index, metabolic syndrome(MS) and other risk factors for atherosclerosis. At baseline and after 12 mo each patient underwent an abdominal ultrasonog-raphy for the assessment of presence of HS and the evaluation of its ***: No difference was detected either in the prevalence of HS or in that of its distinct grades between the 3 groups of patients at baseline. After 12 mo, the HS grade unchanged in 20 patients(7 subjects treated with MTX, 7 with TNF-α inhibitors ± MTX and 6 Tocilizumab ± MTX); increased in 12 patients(4 subjects treated with MTX, 4 TNF-α blockers ± MTX and 4 Tocilizumab ± MTX); decreased in 4(1 treated with MTX, 1 with anti-TNF-α + MTX and 2 with TcZ ± MTX(P = 0.75). No correlation was found between getting remission or low disease activity and the course of either MS or ***: We failed to detect any influence of MTX ± TNF-α inhibitors or Tocilizumab in reducing MS and HS. A prospective study is needed to clarify the topic.

Locally Advanced colon cancer with Abdominal Wall Abscess: A challenging case Treated by an Innovative Approach

colon cancer rarely combines with abscess of the abdominal wall. We here describe a case treated by extensive surgery, biological mesh abdominal wall repair and negative pressure therapy. A 58-year-old woman presented with a locally advanced right colon cancer with abdominal wall abscess and no evidence of distant metastasis. Extended right hemicolectomy was performed with en-bloc excision of the bladder dome, the right annex and full thickness removal of the anterior abdominal wall including the abscess. Abdominal wall repair was perfomed by a biological mesh (PermacolTMBiologic Implant) and to facilitate healing the patient was then treated with Vacuum-Assisted closure (V.A.c.?) Therapy. Histology showed a mucinous moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma without nodal metastases (n = 57). Surgical margins including the abdominal wall was tumor free. The postoperative clinical course was uneventful. VA.c.? Therapy treatment reported excellent results in terms of active promotion of the granulation tissue, this allowing for a subsequent placement of a skin graft. Patient is alive and disease-free one year after surgery. The present case shows some peculiar characteristics such as the size of the initial lesion, the abdominal wall abscess and the use of innovative devices such as biological mesh and V.A.c.? Therapy. We demonstrate that extensive surgery for locally advanced colon cancer, in high-volume centers, provides favorable results in terms of survival and quality of life.

AIM: To summarize the current knowledge about the potential relationship between hepatitis c virus(HcV) infection and the risk of several extra-liver cancers. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the literature, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis(PRISMA) Statement. We extracted the pertinent articles, published in MEDLINE and the cochrane Library, using the following search terms: neoplasm/cancer/malignancy/tumor/carcinoma/adeno-carcinoma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, kidney/renal-, cholangio-, pancreatic-, thyroid-, breast-,oral-, skin-, prostate-, lung-, colon-, stomach-, haematologic. case series, case-series with control-group, case-control, cohort-studies as well as meta-analyses, written in English were collected. Some of the main characteristics of retrieved trials, which were designed to investigate the prevalence of HcV infection in each type of the above-mentioned human malignancies were summarised. A main table was defined and included a short description in the text for each of these tumours, whether at least five studies about a specific neoplasm, meeting inclusion criteria, were available in literature. According to these criteria, we created the following sections and the corresponding tables and we indicated the number of included or excluded articles, as well as of meta-analyses and reviews:(1) HcV and haematopoietic malignancies;(2) HcV and cholangiocarcinoma;(3) HcV and pancreatic cancer;(4) HcV and breast cancer;(5) HcV and kidney cancer;(6) HcV and skin or oral cancer; and(7) HcV and thyroid cancer. RESULTS: According to available data, a clear correlation between regions of HcV prevalence and risk of extra-liver cancers has emerged only for a very small group of types and histological subtypes of malignancies. First isolation and identification of H1N1 swine influenza viruses in colombian pig farms

The pig industry in colombia has grown 30% in the last decade achieving high levels of technology and efficiency;in spite of that, respiratory diseases remain a constraint. Since 1970, serological evidence and histological findings suggested the role of swine influenza virus (SIV) as part of the porcine respiratory disease complex;nevertheless, elusive and molecular typing isolates are missing. This study was aimed at isolating SIV from intensive pig farms and to achieve molecular characterization to determine strains circulating in the field. In order to accomplish this goal, 242 samples were taken from nasal swabs, 25 from bronchial washes and 8 from lung tissue. Samples were collected during a period of three years, between 2008 and 2010 and were originated from 78 farms of the three main pig production regions of the country. The samples were transported in BHI broth with 2% antibiotic and antimycotic solution and stored at –70?c until processed. The swabs were inoculated in 9 - 11 days old embryo chicken eggs and in MDcK (Madin Darby canine Kidney) cell cultures with the addition of trypsin. The isolates were identified by the HA (hemoagglutination) test and by RT-PcR targeting the HA (hemagglutinin), NA (Neuraminidase) and M (Matrix) genes. Full length sequence of the HA and NA glycoproteins from four selected virus isolates was conducted (Macrogen?. USA). As a result, fifteen SIV isolates from nine farms distributed in the three regions were obtained. Twelve of the isolates are related to the swine origin H1N1 virus that caused the 2009 influenza pandemic. The remaining three viruses were related to classical swine influenza viruses.
