Precocity in tilapia implies the use of several methods of obtaining monosex seed;the most common tends to use masculinizing hormone 17α-methyltestosterone(17αMT),with variable *** the objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of the sexual reversion process using 17αMT,in a recirculation system and in *** a totally randomized design,three tanks for recirculation(T-RAS)and three tanks for biofloc(T-BIO)with a capacity of 200 L effective volume were taken and filled with 1,056 larvae of Oreochromis sp.,without reversing and with an initial weight of 0.02 g and an initial total length of 1.4 *** study was carried out during 65 d,the fish were fed(10%biomass,adjusted every 15 d)by a commercial diet at 45%of crude protein that included 17αMT(60 mg/kg).Water quality,microbiology,zootechnical and gonadal analysis were *** the water quality results showed that just dissolved oxygen(DO),temperature(T-°c)and alkalinity did not show significant ***,in the productive parameters there were significant differences in the final length,the gain in length and in K which were better in *** microbiological ones did not present significant differences between the ***,the percentage of reversion was significantly better in ***,this study suggests that settleable solids concentrations above 35 cm decrease the efficiency of the sexual reversion for this species.

Accuracy of a predictive model for severe hepatic fibrosis or cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis c

AIM: To assess the accuracy of a model in diagnosing severe fibrosis/cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis c virus (HcV)***: The model, based on the sequential combination of the Bonacini score (BS: ALT/AST ratio,platelet count and INR) and ultrasonography liver surface characteristics, was applied to 176 patients with chronic HcV infection. Assuming a pre-test probability of 35%,the model defined four levels of post-test probability of severe fibrosis/cirrhosis: c), 75-90% (high) and >90% (almost absolute).The predicted probabilities were compared with the observed patients' distribution according to the histology (METAVIR).RESULTS: Severe fibrosis/cirrhosis was found in 67 patients (38%). The model discriminated patients in three comparable groups: 34% with a very high (>90%)or low (certain diagnosis (I.e., a probability ranging from 10%to 74%). The observed frequency of severe fibrosis/cirrhosis was within the predefined ***: The model can correctly identify67% of patients with a high (>75%) or low (cirrhosis, leaving only 33% of the patients still requiring liver biopsy.

This paper aims to present and discuss the use of a power flow methodology based on Gauss elimination method to evaluate the performance of distribution network taking into account the neutral conductor absence at specific sections, and a development of a methodology based on GA （genetic algorithm） capable of evaluating alternative solutions in different bars of the feeder, in order to propose appropriate solutions to improve the distribution network safety. Besides the technical aspects, the proposed GA methodology takes into account the economic feasibility analysis. The results of power flow simulations have shown that the presence of single-phase transformers along with the absence of the neutral conductor at specific sections of the MV （medium voltage） network may increase the Vng （neutral-to-ground voltage） levels of the feeders involved, jeopardizing the system＇s safety. On the other hand, the solutions proposed by the GA methodology may reduce the network Vng levels and improve the safety conditions, providing values close to the ones found before the neutral conductor theft.

AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of John cunningham virus(Jc virus) in a small cohort of patients with colon cancer and to assess its presence in hepatic ***: Nineteen consecutive patients with histologically diagnosed colon cancer were included in our study, together with ten subjects affected by histologically and serologically diagnosed hepatitis c virus infection. In the patients included in the colon cancer group, Jc virus was searched for in the surgical specimen; in the control group, Jc virus was searched for in the hepatic biopsy. The difference in the prevalence of Jc virus in the hepatic biopsy between the two groups was assessed through the χ2 ***: Four out of 19 patients with colon cancer had a positive polymerase chain reaction(PcR) test for Jc virus, and four had liver metastasis. Among the patients with liver metastasis, three out of four had a positive PcR test for Jc virus in the surgical specimen and in the liver biopsy; the only patient with liver metastasis with a negative test for Jc virus also presented a negative test for Jc virus in the surgical specimen. In the control group of patients with hepatitis c infection, none of the ten patients presented Jc virus infection in the hepatic biopsy. The difference between the two groups regarding Jc virus infection was statistically significant(χ2 = 9.55, P = 0.002).cONcLUSION: Jc virus may play a broader role than previously thought, and may be mechanistically involved in the late stages of these tumors.

At present, Brazil imports approximately 11 billion liters/year of diesel. With the interruption of the works in the new Petrobras refineries, the projection is that by 2025 this volume will increase to 24.2 billion liters of diesel/year. In this sense, the biodiesel factory Grand Valle Bio Energy Ltda., located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, in conjunction with the FAPERJ makes some investments in technology development for the cultivation and use of microalgae as an alternative raw material in the production of biodiesel. Based on arguments previously said, this work presents the results of the microalgae cultivation Monoraphidium sp. in photobioreactors the pilot plant of the company. The installation with an area of 120 m2 is included with 2 open photobioreactors of type falling film (20 m × 1 m), with a cascade of 18mm and capacity of 4000 L. The lineage cultivated is selected from previous ecophysiological studies that are identified as promising for biodiesel production by having a high potential for the production of lipids. This lineage is maintained at collection of the stock of cultures Laboratory of Green Technologies of the School of chemistry/ UFRJ. The cultivation was performed in means ASM-1 (Gorham et al., 1964), initial pH 8.0, with aeration and circulation average of 8 hours a day during 19 days. The culture was started with an inoculum of 1 × 107 cel/ml. The lipid production was determined in two phases of growth: on day 4 (exponential phase) and 15 day (stationary phase). For the determination and quantification of lipid content, two different methods were assessed for a sample of biomass, submitted to the same processes the separation and drying. The results showed the methodology of Bligh & Dyer with modifications as the most efficient in extracting lipids. The total lipid content of the biomass Monoraphidium sp. was 30.58%. The growth rate varied between 0.74 ± 0.01 and 0.68 ± 0.02.

Aims Biomass allocation to different organs is a fundamental plant ecophysiological process to better respond to changing environments;yet,it remains poorly understood how patterns of biomass allocation respond to nitrogen(N)additions across terrestrial ecosystems *** We conducted a meta-analysis using 5474 pairwise observations from 333 articles to assess how N addition affected plant biomass and biomass allocation among different *** also tested the'ratio-based optimal partitioning'***'isometric allocation,hypotheses to explain potential N addition effects on biomass *** Findings We found that(i)N addition significantly increased whole plant biomass and the biomass of different organs,but decreased rootrshoot ratio(RS)and root mass fraction(RMF)while no effects of N addition on leaf mass fraction and stem mass fraction at the global scale;(ii)the effects of N addition on ratio-based biomass allocation were mediated by individual or interactive effects of moderator variables such as experimental conditions,plant functional types,latitudes and rates of N addition and(iii)N addition did not affect allometric relationships among different organs,suggesting that decreases in RS and RMF may result from isometric allocation patterns following increases in whole plant *** alteration of ratio-based biomass allocation between root and shoot by N addition,the unaffected allometric scaling relationships among different organs(including root ***)suggest that plant biomass allocation patterns are more appropriately explained by the isometric allocation hypothesis rather than the optimal partitioning *** findings contribute to better understand N-induced effects on allometric relationships of terrestrial plants,and suggest that these ecophysiological responses should be incorporated into models that aim to predict how terrestrial ecosystems may respond to enhanced N deposition under future global change scenario

Does protracted antiviral therapy impact on HcV-related liver cirrhosis progression?

AIM: To study the outcomes of patients with compensated hepatitis c virus-related cirrhosis. METHODS: Twenty-four grade A5 and 11 grade A6 of child-Pugh classification cirrhotic patients with active virus replication, treated for a mean period of 31.3 ± 5.1 mo with moderate doses of interferon-alpha and ribavirin, were compared to a cohort of 36 patients with similar characteristics, without antiviral treatment. Salivary caffeine concentration, a liver test of microsomal function, was determined at the starting and thrice in course of therapy after a mean period of 11 ± 1.6 mo, meanwhile the resistive index of splenic artery at ultra sound Doppler, an indirect index of portal hypertension, was only measured at the beginning and the end of study. RESULTS: Eight out of the 24 A5- (33.3%) and 5 out of the 11 A6- (45.45%) treated-cirrhotic patients showed a significant improvement in the total overnight salivary caffeine assessment. A reduction up to 20% of the resistive index of splenic artery was obtained in 3 out of the 8 A5- (37.5%) and in 2 out of the 5 A6- (40%) cirrhotic patients with an improved liver function, which showed a clear tendency to decrease at the end of therapy. The hepatitis c virus clearance was achieved in 3 out of the 24 (12.5%) A5- and 1 out of the 11 (0.091%) A6-patients after a median period of 8.5 mo combined therapy. In the cohort of non-treated cirrhotic patients, not only the considered parameters remained unchanged, but 3 patients (8.3%) had a worsening ofthe child-Pugh score (P = 0.001).cONcLUSION: A prolonged antiviral therapy with moderate dosages of interferon-alpha and ribavirin shows a trend to stable liver function or to ameliorate the residual liver function, the entity of portal hypertension and the compensation status at acceptable costs.

Inflammatory events in the corneal stroma may activate keratocytes and trigger their transition towards myofibroblasts,which now produce different extracellular matrix(EcM)proteins thus causing corneal *** haze is a frequent side effect after photorefractive keratectomy(PRK)to correct high ***,a preventive treatment with mitomycin-c can be used to limit the occurrence of this ***,mitomycin-c is a toxic drug,not devoid of side effects,which may occasionally involve the corneal ***,we have searched for a less risky,natural way,to prevent keratocytes *** this purpose,we have used as markers of the phenotype switch the proteins lumican(highly expressed by keratocytes and much less by myofibroblasts)and smooth muscle actin(αSMA)(highly expressed by myofibroblasts and poorly found in keratocytes),beside Fibronectin(Fn),the expression of which is also increased by transforming growth factor-beta(TGFβ)*** of human keratocytes with TGFβwas used to induce the protein *** different possible candidates,we have found that vitamins A and E,hyaluronic and lactobionic acids may prevent,either alone,or much better in association,the shift in the ratio between lumican andαSMA and the increased Fn *** conclusion,it could be speculated that topic treatment of the ocular surface with an association of these four compounds could be able to prevent or at least limit the occurrence of post-PRK corneal haze,with the additional advantage of lubrication,hydration and antioxidant defense exerted by these molecules.

colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the causal agent of anthracnose disease in fruits and vegetables, representing a global problem. The use of biocontrol agents has proved effective against fungal diseases in a wide variety of products. In this work, the antifungal activity of Wickerhamomyces anomalus against c. gloeosporioides isolated from contaminated avocados was evaluated. The antagonism and volatile compound inhibition were measured on Petri dishes. In the mixed cultures, the mycelia damage was observed by scanning electron microscope （SEM）. chitinase and glucanase production by the antagonism was quantified by the reducing sugars method, and biofilm formation was evaluated with 1% crystal violet. The yeast W. anomalus could reduce the growth of c. gloeosporioides up to 65% by direct antagonism and 10% by volatile compounds. The antagonist did not allow the conidia germination and mycelia growth in any of the tested formulations. SEM showed mycelial damage caused by W. anomalus. The antagonist showed adhesion to the mycelium by a polysaccharide biofilm. The presence of mycelium stimulated the hydrolytic enzyme production with the maximal activity of 21.4 U/mg for chitinases at 24 h and 10 U/mg for glucanases at 60 h. These results showed that W. anomalus used together different mechanisms to express its antifungal activity against c. gloeosporioides. This study might be the first report for this phytopathogen isolated from avocado fruits, which could represent an opportunity to establish biocontrol of diseases for this agricultural product.

Risk factors associated with pancreatic fistula after distal pancreatectomy, which technique of pancreatic stump closure is more beneficial?

AIM: To identify risk factors related to pancreatic fistula in patients undergoing distal pancreatectomy (DP) and to determine the effectiveness of using a stapled and a sutured closed of pancreatic stump. METHODS: Sixty-four patients underwent DP during a 10-year period. Information regarding diagnosis, operative details, and perioperative morbidity or mortality was collected. Eight risk factors were examined. RESULTS: Indications for DP included primary pancreatic disease (n = 38, 59%) and non-pancreatic malignancy (n = 26, 41%). Postoperative mortality and morbidity rates were 1.5% and 37% respectively; one patient died due to sepsis and two patients required a reoperation due to postoperative bleeding. Pancreatic fistula was developed in 14 patients (22%); 4 of fistulas were classified as Grade A, 9 as Grade B and only 1 as Grade c. Incidence of pancreatic fistula rate was significantly associated with four risk factors: pathology, use of prophylactic octreotide therapy, concomitant splenectomy, and texture of pancreatic parenchyma. The role that technique (either stapler or suture) of pancreatic stump closure plays in the development of pancreatic leak remains unclear. cONcLUSION: The pancreatic fistula rate after DP is 22%. This is reduced for patients with non-pancreatic malignancy, fibrotic pancreatic tissue, postoperative prophylactic octreotide therapy and concomitant splenectomy.
