Diagnostic accuracy of enhanced liver fibrosis test to assess liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C

BACKGROUND:The prognosis and clinical management of patients with chronic liver diseases are closely related to the severity of liver *** biopsy is considered the gold standard for the staging of liver ***,it is an invasive test sometimes related to *** study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of enhanced liver fibrosis(ELF) test to predict liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis ***:This study included 162 patients with liver disease and 67 healthy *** acid,tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase type 1,and amino-terminal propeptide type III procollagen were measured by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay with the ELF test ADVIA Centaur(Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc.).Fibrosis stage was determined using the Metavir scoring ***:In our study,for the diagnosis of significant fibrosis(Metavir F≥2) a cut-off value >7.72 provides a sensitivity of 93.0% and a specificity of 83.0%.The areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve,sensitivity,specificity,and positive and negative predictive values were 0.94,93.3%,81.0%,93.3%,and 81.0%,respectively(P9.3 provides a sensitivity of 93.0% and a specificity of 86.0%.The areas under the receiver operator characteristic curve,sensitivity,specificity,and positive and negative predictive values were 0.94,79.1%,90.8%,75.6%,and 92.3%,respectively(P<0.001).CONCLUSIONS:The ELF test is a promising non-invasive method for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis *** is effective in the diagnosis of both fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Enhancing the light reactions of photosynthesis:Strategies,controversies,and perspectives

Photosynthesis is central to life on Earth,employing sunlight,water,and carbon dioxide to produce chemical energy and *** is generally accepted that boosting its efficiency offers one promising way to increase crop yields under agronomically realistic *** the components,structure,and regulatory mechanisms of the light reactions of photosynthesis are well understood,concepts for enhancing the process have been suggested and partially *** approaches vary in complexity,from targeting single components to comprehensive redesign of the whole process on the scales from single cells or tissues to whole *** to enhance light utilization per leaf,by decreasing pigmentation,increasing levels of photosynthetic proteins,prolonging the lifespan of the photosynthetic machinery,or massive reconfiguration of the photosynthetic machinery and the incorporation of nanomaterials,are discussed in this review ***,strategies intended to optimize the acclimation of photosynthesis to changes in the environment are presented,including redesigning mechanisms to dissipate excess excitation energy(e.g.,non-photochemical quenching)or reduction power(e.g.,flavodiiron proteins).Moreover,schemes for improving acclimation,inspired by natural or laboratory-induced adaptation,are ***,all these endeavors are still in an early exploratory phase and/or have not resulted in the desired outcome,largely because photosynthesis is embedded within large networks of closely interacting cellular and metabolic processes,which can vary among species and even *** explains why integrated,systems-wide approaches are required to achieve the breakthroughs required for effectively increasing crop yields.

Single-particle resonances in a deformed relativistic potential

The positive-parity single-neutron levels in an axially-deformed relativistic quadrupole Woods-Saxon potential are analyzed. Neutron states are obtained as the solutions of the corresponding single-particle Dirac equation, using the coupled-channels method in the coordinate space. The evolution of the levels close to the continuum threshold and, in particular, the occurrence of singleneutron resonant states as the functions of the axial deformation parameter 0 β 0.5, are examined using the eigenphase representation. Calculations are performed for different values of the radius of the potential (R/r 0 ) 3 , corresponding to a variation of the mass number A.

Microscopic analysis of spherical to γ-soft shape transitions in Zn isotopes

The rapid transition between spherical and γ-soft shapes in Zn isotopes in the mass A 70 region,is analyzed using excitation spectra and collective wave functions obtained by diagonalization of a five-dimensional Hamiltonian for quadrupole vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom,with parameters determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial *** microscopic potential energy surfaces,together with the characteristic collective observables,illustrate a rapid transition from near spherical shape at the N = 40 subshell,to γ-soft deformed shapes for lighter *** calculated spectra display fingerprints of a second-order shape phase transition that can be approximately described by the E(5) analytic solution.

Standardizing and Centralizing Datasets for Efficient Training of Agricultural Deep Learning Models

In recent years,deep learning models have become the standard for agricultural computer *** models are typically fine-tuned to agricultural tasks using model weights that were originally fit to more general,non-agricultural *** lack of agriculture-specific fine-tuning potentially increases training time and resource use,and decreases model performance,leading to an overall decrease in data *** overcome this limitation,we collect a wide range of existing public datasets for 3 distinct tasks,standardize them,and construct standard training and evaluation pipelines,providing us with a set of benchmarks and pretrained *** then conduct a number of experiments using methods that are commonly used in deep learning tasks but unexplored in their domain-specific applications for *** experiments guide us in developing a number of approaches to improve data efficiency when training agricultural deep learning models,without large-scale modifications to existing *** results demonstrate that even slight training modifications,such as using agricultural pretrained model weights,or adopting specific spatial augmentations into data processing pipelines,can considerably boost model performance and result in shorter convergence time,saving training ***,we find that even models trained on low-quality annotations can produce comparable levels of performance to their high-quality equivalents,suggesting that datasets with poor annotations can still be used for training,expanding the pool of currently available *** methods are broadly applicable throughout agricultural deep learning and present high potential for substantial data efficiency improvements.

On the genetic distinctiveness of tailorbirds(Cisticolidae:Orthotomus)from the South-east Asian mainland with the description of a new subspecies

Background: The Cambodian Tailorbird(Orthotomus chaktomuk) was one of the most recent major ornithological discoveries in South-east Asia as it originated from lowland seasonally flooded scrub within the densely inhabited floodplain around the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers(Cambodia). The Cambodian Tailorbird is sister to the Dark-necked Tailorbird(O. atrogularis) with very limited genetics and biometric differentiation. Between 2004 and 2012, evidences of a new population of Ashy Tailorbird(O. ruficeps) in SE Cambodia/Vietnam accumulated but no museum specimens were ever reported. The Ashy Tailorbird currently consists of eight subspecies among which the closest geographical populations, O. r. cineraceus(SE Burma to Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Bangka and Belitung) and O. r. borneoensis(Borneo), are allopatric. Subspecific identification of the Cambodian Ashy Tailorbirds individuals was not possible because of the limited differences in plumage among ***: We inspected the Orthotomus ruficeps specimens housed at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle(Paris) and discovered five specimens of O. ruficeps collected by Louis Rodolphe Germain in ‘Cochinchina'(corresponding to southern Vietnam) during the nineteenth century. We sequenced one mitochondrial locus and gathered biometric data from these specimens and compared them with other Orthotomus ***: The Ashy Tailord population from SE Cambodia and Vietnam is distinct from the two geographically close subspecies O. r. borneoensis(1.7%) and O. r. cineraceus(1.3%). O. chaktomuk is nested within O. atrogularis in the mitochondrial gene tree. Microbial dysbiosis in spouses of ulcerative colitis patients: any clues to disease pathogenesis?

A number of alterations have been found within the gutmicrobial profile of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases when compared with the healthy population; however, it is unclear whether such dysbiosis is the cause or simply the consequence of the disease state. In ulcerative colitis, the environment seems to play a crucial role in disease etiology since monozygotic twins show a concordance rate of only 8%-10%-though it is unclear whether it does so by acting through the microbiome. In this study, the authors investigated the influence of cohabitation on the gut microbial community in healthy partners of ulcerative colitis patients-with the intent of clarifying some of these issues. As expected, ulcerative colitis patients had a significant dysbiosis and alterations in microbial metabolism. Interestingly, these abnormal fecal microbial communities were relatively similar amongst patients and their spouses. Thus, this study shows that the microbial profile might be partially transferred from ulcerative colitis patients to healthy individuals. Whether this finding impacts on disease development or has any implication for the role of the microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease etiology remains to be determined.

Analysis of predictor equations for determining the blast-induced vibration in rock blasting

The paper proposes a new empirical correlation designed to complement the‘‘site laws"currently used to evaluate the attenuation in the rock masses of vibrations induced by rock *** formula contains a deformed exponential known as the K-exponential,which seems to well represent a large number of both natural and artificial phenomena ranging from astrophysics to quantum mechanics,with some extension in the field of economics and *** validation of the formula was performed via the analysis of vibration data covering a number of case studies,which differed in terms of both operation and rock type.A total of 12 experimental cases were analysed and the proposed formulation exhibited a good performance in 11 of *** particular,the proposed law,which was built using blast test data,produced very good approximations of the points representing the vibration measurements and would thus be useful in organising production ***,the developed formula was found to work less well when a correlation obtained for a given site was applied to another presenting similar types of rocks and operations,and thus should not be employed in the absence of measurements from test data.

Parabolic Trough Collector and Central Receiver Coupled with Fresnel Lens:Experimental Tests

Renewable energies have a high impact on power energy production and reduction of environmental pollution worldwide,so high efforts have been made to improve renewable technologies and research about *** paper presents the thermal performance results obtained by simulation and experimental tests of a parabolic trough collector with central receiver coupled to Fresnel lens,under different configurations on the *** simulation method was computational fluid dynamics(CFD)analysis in SolidWorks(R)soft-ware tool,which works with Naiver-Stokes equations to converge on a *** tests were formed with all configurations proposed and three observations for each one,a total of 12 observations were performed in all *** a result,the best thermal performance in simulation was achieved with the Fresnel lens and black pipe collector,with a maximum temperature of 116℃under 1000 W/m^2 radiation,the same system achieved in experimental tests a maximum temperature of 96℃with a radiation of 983 W/m^2.

Learning the optimal state-feedback via supervised imitation learning

Imitation learning is a control design paradigm that seeks to learn a control policy reproducing demonstrations from expert *** substituting expert demonstrations for optimal behaviours,the same paradigm leads to the design of control policies closely approximating the optimal *** approach requires training a machine learning algorithm(in our case deep neural networks)directly on state-control pairs originating from optimal *** have shown in previous work that,when restricted to low-dimensional state and control spaces,this approach is very successful in several deterministic,non-linear problems in *** this work,we refine our previous studies using as a test case a simple quadcopter model with quadratic and time-optimal objective *** describe in detail the best learning pipeline we have developed,that is able to approximate via deep neural networks the state-feedback map to a very high *** introduce the use of the softplus activation function in the hidden units of neural networks showing that it results in a smoother control profile whilst retaining the benefits of *** show how to evaluate the optimality of the trained state-feedback,and find that already with two layers the objective function reached and its optimal value differ by less than one *** later consider also an additional metric linked to the system asymptotic behaviour-time taken to converge to the policy’s fixed *** respect to these metrics,we show that improvements in the mean absolute error do not necessarily correspond to better policies.
