Total hip arthroplasty(THA)is one of the most successful elective operations in orthopedic surgery for improving pain and functional disability in patients with end-stage joint disease.However,dislocation continues to be a troublesome complication after THA,as it is a leading cause of revision and is associated with substantial social,health,and economic costs.It is a relatively rare,usually early occurrence that depends on both the patients’characteristics and the surgical aspects.The most recent and important finding is the special attention to be given preoperatively to spinopelvic mobility,which is closely related to the incidence of dislocation.Consequently,clinical and radiographic assessment of the lumbar spine is mandatory to identify an altered pelvic tilt that could suggest a different positioning of the cup.Lumbar spinal fusion is currently considered a risk factor for dislocation and revision regardless of whether it is performed prior to or after THA.Surgical options for its treatment and prevention include the use of prostheses with large diameter of femoral head size,dual mobility constructs,constrained liners,and modular neck stems.

Over recent years,the nomenclature of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has undergone significant changes.Indeed,in 2020,an expert consensus panel proposed the term“Metabolic(dysfunction)associated fatty liver disease”(MAFLD)to underscore the close association of fatty liver with metabolic abnormalities,thereby highlighting the cardiometabolic risks(such as metabolic syndrome,type 2 diabetes,insulin resistance,and cardiovascular disease)faced by these patients since childhood.More recently,this term has been further replaced with metabolic associated steatotic liver disease.It is worth noting that emerging evidence not only supports a close and independent association of MAFLD with chronic kidney disease in adults but also indicates its interplay with metabolic impairments.However,comparable pediatric data remain limited.Given the progressive and chronic nature of both diseases and their prognostic cardiometabolic implications,this editorial aims to provide a pediatric perspective on the intriguing relationship between MAFLD and renal function in childhood.

Land use change and occupation have led to modifications in the environment causing loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services throughout the planet.Some environments with high economic relevance,such as the ferruginous campo rupestre(rupestrian grassland known as Canga in Brazil),are even more susceptible to severe impacts due to their extreme habitat conditions and low resilience.The determination of reference ecosystems based on the intrinsic characteristics of the ecosystem is essential for conservation as well as to the implementation of ecological restoration.We proposed the reference ecosystem of the three main types of habitats of the ferruginous campo rupestre based on their floristic composition.We described the floristic composition of each habitat and evaluated the physicochemical properties of the soils and the relationship between plants and soils.All three habitats showed high diversity of plant species and many endemic species,such as Chamaecrista choriophylla,Cuphea pseudovaccinium,Lychnophora pinaster,and Vellozia subalata.The distribution of vegetation was strongly related with the edaphic characteristics,with a set of species more adapted to high concentration of base saturation,fine sand,organic carbon,and iron,while another set of species succeeded in more acidic soils with higher S and silt concentration.We provide support for the contention that the ferruginous campo rupestre is a mosaic of different habitats shaped by intrinsic local conditions.Failure to recognize the floristic composition of each particular habitat can lead to inappropriate restoration,increased habitat homogenization and increased loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.This study also advances the knowledge base for building the reference ecosystem for the different types of ferruginous campo rupestre habitats,as well as a key database for highlighting those species contribute most to community assembly in this diverse and threatened tropical mountain ecosystem.

Photosynthesis is central to life on Earth,employing sunlight,water,and carbon dioxide to produce chemical energy and oxygen.It is generally accepted that boosting its efficiency offers one promising way to increase crop yields under agronomically realistic conditions.Since the components,structure,and regulatory mechanisms of the light reactions of photosynthesis are well understood,concepts for enhancing the process have been suggested and partially tested.These approaches vary in complexity,from targeting single components to comprehensive redesign of the whole process on the scales from single cells or tissues to whole canopies.Attempts to enhance light utilization per leaf,by decreasing pigmentation,increasing levels of photosynthetic proteins,prolonging the lifespan of the photosynthetic machinery,or massive reconfiguration of the photosynthetic machinery and the incorporation of nanomaterials,are discussed in this review first.Secondly,strategies intended to optimize the acclimation of photosynthesis to changes in the environment are presented,including redesigning mechanisms to dissipate excess excitation energy(e.g.,non-photochemical quenching)or reduction power(e.g.,flavodiiron proteins).Moreover,schemes for improving acclimation,inspired by natural or laboratory-induced adaptation,are introduced.However,all these endeavors are still in an early exploratory phase and/or have not resulted in the desired outcome,largely because photosynthesis is embedded within large networks of closely interacting cellular and metabolic processes,which can vary among species and even cultivars.This explains why integrated,systems-wide approaches are required to achieve the breakthroughs required for effectively increasing crop yields.

Geophysical evidence of a large occurrence of mud volcanoes associated with gas plumbing system in the Ross Sea(Antarctica)

Seafloor and buried reliefs occur along continental margin of the Ross Sea(Antarctica).These features are several kilometres wide and tens of metres high,exhibiting cone or flat-top dome shapes.Previous studies have proposed a volcanic or glacial origin for these formations,but these hypotheses do not account for all the available evidence.In this study,we use morpho-bathymetric data,intermediate resolution multichannel seismic and high resolution chirp profiles,as well as magnetic lines to investigate these clusters of mounds.By employing targeted processing techniques to enhance the geophysical characterization of the seafloor and buried reliefs,and to understand the underlying geological features,we propose that the reliefs are mud volcanoes.Some of these formations appear to be associated with a plumbing system,as indicated by acoustic anomalies linked to sediment containing gas.These formations are likely fed by clayey source rocks of Miocene age.Additionally,other reliefs might be the result of mud mobilisation caused by gravity instability and fluid overpressure.

Common psychiatric disorders(CPDs)and depression contribute significantly to the global epidemic of type 2 diabetes(T2D).We postulated a possible pathophysiological mechanism that through Bridge-Symptoms present in depression and CPDs,promotes the establishment of emotional eating,activation of the reward system,onset of overweight and obesity and,ultimately the increased risk of developing T2D.The plausibility of the proposed pathophysiological mechanism is supported by the mechanism of action of drugs such as naltrexonebupropion currently approved for the treatment of both obesity/overweight with T2D and as separate active pharmaceutical ingredients in drug addiction,but also from initial evidence that is emerging regarding glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists that appear to be effective in the treatment of drug addiction.We hope that our hypothesis may be useful in interpreting the higher prevalence of CPDs and depression in patients with T2D compared with the general population and may help refine the integrated psychiatric-diabetic therapy approach to improve the treatment and or remission of T2D.

In recent years,deep learning models have become the standard for agricultural computer vision.Such models are typically fine-tuned to agricultural tasks using model weights that were originally fit to more general,non-agricultural datasets.This lack of agriculture-specific fine-tuning potentially increases training time and resource use,and decreases model performance,leading to an overall decrease in data efficiency.To overcome this limitation,we collect a wide range of existing public datasets for 3 distinct tasks,standardize them,and construct standard training and evaluation pipelines,providing us with a set of benchmarks and pretrained models.We then conduct a number of experiments using methods that are commonly used in deep learning tasks but unexplored in their domain-specific applications for agriculture.Our experiments guide us in developing a number of approaches to improve data efficiency when training agricultural deep learning models,without large-scale modifications to existing pipelines.Our results demonstrate that even slight training modifications,such as using agricultural pretrained model weights,or adopting specific spatial augmentations into data processing pipelines,can considerably boost model performance and result in shorter convergence time,saving training resources.Furthermore,we find that even models trained on low-quality annotations can produce comparable levels of performance to their high-quality equivalents,suggesting that datasets with poor annotations can still be used for training,expanding the pool of currently available datasets.Our methods are broadly applicable throughout agricultural deep learning and present high potential for substantial data efficiency improvements.

To our knowledge,precise data concerning the pollution in terms of qualitative and quantitative fluctuations in discharge water from the laundry sector have seldom been reported.This study investigated the chemical composition of the discharge water from a laundry industry.Over 160 chemical substances and 15 standard water parameters were monitored.The results showed that the discharge water presented both inorganic and organic polycontamination with a high degree of qualitative and quantitative variability.However,of all monitored substances,only five metals(Al,Cu,Fe,Sr,and Zn),five minerals(P,Ca,K,Na,and S),and alkylphenols were systematically present and quantifiable.For a daily average water flow of 129 m^(3),the released metal flux was 356 g/d.Substances,such as trichloromethane,brominated diphenyl ether(BDE)47,and fluorides,were occasionally found and quantified.Other substances,such as chlorophenols,organo-tins,and pesticides were never identified.All the samples had quantifiable levels in the chemical oxygen demand(COD),biological oxygen demand(BOD),and hydrocarbons.Only the concentrations of Zn(8.3 g/d),Cu(21.4 g/d),and BOD(57.4 g/d)were close to or above the regulatory values:74.0 g/d for Zn,9.0 g/d for Cu,and 57.0 kg/d for BOD.The data obtained from this study are useful to the choice of additional treatments for the reduction of pollutant fluxes.

COG1 CANENHANCE PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND PLANT GROWTH Recently,Wei et al.(2023)report that overexpression or a gain-offunction mutation of COGWHEEL1(COG1)gene,which encodes a transcription factor belonging to the DNA binding with one finger(Dof)protein family,can increase growth and biomass in Arabidopsis thaliana.Similarly,overexpression of any of its six paralogs,CYCLING DOF FACTORS 1-6,also leads to increased growth and biomass production,implying that these seven Dof proteins have partially redundant functions.Accordingly,several of the seven Dof genes must be knocked out to significantly reduce growth and biomass production;the septuple mutants show severely reduced growth but are still viable.COG1 positively modulates the accumulation of transcripts of several photosynthetic genes and,in turn,the corresponding proteins and binds to the promoters of most LHC genes.Changes in gene expression related to photosynthesis increase the efficiency of photosynthesis.Overexpression of two closely related Brassica rapa COG1 homologs in A.thaliana or Arabidopsis COG1 in Nicotiana benthamiana,could cause an increase in growth and biomass production.These results indicate that the effects of COG1 are not confined to a specific species.
