Floristic composition and edaphic relationships in ferruginous campo rupestre reference ecosystems

Land use change and occupation have led to modifications in the environment causing loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services throughout the *** environments with high economic relevance,such as the ferruginous campo rupestre(rupestrian grassland known as canga in Brazil),are even more susceptible to severe impacts due to their extreme habitat conditions and low *** determination of reference ecosystems based on the intrinsic characteristics of the ecosystem is essential for conservation as well as to the implementation of ecological *** proposed the reference ecosystem of the three main types of habitats of the ferruginous campo rupestre based on their floristic *** described the floristic composition of each habitat and evaluated the physicochemical properties of the soils and the relationship between plants and *** three habitats showed high diversity of plant species and many endemic species,such as chamaecrista choriophylla,cuphea pseudovaccinium,Lychnophora pinaster,and Vellozia *** distribution of vegetation was strongly related with the edaphic characteristics,with a set of species more adapted to high concentration of base saturation,fine sand,organic carbon,and iron,while another set of species succeeded in more acidic soils with higher S and silt *** provide support for the contention that the ferruginous campo rupestre is a mosaic of different habitats shaped by intrinsic local *** to recognize the floristic composition of each particular habitat can lead to inappropriate restoration,increased habitat homogenization and increased loss of biodiversity and ecosystem *** study also advances the knowledge base for building the reference ecosystem for the different types of ferruginous campo rupestre habitats,as well as a key database for highlighting those species contribute most to community assembly in this diverse and threatened tropical mountain ecosystem.

Geophysical evidence of a large occurrence of mud volcanoes associated with gas plumbing system in the Ross Sea(Antarctica)

Seafloor and buried reliefs occur along continental margin of the Ross Sea(Antarctica).These features are several kilometres wide and tens of metres high,exhibiting cone or flat-top dome *** studies have proposed a volcanic or glacial origin for these formations,but these hypotheses do not account for all the available *** this study,we use morpho-bathymetric data,intermediate resolution multichannel seismic and high resolution chirp profiles,as well as magnetic lines to investigate these clusters of *** employing targeted processing techniques to enhance the geophysical characterization of the seafloor and buried reliefs,and to understand the underlying geological features,we propose that the reliefs are mud *** of these formations appear to be associated with a plumbing system,as indicated by acoustic anomalies linked to sediment containing *** formations are likely fed by clayey source rocks of Miocene ***,other reliefs might be the result of mud mobilisation caused by gravity instability and fluid overpressure.

Square wave manoeuvre for apogeotropic variant of horizontal canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in neck restricted patients

Objective:We aimed to describe the clinical features of the apogeotropic variant of horizontal canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(Hc BPPV-AG)in a cluster of patients with restrictive neck movement disorders and a new therapeutic manoeuvre for its ***:In a retrospective review of cases from an ambulatory tertiary referral center,patients with Hc BPPV-AG in combination with neck movement restriction that prevented any classical manual repositioning procedure or who were refractory to canalith repositioning manoeuvres,were treated with a new manoeuvre comprised of sequential square-wave pattern of head and body supine rotations while nystagmus was being monitored,until either an apogeotropic to geotropic conversion or resolution of the nystagmus was ***:Fifteen patients were *** but one[14/15 cases]showed a positive therapeutic response to the repositioning procedure in a single *** two cases,a direct relief of vertigo and elimination of nystagmus was observed without an intermediate geotropic *** in three patients the affected ear was not initially identified,it was ultimately identified and successfully treated by the square wave manoeuvre in all of ***:The square-wave manoeuvre is an alternative for Hc BPPV-AG treatment in either cases with neck restriction,where the affected side is not well identified at the bedside or when other manoeuvres fail to resolve the Hc BPPV-AG.

Yield stress measurements and microstructure of colloidal kaolin powders clusterized and dispersed in different liquids

Rheologicat measurements of four colloidal kaolin powders dispersed in water, paraffinic oil and liquid rubber have been done at solid concentration （9 （VS/VL） in the range 8-33%. In quasi-static conditions the yield stress τ° values were derived. An S-shaped relationship between τ° and （9 exists, that allows to evaluate the percolation threshold θc values. In water θc ranges between 29% and 33%, while it is between 17% and 21% in oil and in liquid rubber. In water the microstructure units, i.e. the primary clusters among kaolin crystallites, are denser and bigger than the ones in the two other liquids. Furthermore, in quasistatic condition, the aqueous microstructure units have less tendency to cling together to form a network that can span all over the liquid phase. The different kaolin dispersions at θ equal to 22% are characterized by yield stress ranging between 7.S Pa and 59 Pa in water, 66-250 Pa in oil and 230-770 Pa in liquid rubber. It has been found that for any kaolin types the log τ°/ θ evaluated near to the percolation threshold is a conservative parameter of the three different liquids. These results are useful to design colloidal dispersions with selected microstructure.

Optimizing an interleaved p-n junction to reduce energy dissipation in silicon slow-light modulators

Reducing power dissipation in electro-optic modulators is a key step for widespread application of silicon photonics to optical *** this work,we design Mach–Zehnder modulators in the silicon-on-insulator platform,which make use of slow light in a waveguide grating and of a reverse-biased p-n junction with interleaved contacts along the waveguide *** optimizing the junction parameters,we discuss the full simulation of the modulator in order to find a proper trade-off among various figures of merit,such as modulation efficiency,insertion loss,cutoff frequency,optical modulation amplitude,and dissipated energy per *** with conventional structures(with lateral p-n junction and/or in rib waveguides without slow light)highlights the importance of combining slow light with the interleaved p-n junction,thanks to the increased overlap between the travelling optical wave and the depletion *** a surprising result,the modulator performance is improved over an optical bandwidth that is much wider than the slow-light bandwidth.

Size contrast of Pt nanoparticles formed on neighboring domains within suspended and supported graphene

The relatively small size of thin （one or few layers） graphene flakes makes it extremely difficult to study the behavior of suspended graphene by characterization techniques other than the electron microscopies. Herein, we exploited the capability of spatially resolved photoemission in combination with high resolution transmission electron microscopy to investigate the interaction of thermally evaporated Pt atoms on suspended and supported graphene. Spectroscopic and microscopic analyses reveal that the nucleation of nanometer- sized Pt particles in these two regions exhibit different trends. While only small nanometer-sized islands are present on the supported graphene, relatively larger clusters of islands were also found on the suspended flakes. The X-ray photoemission c ls core levels acquired after the Pt deposition show an increase in the number of vacancies in the graphene sheets.

Treatment with analgesics after mouse sciatic nerve injury does not alter expression of wound healingassociated genes

Animal models of sciatic nerve injury are commonly used to study neuropathic pain as well as axon regeneration. Administration of post-surgical analgesics is an important consideration for animal welfare, but the actions of the analgesic must not interfere with the scientific goals of the experiment. In this study, we show that treatment with either buprenorphine or acetaminophen following a bilateral sciatic nerve crush surgery does not alter the expression in dorsal root ganglion（DRG） sensory neurons of a panel of genes associated with wound healing. These findings indicate that the post-operative use of buprenorphine or acetaminophen at doses commonly suggested by Institutional Animal care and Use committees does not change the intrinsic gene expression response of DRG neurons to a sciatic nerve crush injury, for many wound healing-associated genes. Therefore, administration of post-operative analgesics may not confound the results of transcriptomic studies employing this injury model.

Micronutrient deficiencies in patients with chronic atrophic autoimmune gastritis: A review

chronic atrophic autoimmune gastritis (cAAG) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease characterized by an immune response, which is directed towards the parietal cells and intrinsic factor of the gastric body and fundus and leads to hypochlorhydria, hypergastrinemia and inadequate production of the intrinsic factor. As a result, the stomach’s secretion of essential substances, such as hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factor, is reduced, leading to digestive impairments. The most common is vitamin B12 deficiency, which results in a megaloblastic anemia and iron malabsorption, leading to iron deficiency anemia. However, in the last years the deficiency of several other vitamins and micronutrients, such as vitamin c, vitamin D, folic acid and calcium, has been increasingly described in patients with cAAG. In addition the occurrence of multiple vitamin deficiencies may lead to severe hematological, neurological and skeletal manifestations in cAAG patients and highlights the importance of an integrated evaluation of these patients. Nevertheless, the nutritional deficiencies in cAAG are largely understudied. We have investigated the frequency and associated features of nutritional deficiencies in cAAG in order to focus on any deficit that may be clinically significant, but relatively easy to correct. This descriptive review updates and summarizes the literature on different nutrient deficiencies in cAAG in order to optimize the treatment and the follow-up of patients affected with cAAG.
