Biogas production was investigated in this study as an alternative to wood as fuel using slurries of cow dung(T1),jatropha fruit exocarp(T2),cattle dung and jatropha fruit exocarp(T3)and cow dung,jatropha fruit exocarp with 10 g of iron filings(T4).The 1000 mL of slurry which included 50 mL of inoculum that compensated for the dead or weak micro-organism was made for each *** the end of five weeks,the volume of biogas collected from the samples T1,T2,T3,and T4 when added up,gave 77,154,145 and 586 mL,*** sample mixture of cow dung,jatropha fruit exocarp,and iron filings(T4),gave the highest yield of biogas production with an average weekly production of 59 mL/kg for four weeks and on the fifth week about six times emission of biogas was *** production rate of the biogas was rapid after the gestation period and the T4 emerged as the most substantial emission of all the samples producing 350 mL/kg on the fifth week.

Photometric Study of Three Short-Period Eclipsing Binaries from the ASAS Catalogue

We present the results of our study of three previously unstudied short-period eclipsing binaries, namely: ASAS 110609 ﹣ 2045.3, ASAS105331 ﹣ 7424.7, and ASAS 130057 + 2120.3. Using the visual (V)-band data obtained from the ASAS catalogue, the orbital and physical parameters of the systems were derived for the first time using the Wilson-Divenney (WD) codes. Our investigation revealed that ASAS 110609 ﹣ 2045.3 is a near-contact binary star of the W Uma type having an angle of inclination of 80° ± 1, a mass ratio of about 0.5, an orbital period of 0.2933 ± 0.0130 days, and an effective temperature in the range of 5800 K - 6200 K, making it a G2V-F7V spectral system. ASAS 105331 ﹣ 7424.7 was established to be an over-contact binary system of the W Uma type, inclined at 86° ± 2 to the line of sight, having a mass ratio of about 0.9, a period of 0.4825 ± 0.0002, and an effective temperature in the range of 5200 K - 5300 K, making it a K2V-K0V spectral system. A third light factor of just 0.1 was established for the system, however, no evidence of starspots or discs was inferred for either component. ASAS 130,057 + 2120.3 is a W Uma binary having a mass ratio of about 0.6 in a state of marginal contact. Its orbital inclination is 55° ± 1;the effective temperature is in the range of 6200 K - 6500 K, making it a F7V-F5V stellar system. The system showed evidence of third light, with a third light factor of 0.6, however, the presence of spots or discs could not be established for either component. The deduced period was 0.8930 ± 0.0014 days. None of the systems showed any evidence of the O’Connell effect on either component.

Microbial transformations of toxic monomethylmercury(MMHg) and dissolved gaseous mercury(DGM) at the lower levels of the marine food web are not well understood, especially in oligotrophic and phosphorus-limited seas. To examine the effects of probable phosphorus limitation(~PP-limitation) on relations between mercury(Hg) fractions and microorganisms, we determined the total mercury(THg), total methylated mercury(MeHg), DGM, and microbiological and chemical parameters in the Central Adriatic Sea. Using statistical analysis, we assessed the potential microbial effects on Hg transformations and bioaccumulation. Only in the absence of ~PP-limitation conditions(^(NO–P)P-limitation) is MeHg significantly related to most chemical and microbial parameters, indicating metabolism-dependent Hg *** heterotrophic activity of low nucleic acid bacteria(abundant in oligotrophic regions)seems responsible for most of Hg methylation under ^(NO–P)P-limitation. Under these conditions,DGM is strongly related to microbial fractions and chlorophyll a, indicating biological DGM production, which is probably not metabolically induced, as most of these relations are also observed underPP-limitation. MMHg biomagnification was observed through an increased bioaccumulation factor from microseston to mesozooplankton. Our results indicate that Hgtransformations and uptake might be enhanced under ^(NO–P)P-limitation conditions, emphasizing their impact on the transfer of Hg to higher trophic levels.

Sickle Cell Anaemia: Errors in Haemoglobin Genotyping: Impact on Parents of Children Attending Two Hospitals in South East Nigeria

Objectives: The study is aimed at determining that errors in assigning genotypes to intending couples do exist;and the impact of these errors on parents. Methods: The study was conducted at the children clinics in Enugu and Abakiliki, south east Nigeria. It is a cross-sectional retrospective study in which a review of the records of all the children attending 2 private clinics in Enugu and Abakaliki of Enugu and Ebonyi states respectively, over a 3-year period was done. Results: A total of 6006 children attended the children clinics over the study period. Twenty three (23) of them had sickle cell anaemia. Out of the 23 cases 10 (43.5%) were males and 13 (56.5%) were females. Male to female ratio was 1:1.3. The commonest features were abdominal and leg pains, involving 20 (87%) and 21 (91.3 %) respectively. Among the 23 parents that had their genotypes repeated, 9 males had different genotypes from what they had during courtship or before marriage. The genotypes of all the females that could recall their genotypes before marriage or during courtship were the same after a repeat test. Conclusions: There exist errors in assigning genotypes to parents which at the end made them have children with sickle cell anemia, unwittingly, with serious consequences bordering on strained relationship between the parents with the children bearing the brunt.

Background: The burden of COVID-19 and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are some of the major and persistent global health challenges of the twenty-first century. HIV and COVID-19 are expected to overlap in high HIV-burden countries, posing several public health challenges as a result. Prisons are overcrowded, have limited space for social distancing and have inadequate ventilation systems, making it difficult to contain the spread of COVID-19 in addition to the high-risk behaviours of inmates which contribute to the spread of HIV within these facilities. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 among inmates in a prison facility with a relatively high HIV burden in Port Harcourt, Nigeria;investigating potential risk factors and co-infection with HIV. Methodology: The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional study design sampling 200 inmates from the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Custodial Centre from July to December 2022. A well-structured questionnaire was administered via interviews in addition to screening for HIV-1/2 antibodies as well as COVID-19 antigens using rapid diagnostic test kits. Descriptive statistics and chi-square were carried out on the GraphPad Prism 9 software with statistical significance defined as a p-value of less than 0.05 at a 95% confidence interval. Result: The prevalence of HIV from the current study was 6.5%, COVID-19 prevalence was reported to be 12.5% while HIV/COVID-19 co-infection was 1.5% The duration of incarceration, face mask use, frequent visitations and vaccination against COVID-19 were found to be significantly associated with the prevalence of COVID-19 in the studied population (p Conclusion: The current study reports a relatively high prevalence of HIV and COVID-19 among the inmates in the study area.
