In conspecific type of aggression the modulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) plays a main role. A decrease of 5-HT in the brain intensifies this type of aggression and in contrast, the increase of 5-HT reduces it. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of different concentrations of sertraline HCl on aggressive behavior of Betta splendens male fish. It was concluded that sertraline added to aquarium water in the dose of 0.4, 4.0 and/or 100.0 μg·L-1 BW during 14 days of exposition increased synaptic levels of 5-HT which in turn resulted in reduction of specific aggressive behavior in the environmental concentrations (0.4 μg) and then times higher. Sertraline caused a periodic, and sometimes even total weakening of the male-male type fight, which was a standard trial applied in ethological research on the Siamese fighting fish. In the current study, the most effective one is proved to be the dose of 4.0 μg·L-1 BW (parallel to earlier investigated fluoxetine in the same dose).

AIM To evaluate the association of IFNL3(IL28B) SNP rs4803217 with severity of disease and treatment outcome in chronic hepatitis C(CHC).METHODS The study enrolled 196 CHC Polish patients(82 women and 114 men in age 20-64) infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV) genotype 1. They were treatment na?ve and qualified to pegylated interferon alpha(PEG-IFN-α) and ribavirin(RBV) therapy. The analyzed baseline parameters included: degree of inflammation, stage of fibrosis, viral load as well as alanine aminotransferase(ALT), asparagine aminotransferase(AST) and total bilirubin(TBIL). The analysis of response to therapy included: sustained virological response(SVR), defined as undetectable serum HCV RNA level six month after completion of 48-wk therapy, and relapse, defined as achieving undetectable viral load at the end of treatment but not SVR. HCV genotyping and HCV RNA quantification were performed using commercially available tests. DNA was isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells or from buccal cell swabs. In addition to rs4803217, also single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs)(rs12979860, rs8099917 and rs12980275) of known significance in predicting of HCV clearance were analyzed. SNPs were determined by high resolution melt analysis and confirmed by sequencing of amplicons. RESULTS Frequency of rs4803217 genotypes in studied group was as follows: 27.55%; 54.59% and 17.86% for CC, CA and AA, respectively. The rs4803217 SNP, similar to other analyzed SNPs, was not associated with severity of CHC(grade of inflammation, stage of fibrosis, baseline viral load as well as biochemical parameters: ALT, AST, TBIL). It was demonstrated that the rs4803217 C allele is associated with SVR(C vs A: P < 0.0001; dose of C allele: P = 0.0002) and nonrelapse(C vs A: P = 0.001; dose of C allele: P = 0.002). The objective of the study was to investigate the presence and the activity of quantum dots nanoparticles in colored *** special interest is devoted to the investigation of their role in the typical treatment of water or wastewater,studying their influence on the effectiveness of applied treatments *** standard chemical processes for water treatment and disinfection （direct UV photolysis and direct ozonation） were applied for the degradation of colored organic pollutant,reactive azo dye,in the presence/absence of CdSe/ZnS core-shells quantum *** obtained results indicated that investigated nanoparticles inhibit the overall efficiency of applied processes,especially in the case of direct UV photolysis,although catalytic effect might be expected in part due to the semiconductor nature of quantum *** results lead to a conclusion that CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles behave as additional pollutants in the *** should be removed from the system prior the treatment,because their presence could decrease the efficiency,i.e.,prolong the time of treatment and correspondingly increase the costs of the treatment process.

AIM: Growth factors (GF) that participate in regeneration and apoptosis have an important role in chronic liver diseases. We analyzed serum GF concentration during antiviral treatment and correlated it with morphological liver failure in chronic hepatitis C. METHODS: The levels of GF were determined in sera by ELISA method in 0,16,32 and 48 wk of therapy in 40 patients treated with IFNα2b (9 MU sc/wk) and RBV (1.2 g/d) and in 25 healthy subjects. Blind liver biopsies were done before treatment with histological grading and staging examination. RESULTS: The hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) were markedly elevated prior the treatment and decreased during the therapy, although they did not reach the normal level. In non-responding (NR) patients, HGF and EGF were higher than that in responders (R), however differences were not significant. Before the treatment thrombopoietin (TPO) level was significantly lower in R than in NR (P<0.03). Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) concentration was lower in chronic hepatitis C than in healthy subjects and decreased during the treatment. A significant positive correlation was observed between inflammatory activity in the liver tissue and the concentration of HGF (in R: r= 0.4, in NR: r= 0.5), TPO (R: r= 0.6), and a significant negative correlation between this activity and EGF (R: r = -0.6) and PDGF (R: r= -0.5). Serum HGF concentration was higher in more advanced fibrosis (R: r = 0.5, P<0.05; NR: r=0.4, P<0,03). CONCLUSION: The decrease in PDGF can be an effective prognostic marker of the treatment and HCV elimination. Decreasing HGF, EGF, and PDGF can influence the inhibition of inflammatory and fibrotic processes in the liver during the antiviral treatment.

The middle Miocene Badenian evaporite basin of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin was a saline lake, separated by a barrier from the sea and supplied with seawater seeping through the barrier or overflowing it occasionally in the form of short-lived marine transgressions. Such transgressions could leave behind marine microfossils in marly clay intercalations. One of them(2.3 m thick) occurs in the uppermost part of the sulphate sequence, in the unit ‘o’, in the Babczyn 2 borehole section. It contains marine palynomorphs(dinoflagellate cysts) and foraminiferal assemblages indicating a marine environment. The low-diversity benthic foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by opportunistic, shallow infaunally living species, preferring muddy or clayey substrate for thriving, brackish to normal marine salinity, and inner shelf environment. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, although taxonomically impoverished, consist of marine species;euryhaline forms that tolerate increased salinity are missing. Relatively common microfossils found in clay intercalations within gypsum have important palaeogeographical implications:they strongly suggest that there existed an additional inflow channel supplying the Polish Carpathian Basin from the south during the evaporite deposition and afterwards.

AIM: To analyze the protein expression essential for apoptosis in liver steatosis. METHODS: The expression of proapoptotic proteins p53, Bax, and antiapoptotic Bcl-2 in hepatocytes with steatosis (SH) and without steatosis (NSH) was evaluated in 84 patients at various stages of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). RESULTS: Immunohistochemical staining of liver tissue showed the activation of p53 protein in SH and NSH with increased liver steatosis, diminished Bcl-2 and slightly decreased Bax protein. Positive correlation was found between the stage of liver steatosis with p53 expression in SH (r = 0.54, P < 0.01) and NSH (r = 0.49, P < 0.01). The antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 was diminished together with the advancement of liver steatosis, especially in non-steatosed hepatocytes (r =0.43, P < 001). CONCLUSION: Apoptosis is one of the most important mechanisms leading to hepatocyte elimination in NAFLD. The intensification of inflammation in NAFLD induces proapoptotic protein p53 with the inhibition of antiapoptotic Bcl-2.

AIM: Mechanisms responsible for persistence of HCV infection and liver damage in chronic hepatitis C are not clear. Apoptosis is an important form of host immune response against viral infections. Anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2 expression on liver tissue as well as the influence of interferon alpha 2b (IFNa2b) and ribavirin (RBV) were analyzed in patients with chronic hepatitis C. METHODS: In 30 patients with chronic hepatitis C (responders - R and non-responders - NR) treated with IFNα2b+RBV, protein bcl-2 was determined in hepatocytes and in liver associated lymphocytes before and after the treatment. RESULTS: The treatment diminished bcl-2 protein accumulation in liver cells in_patients with hepatitis C (P<0.05). Before and after the therapy, we detected bcl-2 protein in R in 87±15% and 83±20% of hepatocytes and in 28±18% and 26±10% of liver-associated lymphocytes, respectively. In NR, the values before treatment decreased from 94±32% to 88±21% of hepatocytes and 39±29% to 28±12% of lymphocytes with bcl-2 expression. There was no statistical correlation between bcl-2 expression on liver tissue with inflammatory activity, fibrosis and biochemical parameters before and after the treatment. CONCLUSION: IFNα2b+RBV treatment, by bcl-2 protein expression decrease, enables apoptosis of hepatocytes and associated liver lymphocytes, which in turn eliminate hepatitis C viruses.

Chromium Content in the Human Hip Joint Tissues

Objective Chromium has many important functions in the human body. For the osseous tissue, its role has not been clearly defined. This study was aimed at determining chromium content in hip joint tissues. Methods A total of 91 hip joint samples were taken in this study, including 66 from females and 25 from males. The sample tissues were separated according to their anatomical parts. The chromium content was determined by the AAS method. The statistical analysis was performed with U Mann-Whitney＇s non-parametric test, P〈0.05. Results The overall chromium content in tissues of the hip joint in the study subjects was as follows： 5.73 μg/g in the articular cartilage, 5.33 μ/g in the cortical bone, 27.86 μ/g in the cancellous bone, 5.95 μg/8 in the fragment of the cancellous bone from the intertrochanteric region, and 2.28 μ/g in the joint capsule. The chromium contents were observed in 2 group patients, it was 7.04 μ/g in people with osteoarthritis and 22.59 μ/g in people with fractures. Conclusion The observed chromium content was highest in the cancellous bone and the lowest in the joint capsule. Chromium content was significantly different between the people with hip joint osteoarthritis and the people with femoral neck fractures.

AIM:To estimate the amount of apoptosis among healthy HBsAg carriers,patients with chronic HBV infection treated wibh lamivudine and patients with chronic HCV infection treated with interferon alpha and *** of apoptosis was evaluated by serum sFas/sFasL concentration measurement. Moreover dependence between apoptosis and HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA levels was studied. METHODS:Eighty-six persons were included into study:34 healthy HBsAg carders,33 patients with chronic HBV infecl^on and 19 patients with chronic HCV *** levels of sFas/sFasL were measured by ELISA ***-DNA and HCV-RNA were measured by RT-PCR *** of sFas/sFasL were determined before and 2 and 12 wk after therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infection. HBV-DNA or HCV-RNA was detected before treatment and 6 mo after treatment. RESULTS:Twenty-four (71%) healthy HBsAg carders showed HBV-DNA over 10~5/mL,which was comparable to the patients with chronic hepatitis *** from HBV-DNA levels, the concentration of sFas among healthy HBsAg carders was comparable to healthy *** patients with chronic hepatitis B and C,the concentration of sFas was significantly higher in comparison to healthy HBsAg carriers and healthy *** chronic hepatitis B patients the concentration of sFas was decreased during lamivudine *** chronic hepatitis C patients the concentration of sFas was increased during IFN alpha and ribavirin treatment,sFasL was not detected in control *** sFasL occurred more frequently in chronic hepatitis C patients in comparison to chronic hepatitis B patients. CONCLUSION:There are no correlations between apoptosis and HBV-DNA *** ther is an association between apoptosis and activity of inflammation in patients with chronic HBV *** can be increased in patients with chronic hepatitis C by effective treatment which may be a result of apoptosis stimulation by IFN-α.
