The discovery of ubiquitous habitable extrasolar planets,combined with revolutionary advances in instrumentation and observational capabilities,has ushered in a renaissance in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence(SETI).Large scale SETI activities are now underway at numerous international *** Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST)is the largest single-aperture radio telescope in the world,and is well positioned to conduct sensitive searches for radio emission indicative of *** is one of the five key science goals specified in the original FAST project plan.A collaboration with the Breakthrough Listen Initiative was initiated in 2016 with a joint statement signed both by *** Yan,the then director of National Astronomical Observatories,chinese Academy of Sciences(NAOc),and *** Worden,chairman of the Breakthrough Prize *** this paper,we highlight some of the unique features of FAST that will allow for novel SETI *** identify and describe three different signal types indicative of a technological source,namely,narrow band,wide-band artificially dispersed and modulated ***,we propose observations with FAST to achieve sensitivities never before *** nearby exoplanets,such as TESS targets,FAST will be sensitive to an EIRP of 1.9×1011 W,well within the reach of current human *** the Andromeda Galaxy,FAST will be able to detect any Kardashev type II or more advanced civilization there.

High-entropy alloy(HEA)-based materials are expected to be promising oxygen electrocatalysts due to their exceptional *** electronic structure regulation of HEAs plays a pivotal role in enhancing their elctrocatalytic ***,PtFecoNiMn nanoparticles(NPs)with subtle lattice distortions are constructed on metal-organic framework-derived nitrogen-doped carbon by an ultra-rapid Joule heating *** to the modulated electronic structure and the inherent cocktail effect of HEAs,the as-synthesized PtFecoNiMn/Nc exhibits superior bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with a positive half-wave potential of 0.863 V *** hydrogen electrode(RHE)for oxygen reduction reaction and a low overpotential of 357 mV at 10 mA·cm^(-2)for oxygen evolution *** assembled quasi-solid-state zinc-air battery using PtFecoNiMn/Nc as air electrode shows a high peak power density of 192.16 mW·cm^(-2),low charge−discharge voltage gap,and excellent durability over 500 cycles at 5 mA·cm^(-2).This work demonstrates an effective route for rational design of bifunctional nanostructured HEA electrocatalysts with favorable electronic structures,and opens up a fascinating directions for energy storage and conversion,and beyond.

Acetabular cup size trends in total hip arthroplasty

BAcKGROUND Total hip arthroplasty(THA)is a common procedure for end stage *** learning curve for THA is complex and *** of the most difficult skills to master is acetabular *** wish to identify if experience in arthroplasty leads to preservation of more bone *** To investigate if increasing surgeon experience will predict an ever decreasing acetabular cup *** A retrospective case series of four attending orthopaedic surgeons was *** uncemented elective total hip arthroplasties since appointment were selected for *** size of acetabular cup used was noted and logistic regression was used to identify if a trend to smaller cups *** A total of 1614 subjects were included with a mean age of 64 *** cups were on average 0.18mm smaller per year(95%confidence interval-0.25 to-0.11,Pcup sizes to decrease 0.27 mm/year for surgeon A,0.02 mm/year for surgeon B,0.15 mm/year for surgeon c and 0.29 mm/year for surgeon *** of the four surgeons had a more pronounced trend to smaller cups for male subjects than their female *** We found increasing surgeon experience to be associated with an ever-decreasing acetabular cup *** acetabular cup size may act as a surrogate marker of surgical proficiency by virtue of decreased acetabular reaming.

Background: Scrotal trauma is a rare injury, and can compromise reproductive function. If in closed trauma, a morphological assessment of the lesion is usually necessary before treatment, in open trauma otherwise, namely in the case of testicular evisceration, surgical exploration is the rule. Objective: To present the management of open scrotal trauma. case Presentation: These were two adults aged 42 and 63, admitted for post-traumatic testicular evisceration. One of the patients presented with signs of infection due to a diagnosis delay. Management consisted on surgical exploration, with scrotal debridement and testicular reintegration. The evolution was favourable. conclusion: Open scrotal trauma is a rare lesion that can cause testicular evisceration. It requires surgical exploration, which should be systematic.

A DIREcT SEARcH FRAME-BASED cONJUGATE GRADIENTS METHOD

A derivative-free frame-based conjugate gradients algorithm is presented. convergence is shown for c^1 functions, and this is verified in numerical trials. The algorithm is tested on a variety of low dimensional problems, some of which are ill-conditioned, and is also tested on problems of high dimension. Numerical results show that the algorithm is effective on both classes of problems. The results are compared with those from a discrete quasiNewton method, showing that the conjugate gradients algorithm is competitive. The algorithm exhibits the conjugate gradients speed-up on problems for which the Hessian at the solution has repeated or clustered eigenvalues. The algorithm is easily parallelizable.
