Direct photolysis of nitroaromatic compounds in aqueous solutions

The direct photolysis of nitrobenzene and nitrophenols in aqueous solutions irradiated by polychromatic light were investigated. Several aromatic intermediates were identified as three nitrophenol isomers, nitrohydroquinone, nitrosobenzene, nitrocatechol, catechol and phenol. Nitrite and nitrate ions were also detected in the irradiated solution indicating direct photolysis of nitrobenzene or nitrophenols. The degradation of nitrobenzene and nitrophenols and the formation of three nitrophenol isomers were observed to follow zero-order kinetics. The quantum yields for nitrobenzene and nitrophenols removal are about 10~ -3 and 10~ -3 —10~ -4 respectively. The mechanism for nitrobenzene degradation was suggested to follow mainly nitro-nitrite intramolecular arrangement.

Nitroaromatic compounds such as nitrobenzene and nitrophenols are largely synthesised and particularly often occur in water bodies as toxic pollutants. The degradation of these compounds in the environment via direct photolysis and by biological treatment is difficult and usually slow. In our two previous published papers, we have discussed the advanced oxidation of nitrobenzene and nitrophenols in aqueous solutions irradiated by direct photolysis using polychromatic light and by means of UV/H2O2 process. The experimental results suggested the UV/H2O2 process is an effective and efficient technology for complete mineralization of these organic compounds. Based on the results therein, comprehensive reaction mechanism for nitrobenzene photolysis was proposed with detailed discussions.

With the ever increasing global obesity pandemic, clinical burden from obesity related complications are anticipated in parallel. Bariatric surgery, a treatment approved for weight loss in morbidly obese patients, has reported to be associated with good outcomes, such as reversal of type two diabetes mellitus and reducing all-cause mortality on a long term basis. However, complications from bariatric surgery have similarly been reported. In particular, with the onslaught of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) epidemic, in associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, there is increasing prevalence of NAFLD related liver cirrhosis, which potentially connotes more risk of specific complications for surgery. Bariatric surgeons may encounter, either expectedly or unexpectedly, patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) and NASH related cirrhosis more frequently. As such, the issues and considerations surrounding their medical care/surgery warrant careful deliberation to ensure the best outcomes. These considerations include severity of cirrhosis, liver synthetic function, portal hypertension and the impact of surgical factors. This review explores these considerations comprehensively and emphasizes the best approach to managing cirrhotic patients in the context of bariatric surgery.

The management of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(IPMN) is presently evolving as a result of the improved understanding of the natural history and biological behavior of the different pancreatic cystic neoplasms; and better preoperative diagnosis of these neoplasms due to advancement in preoperative diagnostic tools. International consensus guidelines for the management of IPMN were first formulated in 2006 and subsequently revised in 2012. Both these guidelines were constructed based on expert opinion and not on robust clinical data. The main limitation of the original Sendai guidelines was that it had a low positive predictive value resulting in many benign neoplasms being resected. Hence,these guidelines were revised in 2012. However,although the updated guidelines resulted in an improvement in the positive predictive value over the Sendai Guidelines,the results of several studies validating these guidelines demonstrated that its positive predictive value remained low. Furthermore,although both guidelines were associated with high negative predictive values,several investigators have demonstrated that some malignant IPMNs may be missed. Finally,it is imperative to emphasize that major considerations when managing a patient with IPMN including the patient's surgical risk,life-expectancy and even cost of investigations are not taken into account in current guidelines. The management of a patient with IPMN should be individualized and tailored according to a patient's risk benefit profile for resection vs surveillance.

This review compares the different types of membrane processes for air *** main categories of membrane-based dehumidification are identified–membrane contactors using porous membranes with concentrated liquid desiccants,separative membranes using dense membrane morphology with a pressure gradient to drive the separation of moisture from air,and adsorptive membranes using nanofibrous membranes which adsorb and capture moisture to realise *** upon the importance of dehumidification and humidity control for urban sustainability and energy efficacy,this review critically analyses and recognizes the three unique categories of membrane-based air dehumidification ***,the discussion is broken into three sections-one for each category-discriminating in terms of the driving force,membrane structure and properties,and its performance *** will notice that despite having the same objective to dehumidify air,the polymers used amongst each category differs to suit the operating requirements and optimize dehumidification *** the end of each section,a performance table or summary of dehumidifying membranes in its class is *** final section concludes with a comparative review of the three categories on membrane-based air dehumidification technologies and draw inspiration from parallel research to rationalise the potential and innovative use of promising materials in membrane fabrication for air dehumidification.

Improving the Performance of DC Microgrids by Utilizing Adaptive Takagi-Sugeno Model Predictive Control
