Thermal Performance Analysis of Plaster Reinforced with Raffia Vinifera Particles for Use as Insulating Materials in Building

The present study focuses on the formulation of new composite consisting of plaster and raffia vinifera particle (RVP) with the purpose to reducing energy consumption. The aim of this study is to test this new compound as an insulating eco-material in building in a tropical climate. The composites samples were developed by mixing plaster with raffia vinifera particles (RVP) using three different sizes (1.6 mm, 2.5 mm and 4 mm). The effects of four different RVP incorporations rates (i.e., 0wt%, 5wt%;10wt%;15wt%) on physical, thermal, mechanicals properties of the composites were investigated. In addition, the use of the raffia vinifera particles and plaster based composite material as building envelopes thermal insulation material is studied by the habitable cell thermal behavior instrumentation. The results indicate that the incorporation of raffia vinifera particle leads to improve the new composite physical, mechanical and thermal properties. And the parametric analysis reveals that the sampling rate and the size of raffia vinifera particles are the most decisive factor to impact these properties, and to decreases in the thermal conductivity which leads to an improvement to the thermal resistance and energy savings. The best improvement of plaster composite was obtained at the raffia vinifera particles size between 2.5 and 4.0 mm loading of 5wt% (C95P5R) with a good ratio of thermo-physical-mechanical properties. Additionally, the habitable cell experimental thermal behavior, with the new raffia vinifera particles and plaster-based composite as thermal insulating material for building walls, gives an average damping of 4°C and 5.8°C in the insulated house interior environment respectively for cold and hot cases compared to the outside environment and the uninsulated house interior environment. The current study highlights that this mixture gives the new composite thermal insulation properties applicable in the eco-construction of habitats in tropical environments

From the lab to the world： The paradigmatic assumption and the functional cognition of avian foraging

Mechanisms of animal learning and memory were traditionally studied without reference to niche-specific functional considerations. More recently, ecological demands have informed such investigations, most notably with respect to foraging in birds. In parallel, behavioural ecologists, primarily concerned with functional optimization, have begun to consider the role of mechanistic factors, including cognition, to explain apparent deviations from optimal predictions. In the present paper we discuss the application of laboratory-based constructs and paradigms of cognition to the real-world challenges faced by avian foragers. We argue that such applications have been handicapped by what we term the ‘paradigmatic assumption’ – the assumption that a given laboratory paradigm maps well enough onto a congruent cognitive mechanism (or cognitive ability) to justify conflation of the two. We present evidence against the paradigmatic assumption and suggest that to achieve a profitable integration between function and mechanism, with respect to animal cognition, a new conceptualization of cognitive mechanisms functional cognition – is required. This new conceptualization should define cognitive mechanisms based on the informational properties of the animal’s environment and the adaptive challenges faced. Cognitive mechanisms must be examined in settings that mimic the important aspects of the natural environment, using customized tasks designed to probe defined aspects of the mechanisms’ operation. We suggest that this approach will facilitate investigations of the functional and evolutionary relevance of cognitive mechanisms, as well as the patterns of divergence, convergence and specialization of cognitive mechanisms within and between species.

The emergence of antiretroviral resistance mutations represents a major threat to the achievement of national and global goals for the elimination of HIV-1 infection. The global strategy in 2019 in Cte d'Ivoire is a new national policy for the management of people living with HIV with the administration of dolutegravir (DTG)-based fixed-dose combination. The aim of our study was to evaluate HIV-1 resistance to antiretrovirals (ARVs) in infected adult subjects in Cte d’Ivoire in the context of a systematic switch to a DTG-based combination. Between February 2022 and October 2023, a cross-sectional survey with random sampling was conducted in 06 services caring for people living with HIV. A total of 139 participants were included in the study. Adults with a viral load ≥ 1000 copies/ml were tested for HIV-1 ARV resistance mutations. Molecular analyses were performed using protocol of ANRS-MIE (National Agency for Research on AIDS and emerging infectious diseases). The interpretation is performed by HIVGRAD (https://***/cms/grade/). The frequencies of HIV-1 resistance to non-nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), integrase inhibitors (IINTs) and protease inhibitors (PIs) were 82%, 73%, 19% and 11% respectively. The main mutations observed in the different classes were K103N (45%), M184V (64%), E157Q (19%) and l10V/M46I/A71V/I54V (6%) respectively. This study reveals the emergence of resistance to DTG-based fixed-dose combinations, favored by high rates of resistance to NRTIs and NNRTIs. This finding underlines the need for enhanced viral load monitoring and HIV-1 genotyping tests to guide the choice of NRTIs for combination therapy. In addition, monitoring for mutations to second-generation NRTIs is essential, given the scale-up of DTG-based regimens currently underway in Cte d’Ivoire.

Muscle energy technique for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:A feasibility study

Objective:This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing a manual therapy technique(muscle energy technique,MET)protocol in a hospital pulmonary rehabilitation(PR)program for patients with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Methods:Participants aged 40 years and over,with moderate to severe COPD,were recruited into this 12-week *** primary outcome measures were feasibility(acceptability of the intervention and attendance/adherence to the trial)and safety(adverse events,AEs).All participants received the MET and PR *** and assessors were ***-standardized MET was delivered on 6 occasions(a maximum of once per week)at the hospital directly before a PR *** undertook PR sessions as per the hospital program at a frequency of two days per week for 8 *** were contacted 4 weeks after their final MET treatment via a telephone call to assess acceptability of the ***:Thirty-three participants were enrolled,with a median age of 74 years(range 45-89 years).The median number of MET sessions that participants attended was 5(range O-6)out of a possible 6 sessions(83%attendance).At follow-up,participants overwhelmingly enjoyed the MET treatment with some subjectively reporting improved *** were no major AEs related to the intervention,with the majority of AEs classified as expected events related to COPD ***:It is feasible to implement a manual therapy protocol using MET as an adjunct to PR in a hospital *** rates were satisfactory and there were no AEs related to the MET component of the intervention.

Computer-animated stimuli to measure motionsensitivity： constraints on signal design in theJacky dragon

Identifying perceptual thresholds is critical for understanding the mechanisms that underlie signalevolution. Using computer-animated stimuli, we examined visual speed sensitivity in the Jackydragon Amphibolurus muricatus, a species that makes extensive use of rapid motor patterns in so-cial communication. First, focal lizards were tested in discrimination trials using random-dot kine-matograms displaying combinations of speed, coherence, and direction. Second, we measuredsubject lizards＇ ability to predict the appearance of a secondary reinforcer （1 of 3 differentcomputer-generated animations of invertebrates： cricket, spider, and mite） based on the directionof movement of a field of drifting dots by following a set of behavioural responses （e.g., orientingresponse, latency to respond） to our virtual stimuli. We found an effect of both speed and coher-ence, as well as an interaction between these 2 factors on the perception of moving ***, our results showed that Jacky dragons have acute sensitivity to high speeds. We then em-ployed an optic flow analysis to match the performance to ecologically relevant motion. Our resultssuggest that the Jacky dragon visual system may have been shaped to detect fast motion. Thispre-existing sensitivity may have constrained the evolution of conspecific displays. In contrast,Jacky dragons may have difficulty in detecting the movement of ambush predators, such as snakesand of some invertebrate prey. Our study also demonstrates the potential of the computer-animated stimuli technique for conducting nonintrusive tests to explore motion range and sensitiv-ity in a visually mediated species.

Background:This study examined real-world treatment and management of bacillus Calmette-Guérin(BCG)-unresponsive patients across 3 continents,including patients unable or unwilling to undergo *** and methods:Physicians actively involved in managing patients with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer completed online case report forms for their 5 consecutive patients from the broad BCG-unresponsive population and a further 5 consecutive BCG-unresponsive patients who did not undergo cystectomy(in Japan,physicians provided a total of 5 patients across both cohorts).Results:Most patients had received 1(37%)or 2(24%)maintenance courses of *** or more maintenance BCG courses were received by patients in Japan(59%)and China(31%),while in Germany 76%of patients received only 1 *** patients became BCG-unresponsive during their first(44%)or second(22%)treatment course;in Germany,77%became BCG-unresponsive during their first treatment *** countries did not provide another course of BCG after a patient first became unresponsive,whereas unresponsive patients in Japan and China were most likely to be retreated with BCG."Untreated-on watch and wait"was the main treatment/management approach received post-BCG treatment for 42%or more of patients in most countries except China(39%)and the United States(36%)."Following treatment guidelines"was consistently the top reason for post-BCG treatment selection across all treatment ***:This study confirmed the global unmet need for patients with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer,and found that many patients experienced periods of no treatment after not responding to BCG therapy.
