Apennine–Pyrenees disjunct distribution: an unusual biogeographic pattern revealed in fea beetles of the Longitarsus candidulus species-group (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae)

European mountain systems have played a crucial role in shaping the distribution of species and of their genetic diversity during the Quaternary climatic changes,with the establishment of allopatric patterns across main mountain *** we investigated the evolutionary history of fea beetles of the Longitarsus candidulus species-group showing an uncommon disjunct biogeographic pattern across the Apennine and the *** applied a multilocus molecular approach and multispecies coalescent models to establish a phylogenetic and systematic framework for this morphologically homogeneous species-group and to estimate the time of main cladogenetic events underlying the origin of the Apennine-Pyrenees *** found strong support for the monophyly of the candidulus group with a sister relationship between Longitarsus laureolae and *** endemic to the Apennine and the Pyrenees mountains *** timing of speciation events in the candidulus species-group coincides with 2 major climatic transitions during the Early and Middle Pleistocene which resulted in signifcant environmental changes in Europe and suggest a scenario of allopatric isolation and divergence on distinct mountain *** split between the thermophilic species *** and the ancestor of the temperate species *** and *** is estimated at~3 Ma during the transition from Pliocene to Pleistocene and was probably triggered by their segregation in xerophilous and temperate *** speciation between *** and ***,estimated at~1 Ma during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition,can be explained by the establishment of unfavorable conditions in West Alps and Central Massif underlying the onset of the Apennine-Pyrenees disjunct ***,the strict association between members of the candidulus group and distinct Thymelaeaceae plants suggests further studies to address the hypothesis that speciation in these fea beetles might have been also associated with

The plastic flow behavior of bcc transition metals up to moderate temperatures is dominated by the thermally activated glide of screw dislocations,which in turn is determined by the atomic-scale screw dislocation core structure and the associated kink-pair nucleation mechanism for *** complex plasticity phenomena requires the simulation of many atoms and interacting dislocations and *** sizes are beyond the scope of first-principles methods and thus require empirical interatomic *** for the technological important case of bcc Fe,existing empirical interatomic potentials yield spurious ***,the structure and motion of the screw dislocations in Fe are studied using a new Gaussian Approximation Potential(GAP)for bcc Fe,which has been shown to reproduce the potential energy surface predicted by density-functional theory(DFT)and many associated *** Fe GAP predicts a compact,non-degenerate core structure,a single-hump Peierls potential,and glide on{110},consistent with DFT *** thermally activated motion at finite temperatures occurs by the expected kink-pair nucleation and propagation *** stress-dependent enthalpy barrier for screw motion,computed using the nudgedelastic-band method,follows closely a form predicted by standard theories with a zero-stress barrier of~1 eV,close to the experimental value of 0.84 eV,and a Peierls stress of~2 GPa consistent with DFT predictions of the Peierls potential.

Fruit size and shape are critical agronomical and pomological attributes and prime targets in peach breeding *** from the flat peach type,a Mendelian trait well-characterized at the genetic level,ample diversity of fruit size and shapes is present across peach ***,knowledge of the underlying genomic loci remains *** this work,fruit size and shape were assessed in a collection of non-flat peach accessions and selections,under controlled fruit load *** architecture of these traits was then dissected by combining association and linkage mapping,revealing a major locus on the proximal end of chromosome 6(qSHL/Fs6.1)explaining a large proportion of phenotypic variability for longitudinal shape and also affecting fruit size.A second major locus for fruit longitudinal shape(qSHL5.1),probably also affecting fruit size,was found co-localizing at locus G,suggesting pleiotropic effects of peach/nectarine *** additional QTL for fruit longitudinal shape(qSHL6.2)was identi fied in the distal end of chromosome 6 in a cross with an ornamental double-flower peach and co-localized with the Di2 locus,controlling flower *** assisting breeding activities,knowledge of loci controlling fruit size and shape paves the way for more in-depth studies aimed at the identification of underlying genetic variant(s).

In the present work the aerodynamic performances of an innovative rotor blade row have been experimentally investigated. Measurements have been carried out in a large scale low speed single stage cold flow facility at a Reynolds number typical of aeroengine cruise, under nominal and off-design conditions. The time-mean blade aerodynamic loadings have been measured at three radial positions along the blade height through a pressure transducer installed inside the hollow shaft, by delivering the signal to the stationary frame with a slip ring. The time mean aerodynamic flow fields upstream and downstream of the rotor have been measured by means of a five-hole probe to investigate the losses associated with the rotor. The investigations in the single stage research turbine allow the reproduction of both wake-boundary layer interaction as well as vortex-vortex interaction. The detail of the present results clearly highlights the strong dissipative effects induced by the blade tip vortex and by the momentum defect as well as the turbulence production, which is generated during the migration of the stator wake in the rotor passage. Phase-locked hot-wire investigations have been also performed to analyze the time-varying flow during the wake passing period. In particular the interaction between stator and rotor structures has been investigated also under off-design conditions to further explain the mechanisms contributing to the loss generation for the different conditions.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic,relapsing,non-contiguous,exudative eczema/dermatitis,which represents a complex,multi-factorial disorder,due to an impairment of the stratum corneum *** available drugs have a low skin bioavailability and may give rise to severe adverse ***,including nanoparticles,liposomes,nano-gels,nano-mixtures,nano-emulsions and other nano-carriers,offer unprecedented solutions to these issues,enabling:i)the management of different clinical forms of atopic dermatitis,especially the recalcitrant ones,i)a better bio-availability and trans-dermal drug targeted delivery at the inflammation site,ii)dose control,iii)significant improvements both in clinical symptoms and immune responses,iv)with less adverse events being reported and a better safety ***,some nano-sized structures could amplify and even worsen symptoms in particularly susceptible ***,most studies included in the present systematic review have been conducted in-vitro or in-vivo,with few randomized controlled clinical trials(RCTs).Future investigations should adopt this design in order to enable scholars achieving robust findings and ***,given the above-mentioned shortcomings,further research in the field is urgently warranted.

BACKGROUNDSmoking has detrimental effects on Crohn’s disease (CD) activity while data onulcerative colitis (UC) are conflicting. Little is known about the use and impact ofalternative smoking products in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).AIMTo understand the patients’ perceptions of the impact of smoking on their IBDand to assess differences between CD and UC *** questionnaire was developed by Philip Morris Products SA in cooperationwith European Federation of Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis Associations. Thefinal survey questionnaire consisted of 41 questions divided in 8 categories: (1)Subject screener;(2) Smoking history;(3) Background information;(4) IBD diseasebackground;(5) Current disease status;(6) Current therapeutics and medications;and (7) Current nicotine/cigarettes use and awareness of the impacts of smokingon IBD. The questionnaire was submitted online from 4th November 2019 to 11th March 2020 through the European Federation of Crohn's and Ulcerative ColitisAssociations website to IBD patients who were current smokers or had a historyof *** total 1050 IBD patients speaking nine languages participated to the *** them, 807 (76.9%) patients declared to have ever smoked or consumed analternative smoking product, with a higher proportion of current cigarettesmokers among CD patients (CD: 63.1% vs UC: 54.1%, P = 0.012). About twothirdsof the participants declared to have ever stopped cigarette smoking andrestarted (67.0%), with a significantly higher proportion among UC patientscompared to CD patients (73.1% vs 62.0%, P = 0.001).
