Color-coded perfluorocarbon nanodroplets for multiplexed ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging

Laser-activated perfluorocarb on n anodroplets are an emerging class of phase-cha nge, dual-c ontrast age nts that can be utilized in ultraso und and photoacoustic imaging. Through the ability.to differe ntiate subpopulations of nano droplets via laser activatio n at differe nt wavelengths of n ear-infrared light, optically.triggered color-coded perfluorocarb on nano droplets prese nt themselves as an attractive tool for multiplexed ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. In particular, laser-activated droplets can be used to provide quantitative spatiotemporal information regarding distinct biological targets, allowing for their potential use in a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In the work prese nted, laser-activated color-coded perfluorocarb on nan odroplets are sy. thesized to selectively.resp ond to laser irradiati on at corresp on ding wavele ngths. The dy. amic ultraso und and photoacoustic signals produced by.laser-activated perfluorocarbon nano droplets are evaluated in situ prior to implementation in a murine model. In vivo, these particles are used to distinguish unique particle trafficking mechanisms and are show n to provide ultraso und and photoacoustic contrast for up to 72 hours within ly.phatics. Overall, the con ducted studies show that laser-activated color-coded perfluorocarbo n nano droplets are a promising agent for multiplexed ultraso und and photoacoustic imaging.

Outcomes after combined excisional goniotomy.and manual small incision cataract surgery

AIM: To report the long-term outcomes of combined excisional goniotomy.and manual small incision cataract surgery.MSICS).METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of patients with open angle glaucoma and visually.significant cataracts that underwent combined excisional goniotomy.and MSICS with one-y.ar follow-up. The medical history. demographic information, and clinical characteristics of each case were recorded. Data regarding changes in vision, intraocular pressure(IOP), the number of glaucoma medications, and the evolution of the disease after surgery.were reported. RESULTS: Three patients, with open angle glaucoma and cataracts underwent combined excisional goniotomy.and MSICS without adverse events. All patients had improvement in vision compared to baseline measurements. The range of IOP at baseline was from 14 to 18 mm Hg and decrease to a range of 10 to 14 mm Hg after one y.ar of follow-up. Additionally. two patients also decreased their dependence on IOP-lowering medications at the last follow up visit with one patient maintaining baseline level of medication ***: A combination of excisional goniotomy.and MSICS illustrates both the safety.and efficacy.to treat patients with visually.significant cataract and glaucoma. This procedure allows for a more cost-effective surgical approach that matches the needs of resource strained territories around the globe.

Post-discharge complications after esophagectomy.account for high readmission rates

AIM: To identify.rates of post-discharge complications(PDC), associated risk factors, and their influence on early.hospital outcomes after ***: We used the 2005-2013 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality.Improvement Program(ACS-NSQIP) database to identify.patients ≥ 18 y.ars of age who underwent an esophagectomy. These procedures were categorized into four operative approaches: transhiatal, Ivor-Lewis, 3-holes, and non-gastric conduit. We selected patient data based on clinical relevance to patients undergoing esophagectomy.and compared demographic and clinical characteristics. The primary.outcome was PDC, and secondary.outcomes were hospital readmission and reoperation. The patients were then divided in 3 groups: no complication(Group 1), only.pre-discharge complication(Group 2), and PDC patients(Group 3). A modified Poisson regression analy.is was used to identify.risk factors associated with developing postdischarge complication, and risk ratios were ***: 4483 total patients were identified, with 8.9% developing PDC within 30-d after esophagectomy. Patients who experienced complications post-discharge had a median initial hospital length of stay.LOS) of 9 d; however, PDC occurred on average 14 d following surgery. Disaster Risk Governance as Assemblage: The Chilean Framework of the 1985 San Antonio Earthquake

The purpose of this article is to analy.e disaster risk governance through assemblage theory. identify.ng how-during the altered political context of a military.regime with a centralized disaster risk management as in the case of Chile in 1985-new actors emerge during the disaster response phase as a de/reterritorialization effect that is influenced by.their agencies and relationships, disfiguring the edges of the assemblage. Based on this conceptualization, it is possible to investigate the interactions between the different actors, their power relations, and their reconfigurations in the governance exercise. For this purpose, we reviewed the response phase of the 1985 San Antonio earthquake that affected the central zone of Chile, where strategic functions, institutions, and forms of power are *** describe and visualize the actors during the response phase in the disaster risk governance framework, a map of actors was developed that identifies the existing relationships and their different weights. The central scale proved to be dominant and occupied a political space that was transfigured by.its overrepresentation-enforced by.allies such as the banking sy.tem and business associations-enhancing a neoliberal agenda. The leaps in scale from the central scale to the local scale cancel agency.of the last, destabilizing its capacity.to deal with the effects of the earthquake and isolating it from the decision-making processes. Consequently.delay. in providing aid demonstrate that authoritarian governments do not provide better management in the disaster response phase.

This work shows the sy.thesis,characterization and evaluation of dense-ceramic membranes made of Ce_(0.85)Gd_(0.15)O_(2-δ)-LaNiO_(3)(CG-LN)composites,where the fluorite-perovskite ratio(CG:LN)was varied as follows:75:25,80:20 and 85:15 wt.%.Supports were initially.characterized by.XRD,SEM and electrical conductivity.using vacuum and oxy.en atmospheres),to determine the composition,microstructural and ionic-electronic conductivity.***,supports were infiltrated with an eutectic carbonates mixture,producing the corresponding dense dual-phase membranes,in which CO_(2)permeation tests were ***,CO_(2)permeation experiments were performed from 900 to 700℃,in the presence and absence of oxy.en(flowed in the sweep membrane side).Results showed that these composites possess high CO_(2)permeation properties,where the O_(2)addition significantly.improves the ionic conduction on the sweep membrane ***,the GC80-LN20 composition presented the best results due to the following phy.icochemical characteristics:high electronic and ionic conductivity.appropriate porosity.interconnected porous channels,as well as thermal and chemical stabilities between the composite support and carbonate phases.

It has been reported that one of the factors that promotes tumoral progression is the abnormal activation of the epithelial-mesenchy.al transition program. This process is associated with tumoral cells acquiring invasive and malignant properties and has the transcription factor zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1 （ZEB1） as one of its main activators. However, the role of ZEB1 in promoting malignancy.in prostate cancer （PC, a） is still unclear. Here, we report that ZEB1 expression correlates with Gleason score in PCa samples and that expression of ZEB1 regulates epithelial-mesenchy.al transition and malignant characteristics in PCa cell lines. The results showed that ZEB1 expression is higher in samples of higher malignancy.and that overexpression of ZEB1 was able to induce epithelial-mesenchy.al transition by.upregulating the mesenchy.al marker Vimentin and downregulating the epithelial marker E-Cadherin. On the contrary. ZEB 1 silencing repressed Vimentin expression and upregulated E-Cadherin. ZEB1 expression conferred enhanced motility.and invasiveness and a higher colony.formation capacity.to 22Rvl cells whereas DU145 cells with ZEB1 silencing showed a decrease in those same properties. The results showed that ZEB1 could be a key.promoter of tumoral progression toward advanced stages of PC, a.
