Litter production and leaf nutrient concentration and remobilization in response to climate seasonality in the central Amazon

Litterfall is the largest source of nutrients to for-est soils of tropical ***,variability in lit-terfall production,nutrient remobilization,and changes in leaf nutrient concentration with climate seasonality remain largely unknown for the central *** study meas-ured litterfall production,leaf nutrient remobilization,and leaf area index on a forest plateau in the central *** was measured at monthly intervals during 2014,while nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium,calcium and mag-nesium concentrations of leaf litter and canopy leaves were measured in the dry and rainy seasons,and remobilization rates *** area index was also recorded in the dry and rainy *** litterfall varied from 33.2(in the rainy season)to 87.6 g m^(-2) in the dry season,while leaf area index increased slightly in the rainy *** seasonality had no effect on concentrations of nitrogen,calcium,and magnesium,whereas phosphorous and potassium responded to rainfall seasonality *** phosphorous increased,potassium decreased during the dry *** seasons,nitrogen,potassium,and phosphorous decreased in leaf litter;calcium increased in leaf litter,while magnesium remained unaffected with leaf ***,the five nutrients had similar remobilization rates over the *** absence of climate seasonality on nutrient remobilization suggests that the current length of the dry season does not alter nutrient remobilization rates but this may change as dry periods become more prolonged in the future due to climate change.

We studied the effect of titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))nanoparticles(NPs)on dielectric behavior of Naþion-conducting salt-complexed polymer nanocomposite system formed from a binary polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide)(PeO)and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP),with the addition of both sodium metaperiodate(NaIO_(4))at concentration 10 wt.%and TiO_(2) NPs of size10 nm,at concentrations 1,2,3,4 and 5 wt.%.Free standing nanocomposite PeO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) films(150m)were characterized at room-temperature by analyzing their complex electrical impedance and dielectric spectra in the range 1 Hz–1 *** the concentration of 3 wt.%of TiO_(2) NPs,both ion conductivity and dielectric permittivity of the PeO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) ion-conducting dielectrics reach an enhancement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to nanoadditive-free case.

Comprehensive studies identify motor neuron spectrum disorders including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)as globally rising fatal disorders with the highest prevalence in aging populations,influenced by ethnicity and ancestry(GBD 2016 Motor Neuron Disease Colla borators,2018).While~10% of diagnoses involve a family history(fALS),most cases are considered sporadic(sALS).However,population-based studies suggest that even cases without a common index mutation impart heritability(Ryan et al.,2019),indicating a crucial role of rare and as yet unknown genetic denominators.

The spatial pattern distribution of plant hormones in response to aluminum (Al) toxicity in roots remains to be shown. This study was performed to assess the root hormonal accumulation and gene expression in response to Al toxicity in five transgenic miniature dwarf tomatoes cv. Micro-Tom (MT). MT and MT transgenics to acid indole acetic, cytokinin, gibberellin, abscisic acid and ethylene were cultivated in nutrient solutions containing different Al concentrations. Root growth elongation was measured and cellular damage was visualized by staining evans’s blue. The GUS reporter gene staining technique was used to visualize hormonal changes in MT apex root tissues. Data indicated that the MT is sensitive to Al that induced significant growth inhibition and cellular damage. Al concentration of 27 μM was significantly toxic, inducing root apex darkening and inhibition of root development. The qualitative evaluation of GUS reporter gene expression showed intense crosstalk among all hormones studied, underscoring the complexity of signaling induced by Al in apex roots. Results point out to a major understanding of the hormonal signaling in response to Al toxicity, which may induce a change of root growth and architecture with growth inhibition and cell constraints modulated by all different hormones evaluated.

Building on our previous work,we assess how social solidarity towards migrants and refugees has changed before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,by collecting and analyzing a large,novel,and longitudinal dataset of migration-related *** this end,we first annotate above 2000 tweets for(anti-)solidarity expressions towards immigrants,utilizing two annotation approaches(experts ***).On these annotations,we train a BeRT model with multiple data augmentation strategies,which performs close to the human upper *** use this high-quality model to automatically label over 240000 tweets between September 2019 and June *** then assess the automatically labeled data for how statements related to migrant(anti-)solidarity developed over time,before and during the COVID-19 *** findings show that migrant solidarity became increasingly salient and contested during the early stages of the pandemic but declined in importance since late 2020,with tweet numbers falling slightly below pre-pandemic levels in summer *** the same period,the share of anti-solidarity tweets increased in a sub-sample of COVID-19-related *** findings highlight the importance of long-term observation,pre-and post-crisis comparison,and sampling in research interested in crisis related *** one of our main contributions,we outline potential pitfalls of an analysis of social solidarity trends:for example,the ratio of solidarity and anti-solidarity statements depends on the sampling design,i.e.,tweet language,Twitter-user accounts’national identification(country known or unknown)and selection of relevant *** our sample,the share of anti-solidarity tweets is higher in native(German)language tweets and among“anonymous”Twitter users writing in German compared to english-language tweets of users located in Germany.

Habitat structure determines species occurrence and ***,human activities are altering natural habitat structure,potentially hampering native species due to the loss of nesting cavities,shelter or movement *** South American temperate rainforest is experiencing an accelerated loss and degradation,compromising the persistence of many native species,and particularly of the monito del monte(Dromiciops gliroides Thomas,1894),an arboreal marsupial that plays a key role as seed *** to compare 2 contrasting habitats(a native forest and a transformed habitat composed of abandoned eucalyptus plantations and native understory vegetation),we assessed ***’occurrence using camera traps and measured several structural features(*** and bamboo cover,deadwood presence,moss abundance)at 100 camera ***plementarily,we used radio telemetry to assess its spatial ecology,aiming to depict a more complete *** abundance was the only significant variable explaining *** occurrence between habitats,and no structural variable explained its occurrence at the transformed *** were no differences in home range,core area or inter-individual *** the transformed habitats,tracked individuals used native and eucalyptus-associated vegetation types according to their *** locations(and,hence,nesting sites)were located exclusively in native *** landscape heterogeneity resulting from the vicinity of native and eucalyptus-associated vegetation likely explains *** occurrence better than the habitat structure itself,as it may be use eucalyptus-associated vegetation for feeding purposes but depend on native vegetation for nesting.

The open science movement has gained significant momentum within the last few *** comes along with the need to store and share research artefacts,such as publications and research *** this purpose,research repositories need to be established.A variety of solutions exist for implementing such repositories,covering diverse features,ranging from custom depositing workflows to social media-like *** this article,we introduce the FAIReST principles,a framework inspired by the well-known FAIR principles,but designed to provide a set of metrics for assessing and selecting solutions for creating digital repositories for research *** goal is to support decision makers in choosing such a solution when planning for a repository,especially at an institutional *** metrics included are therefore based on two pillars:(1)an analysis of established features and functionalities,drawn from existing dedicated,general purpose and commonly used solutions,and(2)a literature review on general requirements for digital repositories for research artefacts and related *** further describe an assessment of 11 widespread solutions,with the goal to provide an overview of the current landscape of research data repository solutions,identifying gaps and research challenges to be addressed.

Studies in recent years have shown that aquatic pollution by microplastics(MPs)can be considered to pose additional stress to amphibian ***,our knowledge of how MPs affect amphibians is very rudimentary,and even more limited is our understanding of their effects in combination with other emerging ***,we aimed to evaluate the possible toxicity of polyethylene MPs(Pe-MPs)(alone or in combination with a mix of pollutants)on the health of Physalaemus cuvieri *** 30 days of exposure,multiple biomarkers were measured,including morphological,biometric,and developmental indices,behavioral parameters,mutagenicity,cytotoxicity,antioxidant and cholinesterase responses,as well as the uptake and accumulation of Pe-MPs in *** on the results,there was no significant change in any of the parameters measured in tadpoles exposed to treatments,but induced stress was observed in tadpoles exposed to Pe-MPs combined with themixture of pollutants,reflecting significant changes in physiological and biochemical *** principal component analysis(PCA)and integrated biomarker response(IBR)assessment,effects induced by pollutants in each test group were distinguished,confirming that the exposure of *** tadpoles to the Pe-MPs in combination with a mix of emerging pollutants induces an enhanced stress response,although the uptake and accumulation of Pe-MPs in these animalswas ***,our study provides newinsight into the danger to amphibians of MPs coexisting with other pollutants in aquatic environments.
