Apparent soil electrical conductivity in the delineation of management zones for cocoa cultivation

Apparent electrical conductivity is an important parameter for describing the spatial vari-ability of physical and chemical attributes of the soil and for the delineation of manage-ment *** objective of this work is to outline management zones for the cocoa cultivation based on the spatial variability of the productivity and the apparent electrical conductivity(ECa)of the *** collection was performed in a regular sample grid con-taining 120 points in an area cultivated with cocoa trees,located in the municipality of Ilhe´us,state of Bahia,*** each sampling point(cocoa tree),soil samples were col-lected to determine chemical *** was measured for one year,counting,monthly,the number of fruits,which were classified into off-season cocoa,harvest and annual *** of the apparent electrical conductivity of the soil were performed at different times of the year using a portable conductivity *** data were analyzed using classical statistics and *** management zones were delin-eated using the fuzzy k-means *** ideal number of class was defined using the fuzziness performance index(FPI)and the entropy of the modified partition(MPE)*** Kappa coefficient was used to validate the management zones,assessing their agreement with the chemical attributes of the *** ECa of the soil values pre-sented moderate temporal variation,with maximum amplitude of 19.37 mS m1 and min-imum of 0.82 mS m1 between measurement periods;higher averages of the ECa coincided with the highest levels of water in the *** measurements of the ECa of the soil carried out in April and October showed greater correlation with the chemical attributes of the soil,with significant values for 11 and 8 of the 17 attributes evaluated,*** man-agement zones from the ECa measured in April showed:a)reduced number of classes;b)spatial continuity between classes,and;c)agreement from reasonable(kappa between

Mesenteric Adenitis as a Differential Appendicitis Diagnosis: Case Report

Mesenteric adenitis consists of an important differential diagnosis of potentially serious diseases such as acute appendicitis, since they manifest themselves with a similar clinical picture. Case report: A 17-year-old male patient presented with periumbilical abdominal pain for 2 days, of abrupt onset and moderate intensity, who gave away with a common analgesic, which progressed to the right iliac fossa (RIF) and increased of intensity. He also reported liquid diarrhea, with several episodes a day, without mucus and/or blood, 38°C fever, anorexia and vomiting. He was hospitalized for investigating a possible diagnostic of Acute Appendicitis. In the exams, it was considered mesenteric adenitis, and antibiotic therapy was prescribed. The patient had complete improvement at the end of treatment. Conclusions: Given its importance as a differential diagnosis of numerous pathologies, as well as controversial before the therapeutic and diagnostic conduct, it is essential to report these cases in order to elucidate the specificities of this disease.

Virulence Factors in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from ICU Units in Brazil

Species of Staphylococcus are common in hospital infection (HI). Methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has also become a serious problem in Brazilian HI. The aim of this study was to characterize the pathogenicity of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolated in public hospitals. The clinical isolates were obtained from intensive care unit. The MRSA and MSSA strains were genotyped by PCR for detection genes related to virulence factors. Moreover, the strains were tested for biofilm formation and cytokine induction in macrophages. Three strains of MRSA (9.68%) expressed the Sea gene, one (3.23%) Seb, 17 (54.84%) Spa and seven (22.58%) had PVL. Two MSSA strains (2.98%) expressed the Sea gene, three (4.48%) Seb, 18 (26.87%) Spa and 11 (16.42%) showed positive results for the PVL gene. There was no expression of Sec and CflA between MRSA and MSSA strains. Among MRSA and MSSA isolates, none statistical differences were observed in biofilm production. The analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response of J774 macrophages by MRSA and MSSA isolates did not show statistical difference. Understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis of S. aureus could provide important clues for both preventing and treating infection caused by these organisms.

Dissolution of FeNb in liquid steel and best practices to increase niobium recovery during ladle refining

This paper presents a microstructural characterization of standard ferroniobium(FeNb) and a study of its dissolution in *** dissolution trials at different temperatures were carried out in a laboratory induction *** microstructure at the interface between solid FeNb and frozen steel was analyzed and compared with the original FeNb *** results allowed clarifying both the FeNb dissolution mechanism and its incorporation kinetics at steelmaking *** results from the dissolution of standard FeNb in liquid steel proved that the dissolution rates of FeNb particles were higher than those reported in the pertinent literature,where models assume that FeNb dissolves only by the diffusion of solid particles due to its high melting temperatures(over 1 600℃).Most recent FeNb phase diagrams and DTA analyses have shown that standard FeNb begins to melt down below 1 600℃.The experimental evidences in this work have led to the adoption of a new description of the dissolution mechanism whereby standard FeNb dissolves predominantly by the melting of its eutectic zones at 1500℃to 1510℃and,later on,by the melting of the primary laths between 1530℃and 1575℃,i.e.,below the steelmaking temperatures of around 1 600℃.Based on these results and on previous melting-shop experience,this paper recommends the best practices for the addition of FeNb during the microalloyed steels secondary refining phase.

Virulence Factor Profile of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Bovine Milk from Brazil

This study investigates the biofilm formation, presence and distribution of virulence genes and the capacity to induce an inflammatory response in strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk samples in Bahia, Brazil. A total of 132 samples of raw milk were collected from four dairy farms (designated A to D) located in southwestern Bahia, in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, from October/2009 to September/2010. After processing of the samples, 94 (71.2%) S. aureus isolates were obtained. These strains were subjected to the antibiogram method MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration). As for the pathogenicity, tests were performedin vitrobiofilm formation induced by glucose. Moreover, we performed PCR for their virulence genes: sea (enterotoxin A), seb (B), sec (C), pvl (Panton-Valentine Leukocidin), clfA (Clumping Factor A) and spa (protein A) and analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response of J774 macrophages by exocellular lipoteichoic acid. No isolates were resistant to oxacillin and vancomycin. In biofilm production, 5.31% (5/94) isolates did not produce biofilm, 5.31% (5/94) of the samples were poor producers, 15.96% (15/94) strains were moderate producers, 18.09% (17/94) were producers and 55.32% (55/94) of isolates were strong biofilm producers. One (1.06%) isolate expressed the seb gene, one (1.06%) sec, 18 (19.2%) cflA and 44 (46.8%) had spa. There was no expression of sea and pvl between isolates analyzed. The analysis of cytokine induction in the inflammatory response did not show statistical difference in the levels of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 induction. However, there was statistical difference in IL-1 induction between isolates from different farms. Thus, it appears that the results obtained in this study show significant effects for the region studied, since it is an important dairy region, hence the need for further studies, with the intent of attracting funding that contributes to improving prevention and control in both dai

Background:Venous ulcer represents the most advanced stage of chronic venous *** is an important public health problem and has a significant impact on patients’quality of life due to chronic pain,inability to work,need for hospitalization and frequent outpatient ***:We investigated the treatment benefits of far-infrared ceramic(cFIR),in a 90-day study of lower limb venous ulcers and looked at ulcer healing scores,quality of life,serum bio-markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense ***,setting,participants and interventions:This is a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study conducted in the Vascular Surgery Service of a hospital located in the northwest region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul,*** included patients with lower limb venous ulcers who were randomized to use either a bioceramics wrap or a placebo wrap for 90 *** outcome measures:The following evaluations were conducted at baseline and after 15,30,60 and90 days:ulcer healing score,quality of life,and serum markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme ***:Patients(n=24)with lower limb venous ulcers were randomized into two treatment *** decreased the ulcer size on day 30(P=0.042)and 90(P=0.034)and the total ulcer healing scale scores on day 30(P=0.049)and 90(P=0.02)of the treatment,when compared to ***,cFIR improved tissue type(epithelial tissue)on day 60(P=0.022)when compared to baseline ***:cFIR clinically improved ulcer healing in patients with lower limb venous *** registration:RBR-8c7xzn on ReBEC.

We describe key production-related traits of trahira(Hoplias malabaricus),an aquaculture candidate species,in a semi-intensive fish farming *** quantified growth from hatch through grow-out at two stocking densities and evaluated fillet protein,lipids and fatty-acid *** made 2430 observations of growth and morphometrics on 270 juvenile fish allocated to four fish ponds,two at 5 fish/m^(2)(90 animals)and two at 10 fish/m^(2)(180 animals)through 11 *** fish reached an average length of 27.5 cm(±0.38)and 27.0 cm(±0.24),and weight of 263.0 g(±10.54)and 246.7 g(±6.89),respectively,at the low and high *** was no significant difference in weight(P>0.05)between the densities for any of the parameters assessed,and hence the same growth curve applied to both densities(A=292.9;B=28.1;and K=0.65).Standard length,however,differed significantly(P<0.05)between densities,with K=0.35 at the low and K=0.29 at the high *** both stocking densities,total lipids increased throughout the trial,while protein content *** acid(C18:0)increased throughout the experimental period,while docosahexaenoic acid and the n3/n6 profile decreased,with no differences among stocking *** malabaricus may prove a viable aquaculture species in Neotropical regions,where development of native species may contribute to sustainable aquaculture production.

Photodynamic Therapy in the Healing of the Areolo-Papillary Complex after Mastectomy—Case Report

Some breast reconstruction surgeries after mastectomy, or even reductive mammoplasty, may evolve unexpectedly when the areolopapillary complex heals and develop dehiscences, necrosis and delayed healing. The purpose of this case report was to verify the efficacy of photodynamic therapy in wound healing of the areolopapillary complex. This was a case report of a female patient with diabetes, fibromyalgia and diagnosed with breast cancer, with necrotic areolopapillary complex, after debridement, photodynamic therapy started with clobetasol propionate associated with methylene blue and low power laser application. At the beginning of the treatment with photodynamic therapy, the wound had 6 centimeters of diameter, and after 19 sessions, the wound was closed completely with normalization of the color of the nipple. The photodynamic therapy is advancing a lot in healing of infected wounds and complex wounds. It can be said that in this case report, photodynamic therapy was fundamental for the complete healing, being considered a promising treatment and another alternative for dermatofunctional physiotherapists.
