Anthropometric Analysis of the Upper Eyelid and Eyebrow in Patients Attended by the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service of the Hospital Central Sur de Petróleos Mexicanos

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed surgeries by plastic surgeons worldwide. A prospective observational study was conducted to describe the anthropometric measurements of the upper eyelid and eyebrow in a Mexican population. The researcher measured the anthropometry of the eyelids and eyebrows to establish the diagnosis and surgical plan according to the checklist created and applied by the plastic and reconstructive surgery service. In anatomical position with a caliper instrument, the marginal reflex distance (MRD1), the tarsal thickness, the length of the vertical and horizontal slit, and finally the distance at which the external canthus is located with respect to the internal canthus were measured in millimeters. For the anthropometry of the eyebrows, the distance from the eyebrows to the hairline, the position in millimeters of the orbital rim with respect to the eyebrow, and the angle of its apex were measured. A sample of 210 patients was obtained, of which 65 were male and 145 females, divided by age groups. It was observed that in the three age groups, females presented a vertical palpebral fissure with a higher mean than males. Similar is the case of tarsal thickness, in which the difference was significantly greater in the female of the three age groups. On the other hand, it was observed that the horizontal slit in males was higher than that of females, while the MDR1 was similar in both sexes. Finally, it was identified that in the group of 41 to 50 years old significant decreases are observed both in the vertical cleft, tarsal thickness and the position of the external canthus compared to the group of 20 to 30 years old, this is due to the aging process. Surgical Complications in Breast Reconstruction: Assessment and Associations

Introduction: Breast cancer represents a pathology that generates catastrophic impact and has recently increased its incidence and survival due to timely diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, improving the quality of life of cancer survivors has become a priority, offering reconstructive procedures that reduce complications, costs, hospital stay, and optimize resources. Material and methods: 264 patients reconstructed with autologous tissue (TRAM flap and latissimus dorsi) and alloplastic (breast tissue expander—breast implant and direct breast implant) were included. Variables such as demographic, anthropometric, and histologic type were collected. Results: 62% were reconstructed through the use of alloplastics and 38% with autologous tissue. The risk factors related to a greater probability of immediate postoperative complications (surgical site infection, surgical wound dehiscence and reconstruction failure) were obesity (OR: 2.1, CI: 1.5 - 2.7), preoperative radiation (OR: 1.89, CI: 1.75 - 1.92), arterial hypertension (OR: 1.2), Diabetes Mellitus (OR: 1.78) and smoking (OR: 1.31). Conclusions: The reconstructive process is complex and influenced by patient factors, surgeon experience and the hospital center. However, when choosing the reconstructive strategy, risk factors present in each patient must be considered, since radiation and obesity present a greater probability of postoperative complications.

Isolation of Microorganisms According to Burned Body Surface: Experience in a Reference Center in Mexico City

Background: Burns is one of the most common and severe forms of trauma, as they cause an alteration in the protective barrier exerted by the skin. The objective of this work is to describe the bacterial pathogens that cause infections in the different body segments as well as to know the susceptibility in patients with burns during a period of two years. Methods: This study was conducted over a period of 2 years, January 2017 to January 2019. The analysis of the isolated microbiological agents was obtained from culture samples in different anatomic areas. The variables were measured in the general population and also by groups, considering: age, sex, TBSA with Wallace's rule of nine, anatomic area affected, type of burn, depth of burn, microorganism reported in cultures, antibiotics empirically administered and mortality rate. Results: Regardless of the anatomical segment studied, the most frequently isolated microorganism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Conclusions: Identification of the microorganisms that cause infection reduces the hospital stay, as well as the admission to the ICU. A fundamental research guideline is to pay more attention to the post-burn consequences, and the sequelae and functional limitations that it entails, since few since few studies focus on this aspect.

Background: The trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor tendon, is a common cause of hand disability;This can result in significant limitations in certain daily living activities. It is possible to treat this condition with conservative or surgical methods. Methods: This is a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study. The source population consisted of all patients with a diagnosis of trigger finger who had been treated in the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery of our institution between 2020 and 2023. The primary objective of this study is to determine the prevalence and characterize the clinical and surgical characteristics of the population affected by trigger finger in our hospital. Results: The total population was 237 patients, of which 165 were women (70%) and 72 men (30%). The most affected hand was the right hand, with a total of 158 patients (67%). In the right hand, the middle finger was the most affected (45%). Of the 237 patients, 80 of them had obesity (34%), 86 had type 2 diabetes mellitus (36%), 95 had systemic arterial hypertension (40%). Open technique was performed in 190 (80%) patients, while percutaneous technique was performed in 47 (20%) of them. Conclusion: The female sex was twice as frequent, and the middle finger and thumb were the most affected. Most of the patients received surgical treatment with open approach and percutaneous approach in 20% of them.

African swine fever(ASF)is a highly lethal disease of domestic and wild swine caused by African swine fever virus(ASFV).The disease currently circulates in Africa,Europe,Asia and on the island of *** ongoing epizootics in Europe and Asia have produced millions of animal deaths and severe economic *** effective vaccine is available for ASF,making rapid and accurate detection of ASFV essential for disease mitigation *** available diagnostics for ASFV possess significant limitations related to assay performance,deployability,and/or turn-around time;therefore there is an unmet need for pen-side diagnostic tests with sufficient sensitivity and specificity.A chromatographic lateral flow immunoassay(LFIA)was developed for the detection of ASFV antigen in EDTA-treated whole blood using monoclonal antibodies targeting the viral p30 *** assay requires only water to perform and provides results in 25 min,making it well-suited for field *** LFIA was capable of detecting genotype I and genotype II strains of ASFV in EDTA blood from experimentally infected pigs at varying time-points after infection,though it was unable to detect a genotype X ASFV *** sensitivity correlated with clinical disease severity,body temperature,and viral DNA levels,and was over 90%in animals showing moderate to severe ASF-related symptoms after challenge with virulent genotype II *** LFIA also showed a robust diagnostic specificity of over 98%,which is essential to field testing for a high consequence to foregin animal *** LFIA targeting the viral p30 protein can reliably detect ASFV in whole blood from animals showing moderate to severe clinical signs of infection with virulent genotype I and II isolates,making it a promising candidate for use as a field-deployable antigen detection *** evaluation using field samples and different virus strains is required to further assess the utility of this rapid diagnostic test.

Removal of sodium diclofenac from aqueous solutions by rice hull biochar

Diclofenac is an ecotoxic pharmaceutical compound affecting both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems even at low *** this study,batch adsorption experiments were conducted to remove sodium diclofenac(SD)from aqueous solutions using rice hull biochar(RHB)*** SD removals were obtained with increasing initial SD concentration,RHB dosage,contact time,and decreasing initial *** studies revealed that Langmuir isotherm best fitted the experimental data with the highest coefficient of determination for both pH 2(R2=0.9827)and pH 7(R2=0.9460).For kinetic studies,the pseudo second-order model gave R2=0.9999 for both pH 2 and pH *** removals reached up to 97%at pH 2 and up to 80%at pH *** SD removals were achieved at solution pH lower than the adsorbent pHpzc since electrostatic repulsion was ***-transform infrared analysis showed the major involvement of C=O in the adsorption *** study demonstrated the potential of using agricultural residues such as rice hulls for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with pharmaceutical compounds.

We analyzed the distributional patterns of95 selected species of leptosporangiate ferns inhabiting the Mexican Mountain Component, using grid-cells of one geographical degree as unit areas,applying endemism indices and richness and beta diversity *** data were obtained from several herbaria and specialized *** grid-cells appear to be important for fern species richness, as they contain 35 to 49 *** gridcells are located in the Sierra Madre Oriental(SMO),Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt(TMVB) and the Sierra Madre del Sur(SMS).Mean richness by latitudinal belts of one degree showed that the belts with highest values are related to the TMVB and SMS.A total of 13grid-cells were recognized as important from theperspective of endemism; most of them are located also in the SMO, TMVB and *** richest gridcells coincided with one of the main centres of endemism for ferns obtained in this study, located in the convergence of the southern part of the SMO, the eastern portion of the TMVB and the northern part of the SMS, reflecting the high humidity existing on the mountain slopes facing the Gulf of *** important grid-cells recognized from richness and endemism analyses coincide with Mexican Natural Protected *** beta diversity analysis showed a low degree of similarity among grid-cells, implying a high species replacement, as the result of environmental heterogeneity occurring in the Mexican mountain *** the other hand, the spatial analysis suggested a pattern of phytogeographical regionalization comprising twomain areas: the Mexican Transition Zone and the Mexican Central *** play an important role in the Mexican biodiversity and contributing to the beta diversity of Mexico.

Relationship between Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Nutrition and the Severity of the Vascular Fusariosis

The vascular fusariosis is one of the main obstacles in the tomato crop production. Currently, the management of the nutrient solution is presented as a control option for fusariosis, for such reason different nutrient solutions with nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) modifications;in four saladette tomato varieties Bony Best (BB), Manapal (M), Walter (W) and FLA were evaluated in this research, in order to analyze the damage caused by Fusarium oxysporum ***. lycopersici (FOL) severity. Tomato plants were inoculated with 3 FOL breeds, establishing a completely random design with a factorial arrangement with six repetitions. Disease’s severity was evaluated 30 days after the inoculation using levels of (0 - 4) of the methodology established by Marlatt and Correll (1988). Afterwards, a statistical analysis was done through the Kruskal Wallis test, in which it was observed that treatments 93 (Ca 207 mg∙L-1, R3, variety BB), 95 (207 mg∙L-1 Ca, R3, variety W), 81 (0Ca, R3, BB) showed less disease severity. In the foliar analysis, the best treatments were 22 (193 mg∙L-1 N, R3, M) for N, the greatest P content was treatment 94 (207 mg∙L-1 Ca, R3, M) for K treatment three and 93 (207 mg∙L-1 Ca, R3, variety BB) greatest Ca content.
