Objective: Although Angelica archangelica is a medicinal and aromatic plant with a long history of use for both medicinal and food purposes, there are no studies regarding the antineoplastic activity of its *** study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity and antitumor effects of the crude extract of A. archangelica root(CEAA) on breast ***: The cytotoxicity of CEAA against breast adenocarcinoma cells(4T1 and MCF-7) was evaluated by a 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2-H-tetrazolium bromide(MTT) assay. Morphological and biochemical changes were detected by Hoechst 33342/propidium iodide(PI) and annexin V/PI staining. Cytosolic calcium mobilization was evaluated in cells staining with FURA-4 NW. Immunoblotting was used to determine the effect of CEAA on anti-and pro-apoptotic proteins(Bcl-2 and Bax, respectively).The 4 T1 cell-challenged mice were used for in vivo ***: Using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, angelicin, a constituent of the roots and leaves of A. archangelica, was found to be the major constituent of the CEAA evaluated in this study(73 mg/mL). The CEAA was cytotoxic for both breast cancer cell lines studied but not for human fibroblasts. Treatment of 4 T1 cells with the CEAA increased Bax protein levels accompanied by decreased Bcl-2 expression, in the presence of cleaved caspase-3 and cytosolic calcium mobilization, suggesting mitochondrial involvement in breast cancer cell death induced by the CEAA in this cell line. No changes on the Bcl-2/Bax ratio were observed in CEAA-treated MCF7 cells. Gavage administration of the CEAA(500 mg/kg) to 4T1 cell-challenged mice significantly decreased tumor growth when compared with untreated ***: Altogether, our data show the antitumor potential of the CEAA against breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Further research is necessary to better elucidate the pharmacological application of the CEAA in breast cancer therapy.

Layered double hydroxide(LDH)conversion coatings loaded with corrosion inhibitors were suggested for the surface treatment of the aluminum alloy 2024-T3,prior to friction spot joining with carbon-fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide(AA2024-T3/CF-PPs).Vanadate was used as a model corrosion *** shear testing method revealed an increase of approx.20%of the joint’s adhesion performance when treated with LDH and before exposure to salt *** evaluation of the joints after exposure to salt spray demonstrated a significant difference in the corrosion behavior of the joints when the AA2024-T3 is treated with LDH loaded with nitrate and vanadate *** LDH intercalated with nitrate revealed a clear improvement in the mechanical and corrosion resistance performance of the joints,even after 6 weeks of salt ***,the LDH intercalated with vanadate failed in providing protection against corrosion as well as preserving the mechanical properties of the *** effect of the galvanic corrosion was further investigated by zero resistance ammeter(ZRA)measurements as well as localized scanning vibrating electrode technique(sVET).

Effectiveness of different biochars in remediating a salt-affected Luvisol in Northeast Brazil

Biochar has been proposed as a soil amendment to reclaim salt-affected ***,the evaluation of the different biochar types in these soils is essential due to the significant variation among biochar *** this study,biochars from sugarcane bagasse(sB),orange bagasse(OB),and corncob(CB)were applied alone and in the presence of gypsum(G)to test their potential to remediate a highly degraded saline-sodic soil in Brazil´s Northeast *** that,we conducted a laboratory column-leaching experiment and a greenhouse *** the column-leaching test,we analyzed the sodium adsorption ratio(sAR),the electrical conductivity of the saturation extract(ECe),the concentrations of major ions,and the exchangeable sodium percentage(EsP).Maize plants were grown in the leached soil in a ***-and corncob-derived biochars were more efficient than gypsum in reducing the soil salinity,bringing the indicators below threshold values,and optimizing soil reclamation *** ECe,sAR,and EsP were reduced to 3.42 ds m−1,1.64(mmolc dm−3)0.5 and 4.86%,respectively,in the sB treatment;and to 3.19 ds m−1,0.88(mmolc dm−3)0.5 and 2.53%,respectively,in the CB *** bagasse biochar did not effectively reduce the salinity *** biochar treatments improved seed germination and plant *** sB,CB,sBG,and CBG treatments increased plant height(478–558%),shoot mass(783–983%),and root mass(386–500%),***,the application of sB and CB is an effective alternative to remediate saline-sodic soils and to reduce the impact of soil salinity in the environment.

Curcumin,a natural product,has exhibited promising effects in both animal models and clinical trials,interacting with a multitude of factors linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD).These factors encompass cytokines,oxidative stress-associated enzymes,and modulation of the intestinal ***,curcumin has demonstrated therapeutic potential in animal models of colitis,wherein it exerts a negative regulatory influence on pivotal signaling pathways such as PI3/Akt,JAK/sTAT,andβ-***,it inhibits the expression of proinflammatory enzymes and co-stimulatory molecules(including RANKL,ICAM-1,CD205,CD256,TLR4,among others),while curbing immune cell chemotaxis,thereby attenuating the characteristic neutrophil infiltration observed in *** facet of curcumin’s action involves its modulation of the intestinal ***,the microbiota itself contributes to beneficial biotrans formations of curcumin,thereby enhancing its effectiveness in IBD *** a clinical front,curcumin has demonstrated the ability to induce clinical and/or endoscopic remission without any reported toxic ***,curcumin warrants consideration as an adjunctive therapy in IBD *** clinical investigations should concentrate on meticulously evaluating curcumin’s impact on these precise therapeutic targets.

Hydrogeochemical Research of surface Water of the Córrego sujo Watershed, Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil

The surface water quality was investigated in the Córrego sujo watershed, located in the municipality of Teresópolis, a mountainous region in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The emphasis focused on inorganic parameters of water, since there are applications of pesticides in agricultural cultivations. The natural and anthropogenic contributions of the study area were monitored monthly in eight sites in the river channels of the drainage basin. The results were analyzed using an ICP-OEs spectrophotometer and subsequently compared to Conama Resolution 357/05. In order to support the interpretation of the results of water quality, flow and precipitation data were measured in the watershed, along with the land use and vegetation cover map produced from a GeoEye satellite image. The study revealed that the surface waters were in high concentrations and above those recommended by Conama Resolution. It was noted also that the lithological and pedological variables influenced the results of water quality. Regarding seasonality, it has not been possible to establish a common standard to all elements in the rainy season or dry season, however, in the analysis of each parameter separately, there was evidence of a concentration distribution in temporal variation. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that it is also necessary to highlight these issues in the territorial planning of the municipality and in the management of the Committee of Rio Piabanha watershed, to avoid the increasing of uncontrolled expansion of irrigated crops and intensive use of agrochemical inputs.

The Knowledge and Participation of the Father in Breast Feeding, salvador, Brazil

The most fundamental influence in the breastfeeding process is the father’s support. The mother feels safer in breastfeeding when she has her partner’s support and a more active and effective participation. This study aimed at evaluating the father’s knowledge about breastfeeding in a quantitative approach through a transversal cohort study, interviewing 78 fathers in a public maternity in salvador. The average age of the interviewees was 29.9 years and 53.8% had an incomplete fundamental schooling. Regarding knowledge of the subject, 10.3% believed that breastfeeding can be substituted. All fathers interviewed answered that they support breastfeeding for their children and believe in its benefits;39.7% reported that their opinion could interfere their partner’s decision to prolong the process. Moreover, 69.2% of the males attended their partner’s antenatal meetings, and of these, over a third had no intervention on the subject. Of all the participants, 80.8% confirmed that they had participated in the breastfeeding process and emphasized their gratification during this phase. About the paternal opinion, 39.7% believed that there is a degree of influence over the partner’s decision to breastfeed, and for that reason 50% told the mother their opinion. The study widened the knowledge about the role of the father in breastfeeding, ratifying the importance of their support towards the mother in this process, ultimately contributing to improving the practice and benefiting the mother-child relationship. Therefore, we conclude that those interviewed have some knowledge about breastfeeding, recognize its importance during the process and would like to know more.
