Implications of Stahl's Theorems to Holomorphic Embedding Part I: Theoretical Convergence

Successive Approximation of p-Class Towers

Let F be a number field and p be a prime. In the successive approximation theorem, we prove that, for each integer n ≥ 1, finitely many candidates for the Galois group of the nth stage of the p-class tower over F are determined by abelian type invariants of p-class groups C1pE of unramified extensions E/F with degree [E : F] = pn-1. Illustrated by the most extensive numerical results available currently, the transfer kernels (TE, F) of the p-class extensions TE, F : C1pf → C1pE from F to unramified cyclic degree-p extensions E/F are shown to be capable of narrowing down the number of contestants significantly. By determining the isomorphism type of the maximal subgroups S G of all 3-groups G with coclass cc(G) = 1, and establishing a general theorem on the connection between the p-class towers of a number field F and of an unramified abelian p-extension E/F, we are able to provide a theoretical proof of the realization of certain 3-groups S with maximal class by 3-tower groups of dihedral fields E with degree 6, which could not be realized up to now.

A Simple and Dependable Technique for Pancreatic-Enteric Anastomosis with a Soft Pancreas and Nondilated Duct

Background:?Pancreatic anastomotic leakаgе is one of the most serious complications following pancreaticoduodenectomy?(PD).?The most significant?riskfactors?for?pancreatic leakage are pancreatic texture,?main pancreatic duct (MPD)?size and anastomotic technique. Herewith we describe?our?technical modifications for?single-layer?pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) with a soft pancreas and nondilated?MPD?for reconstruction?after?PD.?Methods: We report our early experience using this technique in 52 patients who underwent PD between May 2009?and?December?2012.?Results:?Overall postoperative mortality rate was1.92%.?Postoperative morbidity rate was 32.69%, with?major complications occurring in?three?patients (5.77%).?Pancreatic leak was?diagnosed?in sixpatients (11.54%). Three?patients with?pancreatic fistulae (pf)?of Grades A and B were?managed conservatively, whereas?three?other?patients with pf?of?Grade?C required relaparotomy.?Conclusions:?According to our early experience with this?modified technique for PJ,?usage of?horizontal mattress?sutures, “everting”?of MPD and incorporation of its wall into a?single layer pancreatic-enteric anastomosis?result in a low pancreatic anastomotic leakagerate?after?PD. This technique for PJ?with a soft pancreas and nondilated ductensures ideal?preconditions for anastomosis healing. They consist of?an excellent blood supply, an anatomical?position with tension-free approximation and unobstructed?pancreatic juice flow from the pancreas into the jejunal?loop.

Biomechanical Comparison of Prototype of a Novel Intramedullary Injectable Bioresorbable Polymer-Bioresorbable Balloon Osteosynthesis and a Volar Locking Plate for Treatment of Distal Radius Fractures

Background: There is a large assortment of modalities for the surgical treatment/management of distal radius fractures (DRFs), where the most widely used is the fixed-angle volar plating (VLP) system, which, sometimes, is referred to as the “surgical modality of choice”. While outcomes with each modality are usually good to excellent, each has its share of shortcomings and complications. Thus, there is scope for improvements to existing modalities and/or introduction of new ones. Study Purpose: We introduce a novel modality, namely, the prototype of an intramedullary injectable bioresorbable polymer-bioresorbable balloon osteosynthesis (IPBO) system, and investigated its plausibility. Experimental Procedures: The biomechanical performance of a construct comprising a synthetic distal radius (fourth-generation Sawbones?) on which a simulated fracture was created (4-mm wide osteotomy positioned 25 mm from the most distal end of the radius) and fixated with a placement of the IPBO system (SIPBO Construct) was compared to that when the fixation was with an approved Ti-6Al-4V alloy VLP system (SVLP Construct), under a clinically-relevant compressive loading protocol. Performance involved determination of quantitative parameters of the construct (initial longitudinal stiffness (ICLS), final longitudinal stiffness (FCLS), and load-to-failure (pf)) and observation and recording of features of the construct at the fracture point. We also determined the quantitative parameters for the intact synthetic distal radius (control). Results: For each of the quantitative parameters, the range of values for SIPBO Construct was within that for SVLP Construct, suggesting that the IPBO System is a plausible modality. Also, for SIPBO Construct, failure occurred within the polymer zone, whereas, for SVLP Construct, some failure features were fracture of the cortical wall and of the dorsal proximal fragments. Evaluation of Three Rapid Diagnostic Test Kits in the Diagnosis of <i>Plasmodium</i>Species Infections among Primary School Children in Baringo County, Kenya

Background: Due to the difficulty in implementing microscopy-based definitive diagnosis of malaria especially in resource-poor areas, rapid diagnostic test (RDT) kits as alternatives have been developed by different companies. Kits from different companies may differ in sensitivity and specificity. It is therefore imperative to conduct field evaluation of kits from different manufacturers before they are recommended for widespread use in diagnosis of malaria. The present study sought to evaluate the performance of malaria RDT kits from two manufacturers against microscopy in detection of Plasmodium spp. infections among primary school children in Baringo County, Kenya. Methods: Two cross-sectional comparative surveys to assess three RDT kits (CareStart HRP-2, SD Bioline Ag-pf and SD Bioline Ag-pf/Pan) were conducted on 561 pupils from three primary schools within the Kerio Valley of Baringo County, Kenya. Results: A total of 561 blood samples were tested for Plasmodium spp. within a period of four months. SD Bioline Ag-pf/ Pan RDT kit had a higher sensitivity (90%) compared to that of CareStart HRP-2 (70%) but this was not statistically significant (McNemar’s χ2 = 0.5, df = 1, p = 0.4795). The sensitivity of SD Bioline Ag-pf was the same as that of Care Start HRP-2 (82.4%). The number of positive samples by microscopy was relatively lower than those detected by RDT kits. Two cases of non-P. falciparum infections were detected by RDT kits during the second survey. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that the performance of the three kits in the diagnosis of P. falciparum infections was better than microscopy. The sensitivity of SD Bioline Ag-pf/Pan was slightly greater than that of Care Start HRP-2, although not statistically different.

Predominance of Plasmodium malariae-falciparum Co-Infection by Molecular Speciation in Bangolan, North West Region of Cameroon

Although microscopy still remains the gold standard for the diagnosis of malaria, rapid diagnostic tests （RDTs） and PCR assays have been shown to be sensitive and specific. Very few comparative studies have been reported of the three diagnostic methods on the same samples in vulnerable groups. Microscopy, RDTs and PCR assays were used for detection and speciation of Plasmodium falciparum （P）＇）, Plasmodium malariae （Pm） and Plasmodium ovale （Po） in patients in a rice culture savanna ecotype. Fifty four children and 16 pregnant women presenting with a fever were recruited. Bloods collected was used for thin and thick smears, perform RDTs and spotted blood on filter paper for DNA extraction and performance of a PCR. Mean parasitaemia was 37,619.06 （＋ 33,599.04） p/pL and 7,512.5 （＋ 12,446.11） p/μL for children and pregnant women, respectively. A total of 87.14% were positive by microscopy, 85.71% by RDTs and 90% by PCR. Distribution of Plasmodium species as identified by PCR was 72.86% pf/Pm, 11.43% pf/Pm/Po and 5.43% Pm while 10% were negative. Cohen＇s Kappa value for PCR and RDTs was K = 0.75 （CI = 0.28-1.22） while PCR and microscopy was K = 0.64 （CI = 0.18-1.10）. Malaria infection in Bangolan was mostly due to mix infection predominantly P. falciparum/P, malariae.

Background: Tree species represent 20% of the vascular plant species worldwide and they play a crucial role in the global functioning of the biosphere. The Mediterranean Basin is one of the 36 world biodiversity hotspots, and it is estimated that forests covered 82% of the landscape before the first human impacts, thousands of years ago. However, the spatial distribution of the Mediterranean biodiversity is still imperfectly known, and a focus on tree species constitutes a key issue for understanding forest functioning and develop conservation strategies. Methods: We provide the first comprehensive checklist of all native tree taxa (species and subspecies) present in the Mediterranean-European region (from Portugal to Cyprus). We identified some cases of woody species difficult to categorize as trees that we further called "cryptic trees". We collected the occurrences of tree taxa by"administrative regions", i.e. country or large island, and by biogeographical provinces. We studied the species-area relationship, and evaluated the conservation issues for threatened taxa following IUCN criteria. Results: We identified 245 tree taxa that included 210 species and 35 subspecies, belonging to 33 families and 64 genera. It included 46 endemic tree taxa (30 species and 16 subspecies), mainly distributed within a single biogeographical unit. The countries with the highest tree richness are Greece (146 taxa), Italy (133), Albania (122), Spain (155), Macedonia (116), and Croatia (110). The species-area relationship clearly discriminated the richest central-eastern (Balkans) and northern (Alpine and Cevenno-Pyrenean) biogeographical provinces, against the five western provinces in the Iberian Peninsula. We identified 44 unrecognized "cryptic trees", representing 21% of the total trees. Among the 245 taxa identified, 19 are considered to be threatened (15 CR+EN+VU) or near threatened (4 NT) by IUCN. 本文利用中国台站冰雹直径记录及美国的冰雹报告,结合热带降水观测卫星（TRMM）和全球降水观测计划的核心卫星（GPM）,讨论了中美两地冰雹云的卫星观测特征,建立了卫星降水雷达观测强冰雹云的判定标准,并应用该标准讨论了强冰雹云系统的全球分布。Liu et al.（2008）利用TRMM观测建立了全球降水特征（pf）数据库。pf包含独立的降水系统的各项特征数据。中美两国的冰雹报告首先与pf数据进行匹配,定义离冰雹报告时间和位置为1个小时和1度的pf为Hail pf,而未与冰雹报告匹配的定义为No-hail pf。由于中美两国收集冰雹报告方式以及气候背景的不同,两国的Hail pf对应的冰雹直径差异较大,中国的Hail pf对应的直径多数少于5mm,美国的观测则多为19mm以上的大冰雹。同时由于海拔对冰雹系统的影响,研究中对根据pf的海拔分别对高海拔（＞2000m）和低海拔（＜2000m）进行了讨论。结果显示中国地区的Hail pf的强度弱于美国,表现在有弱的微波亮温,更低的最大雷达回波及闪电频率。在高海拔地区的冰雹云系统在强度上也弱于底海拔地区。从雷达回波的廓线上,不同直径范围的Hail pf的垂直雷达回波呈现渐变过程。随着Hail pf的冰雹直径的增加,对流底层的雷达回波差别较小,但中层的雷达回波（尤其在6 km以上）则逐渐增大,这一特征在两国不同直径的Hail pf的廓线中均存在。在此基础上,我们研究讨论了星载降水雷达在全球冰雹云观测中的应用,并与前人使用的微波亮温的讨论结果进行了比较。结果表明当取44 d BZ雷达回波高度的温度为–22°C时（d BZ method）,具有最优的CSI和HSS评分;对37 GHz波段的极化亮温（PCT）取230K时（PCT method）,具有微波亮温判据的最优CSI和HSS评分。这两种方法的在全球均显示出了与全球强对流分布相符合的分布中心,而PCT method则高估了在热带地区的Hail pf的频次。通过讨论不同地区的37GHz的极化亮温低于230K的对流系统的雷达回波的廓线发现,在热带地区的Hail pf能够达到更高的海拔高度,但在对流层中层有相对较弱的雷达回波高度。热带地区位于高层的大量冰粒子造成了相对副热带地区更弱的微波亮温,而弱的中层雷达回波则导致大的冰雹的生成较少。
