This study systematically evaluates the TCGA whole-transcriptome sequencing data of hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） by comparing the global gene expression profiles between tumors and their corresponding non- tumorous liver tissue. Based on the differential gene expression analysis, we identified a number of novel dysregulated genes, in addition to those previously reported. Top-listing upregulated （CENPF and FOXM1） and downregulated （CLEC4G, CRHBP, and CLEC1B） genes were successfully validated using qPCR on our cohort of 65 pairs of human HCCs. Further examination for the mechanistic overview by subjecting significantly upregulated and downregulated genes to gene set enrichment analysis showed that different cellular pathways were involved. This study provides useful information on the transcriptomic landscape and molecular mechanism of hepatocarcinogenesis for development of new biomarkers and further in-depth characterization.

Background The hong Kong Special Administrative Region （HKSAR） of the People＇s Republic of China （PRC） has seen significant changes in its trauma service over the last ten years including the implementation of a regional trauma system. The author＇s institution is one of the five trauma centres designated in 2003. This article reports our initial clinical experience. Methods A prospective single-centre trauma registry from January 2004 to December 2008 was reviewed. The primary clinical outcome measure was hospital mortality. The Trauma and Injury Severity Score （TRISS） methodology was used for bench-marking with the North America Major Trauma Outcome Study （MTOS） database. Results There were 1451 patients. The majority （83.9%） suffered from blunt injury. The overall mortality rate was 7.8%. Severe injury, defined as the Injury Severity Score 〉15, occurred in 22.5% of patients, and was associated with a mortality rate of 31.6%. A trend of progressive improvement was noted. The M-statistic was 0.99, indicating comparable case-mix with the MTOS. The Z- and W-statistics of each individual year revealed fewer, but not significantly so, number of survivors than expected. Conclusions Trauma centre designation was feasible in the HKSAR and was associated with a gradual improvement in patient care. Trauma system implementation may be considered in regions equipped with the necessary socio-economic and organizational set-up.

In this study, the minimum observability of Boolean networks(BNs) is investigated by using the semi-tensor product(STP) of matrices. First, a new system based on the considered BN is obtained to analyze states pair dynamic trajectories, from which a necessary and sufficient condition for the observability of BNs is determined. Second, adding a new observer improves the observability without affecting the observable states. Thus, an algorithm is presented to design an observer for an unobservable BN. In addition, a necessary condition is obtained to determine the minimum number of nodes required to be directly measurable. Further,an algorithm to address the minimal observability is presented. Finally, examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

BACKGROUND Upper gastrointestinal fishbone microperforations are rare and not commonly reported in medical *** the increasing use of computer tomography(CT)imaging and the employment of the Alvardo criteria,misdiagnosis of acute appendicitis can still *** report the rare case of an elderly Chinese gentleman who had a fish-bone induced microperforation of the duodenum that closely mimicked the symptoms of acute *** SUMMARY This 79-year-old man presented with migratory lower abdominal pain that localized at his periumbilical region and right lower *** had associated pyrexia,general malaise and was noted to have an elevated white cell *** investigations initially revealed a distended appendix which was resected laparoscopically but showed no obvious signs of gross *** patient then deteriorated clinically and had increased oxygen requirements immediately after the *** prompted further investigations.A further review of his CT scan revealed a fine fishbone microperforation in the distal duodenum associated with retroperitoneal abscess formation and seepage extending into the right lower *** was then started on broad spectrum intravenous antibiotics and subsequently underwent a laparotomy 12 h later to manage the obscure aetiology and to drain the *** post-operative course was uneventful and he was discharged 11 d later including a 2-d stay in the intensive care *** This case offers an insight into a potential mimic of acute appendicitis and the diagnostic difficulties experienced in such presentations.

Mitigation of urban air pollution has been constrained by the availability of urban spaces for *** walls offer the prospect of greening spaces and surfaces without requiring large *** walls can largely be divided into green facades where the aboveground parts of plants rooted in soil and pots grow directly on,and living walls holding bags,planter tiles,trays and vessels containing substrates in which plants are *** facades and living walls can be continuous or modular with repeating units that can be assembled for *** review aims to present the effectiveness of green walls in removing different types of air pollutants in indoor and outdoor *** examined more than 45 peer-reviewed recently published scholarly articles to achieve the *** highlights that most of the studies on green walls focus on particulate matter removal and green walls could effectively remove particulate matter though the effectiveness varies with plant types,air humidity,rainfall and its intensity,leaf area index and contact angle,green wall surface coverage ratio,as well as the height of green *** the height of green walls and optimizing their distance from roadsides could promote the deposition of particulate *** off could regenerate plant surfaces for capturing *** walls are also effective in removing NO2,O3,SO2 and *** active living walls,when properly designed,could have air purifying performance comparable to a HVAC *** performance of green walls could be optimized through polycultures,selection of plants,surface coverage and height,and air inflow.

In this paper, Grain-like cascade feedback shift registers(FSRs) are regarded as two Boolean networks(BNs), and the semi-tensor product(STP) of the matrices is used to convert the Grain-like cascade FSRs into an equivalent linear equation. Based on the STP, a novel method is proposed herein to investigate the nonsingularity of Grain-like cascade FSRs. First, we investigate the property of the state transition matrix of Grain-like cascade FSRs. We then propose their sufficient and necessary nonsingularity condition. Next,we regard the Grain-like cascade FSRs as Boolean control networks(BCNs) and further provide a sufficient condition of their nonsingularity. Finally, two examples are provided to illustrate the results obtained in this paper.

Due to the large degree of freedom in terms of design and installation, flexible ventilation ducts are commonly used in ventilation systems. however, excessive use of flexible ducts may lead to greater pressure drop and higher energy consumption. This study conducted experimental measurements to characterize the pressure drop in flexible ventilation ducts with different compression ratios and bending angles. This investigation first measured the pressure drop in straight flexible ducts with four compression ratios under various airflow rates. The calculated friction factor for the straight flexible ducts was negatively associated with the compression ratio. Next, the pressure drops in single-bend flexible ducts with various bending angles from 30° to 150° were measured under various airflow rates. The calculated loss coefficient of the bend increased with the bending angle for single-bend flexible ducts. Finally, the influence of the intermediate duct length on the pressure drop across two bends was experimentally investigated. When the length of the intermediate duct was greater than eight times the inner diameter, the pressure drop across a double-bend flexible duct could be calculated from the friction factors and loss coefficients with a relative error less than 1%. The data obtained in this study can be used to calculate the total pressure loss in flexible ventilation ducting systems in buildings.

AIM:To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of colorectal cancer(CRC)in patients under 50 years of age across two ***:Records of patients under age 50 years of age who had CRC surgery over a 16 year period were assessed at two *** following documents where reviewed:admission notes,operative notes,and discharge *** main study variables included:age,presenting symptoms,family history,tumor location,operation,stage/differentiation of disease,and post operative *** of disease was classified according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging system:tumor depth;node status;and ***:CRC was found in 180 patients under age50 years(87 females,93 males;mean age 41.4±6.2years).Young patients accounted for 11.2%of cases during a 6 year period for which the full data set *** percent had a 1stdegree and 12%a 2nd degree family CRC *** all patients(94%)were symptomatic at diagnosis;common symptoms included:bleeding(59%),obstruction(9%),and abdominal/rectal pain(35%).Evaluation was often delayed and bleeding frequently attributed to *** stage CRC(Stage 3 or 4)was noted in 53%of *** tumors were distal to the splenic flexure(77%)and 39%involved the *** patients(95%)had segmental resections;6 patients had subtotal/total *** differentiated tumors were noted in 12%and mucinous lesions in 19%of patients of which most had Stage 3 or 4 ***-two patients(13%)developed recurrence and/or progression of disease to *** patients(ages 42,42and 49 years)went on to develop metachronous primary colon cancers within 3 to 4 years of their initial ***:CRC was common in young patients with no family *** patients with symptoms merit a timely evaluation to avoid presentation with late stage CRC.
