Impact of the non-indigenous shrub species spartium junceum (Fabaceae) on native vegetation in central spain

Aims The introduction of potentially invasive species through ornamental cultivation or for rehabilitation purposes is a serious environmental problem.They cause damage to biodiversity through loss,increased mortality or‘in situ’selection phenomena in natural flora.spartium junceum is a Mediterranean shrub that is not native in most areas of the Iberian Peninsula,although it is extensively grown for the rehabilitation of roadsides.We have investigated the effect on the native vegetation of an old s.junceum(Fabaceae)plantation in a conservation area in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula:the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares nature reserve in Madrid.Methods We compared s.junceum stands with the native nanophanerophytic Cistus ladanifer community at different ecosystem properties:soil properties,temporal soil seed bank contents,standing vegetation and net primary production of annual grasslands growing in these shrublands.Important Findings The results highlighted s.junceum’s ability to become established in the new environment(marginal areas of the nature reserve)and ensure its successful growth.This is more apparent in northern and eastern exposures where this formation contacts with the core of the best conserved native vegetation in the nature reserve.soils under spartium showed a higher nitrogen content,indicating its capacity-in common with other legumes-to fix N,and conferring an advantage over Cistus,which is N-limited.Other soil nutrients such as phosphorus,magnesium and calcium and water availability are also higher in spartium soils than in Cistus.Phosphorus is usually a constraint for N-fixers,but in our study,it is the most significant soil variable in both shrub formations and is important to the success of spartium.Water availability is a key factor for Mediterranean vegetation,and particularly in autumn when soils are recharged.The spartium formation is able to retain water as its growth produces a closer canopy than Cistus,thereby preventing water evaporation and contributing to the success of this specie

Primary malignant melanoma of the biliary tract: A case report and literature review

BACKGROUND Primary malignant melanoma of the biliary tract (MBT) is a rare condition whose diagnosis requires excluding a primary origin in another location.This paper reviews the most important characteristics of MBT cases published in the literature and reports a new case.The patient reported here is the first case of primary malignant melanoma of the biliary tract with pulmonary metastasis treated with immunotherapy.This patient remains disease-free 36 mo after the treatment of metastatic lung lesions.CAsE sUMMARY A 51-year-old man was admitted to the gastrointestinal department to study obstructive jaundice of a 1 wk clinical course.Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed dilatation of the intrahepatic biliary tract and stenosis of the common hepatic duct.Given the suspicion of biliary tract neoplasia,cholecystectomy and resection of the common hepatic duct were performed with hepatic jejunostomy free of complications.Anatomo-pathological diagnosis was melanoma.After intervention,the patient was referred to the Department of Medical Oncology,where a primary origin was excluded in the skin,mucosa,and eyes.This confirmed diagnosis of primary biliary tract melanoma.Computed tomography was performed 12 mo after the procedure revealed several subcentimetric lung nodules.Wedge resection was performed.After confirming the diagnosis of pulmonary metastasis of primary melanoma of the biliary tract,the patient was started on immunotherapy with nivolumab.Tolerance to treatment was excellent.The patient remains disease-free 36 mo after the treatment of metastatic lung lesions.CONCLUsION The patient reported here is the first case of primary malignant melanoma of the biliary tract with lung metastases successfully treated with immunotherapy.

BTZ Quasinormal Frequencies as Poles of Green’s Function

Based on the well known fact that the quasinormal frequencies are the poles of the frequency domain Green’s function we describe a method that allows us to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon field moving in the three-dimensional rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. These quasinormal frequencies are already published and widely explored in several applications, but we use this example to expound the proposed method of computation. We think that the described procedure can be useful to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of classical fields propagating in other backgrounds. Furthermore, we compare with previous results and discuss some related facts.

Profile of Patients with stroke and Disorders of the Vocal Tract

Background: The present work aims to characterize the profile of patients with stroke treat at a hospital located in the Region of the mata of Minas Gerais, Brazil, considering the findings of the clinical vocal tract, kind of stroke, age and gender of such patients. Methodology: To obtain data, the clinical profile of 133 patients with a clinical or tomography diagnosis of stroke was analyzed, and the results were presented in percentage. For quantitative data average and analysis the tests were done with associations that held χ2 test, and for significance it was considered p Results: From the total of patients, 63 were women, accounting for 47.4% and the other 52.6% were males. Clinically, they were characterized with the highest percentage for ischemic stroke (89.4%) compared to the hemorrhagic type (10.6%). Most of them were referred for computed tomography (86.5%) and remained hospitalized for an average of 6.496 ± 7.372 days. similar percentages were obtained in the analysis of the population in question, when considering if they had (54.1%) or not (49.6%) any damage in their speech, language skills or swallowing. There were different types of disabilities in patients with stroke. Men with an average age of 69.8 ± 13.9 presents mostly ischemic stroke, and the majority of patients with stroke had hemiplegia and abnormalities of the vocal tract, dysphasia, and aphasia. While older patients had an ischemic stroke and were presented with left hemiplegia, the younger ones suffered from hemorrhagic strokes that caused a disability characterized as right hemiplegic. Conclusion: Our results show important conclusions regarding the clinical evolution of the vocal tract of patients who suffered strokes during the period of the analysis, being useful for better comprehension of how the vocal tract from these patients evolved according to the kind of stroke, sex and age also allowing a contraposition with other future statistics periods available in literature.
