AIM：To assess the proportion of refractive errors in the Mexican population that visited primary care optometry clinics in fourteen states of Mexico. METHODS：Refractive data from 676 856 patients aged 6 to 90 y were collected from optometry clinics in fourteen states of Mexico between 2014 and 2015. The refractive errors were classified by the spherical equivalent（SE）, as follows：sphere＋？ cylinder. Myopia（SE〉-0.50 D）, hyperopia（SE〉＋0.50 D）, emmetropia（-0.50≤SE≤＋0.50）, and astigmatism alone（cylinder≥-0.25 D）. A negative cylinder was selected as a ***：The proportion（95% confidence interval） among all of the subjects was hyperopia 21.0%（20.9-21.0）, emmetropia 40.7%（40.5-40.8）, myopia 24.8%（24.7-24.9） and astigmatism alone 13.5%（13.4-13.5）. Myopia was the most common refractive error and frequency seemed to increase among the young population（10 to 29 years old）, however, hyperopia increased among the aging population（40 to 79 years old）, and astigmatism alone showed a decreasing trend with age（6 to 90y; from 19.7% to 10.8%）. There was a relationship between age and all refractive errors（approximately 60%, aged 50 and older）. The proportion of any clinically important refractive error was higher in males（61.2%） than in females（58.3%; P〈0.0001）. From fourteen states that collected information, the proportion of refractive error showed variability in different geographical areas of ***：Myopia is the most common refractive error in the population studied. This study provides the first data on refractive error in Mexico. Further programs and studies must be developed to address the refractive errors needs of the Mexican population.

Terahertz Modulation of Hexagonal-Shaped Metamaterials Employing ZnO Quantum Dots

The utilization of UV excitation to verify the terahertz (THz) wave modulation of hexagonal-shaped metamaterial (MM) arrays coated with synthesized photoluminescent, down-shifting ZnO quantum dots (QDs) of two different radius sizes, namely, 3.00 nm (pH 10) and 2.12 nm (pH 12), respectively is reported. In order to characterize the behavior of the MM before and after deployment of the ZnO QDs, THz time domain spectroscopy in transmission mode was employed. Upon exposure to UV excitation, the collected amplitude modulation values were 9.21% for the pH 12 and 4.55% for the pH 10 ZnO QDs, respectively. It is anticipated that the ability to actively tune the performance of otherwise passive structures will promote the proliferation of THz signal modulation devices in the near future.

Metabolic syndrome as a risk factor for gallstone disease

AIM: To establish an association between the presence of metabolic syndrome and the development of gallstone disease. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study in a check-up unit in a university hospital in Mexico City. We enrolled 245 subjects, comprising 65 subjects with gallstones (36 women, 29 men) and 180 controls (79 women and 101 men without gallstones). Body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, plasma insulin, and serum lipids and lipoproteins levels were measured. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment. Unconditional logistic regression analysis (univariate and multivariate) was used to calculate the risk of gallstone disease associated with the presence of at least three of the criteria (Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ). Analyses were adjusted for age and sex. RESULTS: Among 245 subjects, metabolic syndrome was present in 40% of gallstone disease subjects, compared with 17.2% of the controls, adjusted by age and gender (odds ratio (OR) = 2.79; 95%CI, 1.46-5.33; P= 0.002), a dose-dependent effect was observed with each component of metabolic syndrome (OR=2.36, 95%CI, 0.72-7.71; P= 0.16 with one component and OR = 5.54, 95%CI, 1.35-22.74; P = 0.02 with four components of metabolic syndrome). Homeostasis model assessment was significantly associated with gallstone disease (adjusted OR = 2.25; 95%CI, 1.08-4.69; P= 0.03). CONCLUSION: We conclude that as for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, gallstone disease appears to be strongly associated with metabolic syndrome.

Dengue is one of the most prominent tropical epidemic diseases present in the Rio de Janeiro city and Southeast part of Brazil, due to the widespread conditions of occurrence of the dengue vector, the mosquito Aedesaegypti, such as high-temperature days interlaced with afternoon or nocturnal rainstorms in summer. This work has the objective of investigating the relationships between variabilities of the El Ni?o-South Oscillation (ENSO) and greater epidemics of dengue in Rio de Janeiro city. To accomplish this goal, the analysis and signal decomposition by cross-wavelet transform (WT) was applied to obtain the cross variability associated with variations of power and phase of both signals by characteristic periods and along with the time series. Data considered in the analysis are (the decimal logarithm of normalized value) of the monthly available notifications of dengue worsening, provided by the public health system of Brazil, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) Ni?o 3.4 data, provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in the period 2000-2017. A maximum cross-wavelet power close to 0.45 was obtained for the representative period of 1 year and also to periods between 3 and 4 years, associated with the positive phase of the SOI index (i.e. , La Ni?a) or with a transition to the positive phase. The evolution of the combined variability of SOI and dengue can be expressed by progressive differences in phase along the time, eventually resulting in yielding phases (i.e., La Niña-Dengue epidemic).

White Mulberry （Morus alba） Foliage as a Feeding Supplement for Growing Calves

The aim of this study was to evaluate the feed consumption and weight gain in calves fed with a nutritional block made of white mulberry （Morus alba） for a 90-day-period, involving dry season months （March-May） in Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. A total of 45 growing Zebu x Swiss calves with an average weight of 200 kg were assigned randomly in three groups of 15 animals, and the following treatments of nutritional block were offered to each group： grazing animals （To）, grazing animals plus nutritious block with white mulberry （T1）, and grazing animals plus nutritious block without white mulberry （T2）. A consumption of 0.545 kg/d from block in treatment T1 was observed, significantly improving calves growing and showing a weight gain of 0.933 kg/d. Use of white mulberry in nutritional blocks is a good alternative for growing calves, as a feeding strategy given the seasonality of pasture production in the tropics.

Anthropometric Analysis of the Upper Eyelid and Eyebrow in Patients Attended by the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service of the Hospital Central Sur De Petróleos Mexicanos

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed surgeries by plastic surgeons worldwide. A prospective observational study was conducted to describe the anthropometric measurements of the upper eyelid and eyebrow in a Mexican population. The researcher measured the anthropometry of the eyelids and eyebrows to establish the diagnosis and surgical plan according to the checklist created and applied by the plastic and reconstructive surgery service. In anatomical position with a caliper instrument, the marginal reflex distance (MRD1), the tarsal thickness, the length of the vertical and horizontal slit, and finally the distance at which the external canthus is located with respect to the internal canthus were measured in millimeters. For the anthropometry of the eyebrows, the distance from the eyebrows to the hairline, the position in millimeters of the orbital rim with respect to the eyebrow, and the angle of its apex were measured. A sample of 210 patients was obtained, of which 65 were male and 145 females, divided by age groups. It was observed that in the three age groups, females presented a vertical palpebral fissure with a higher mean than males. Similar is the case of tarsal thickness, in which the difference was significantly greater in the female of the three age groups. On the other hand, it was observed that the horizontal slit in males was higher than that of females, while the MDR1 was similar in both sexes. Finally, it was identified that in the group of 41 to 50 years old significant decreases are observed both in the vertical cleft, tarsal thickness and the position of the external canthus compared to the group of 20 to 30 years old, this is due to the aging process. When evaluating the anthropometrics of the eyebrows, a greater distance from the trichion to the eyebrow was observed in males than in females, in contrast to the position of the eyebrow with respect to the supraorbital rim and its apex, in which it was shown that in f
