Heterosis effect for larval performance of fall armyworm interstrain hybrids

Spodoptera frugiperda,also known as fall armyworm(FAW),is an invasive crop pest that can feed on a variety of host plants,posing a serious threat to food *** are two sympatric strains of FAW that are morphologically identical but described with different food preferences:the“rice strain”(SfR)and the“corn strain”(SfC).A few genetic loci exist to identify these two *** and Z-chromosome-linked haplotypes are the most used,but the biggest part of the genome displays little polymorphism between strains that could explain their adaptation to different *** have previously observed consistent transcription differences between the strains in both laboratory and natural ***,we wonder if there are effects from host-strain-associated loci,maternally or paternally inherited,on FAW performance that could explain the divergence between the two FAW *** test this hypothesis,we first produced two F1 hybrid generations(SfR♀×SfC♂,SfC♀×SfR♂).These reciprocal hybrids should be heterozygous for all chromosomes except for the maternally inherited mitochondrial and sexual W *** evaluate whether plant preference is determined by these genetic loci,we cultivated the two hybrids and the two parental strains in triplicate on an artificial diet and recorded several phenotypic traits such as weight over time,survival rate,emerging rate,developmental time,and sex ***,the same performance experiment was carried out on corn ***,on the artificial diet,the two hybrid genotypes were both more performant than the two parental strains in terms of survival rate,pupal emerging rate,and developmental time,whereas they were intermediate to the inbred parental strains in pupal *** the corn plant diet,both hybrid genotypes outperformed the two parental strains in larval *** these asymmetrical results revealed that mitochondrial or sex-linked haplotypes alone cannot explain the performance differences

Design and Development of a Parabolic Trough Solar Air Heater for a greenhouse Dryer

Design and Development of a Parabolic Trough Solar Air Heater (PTSAH) for a greenhouse Dryer (GD) was done to improve the dryer’s performance. The materials used for the fabrication of the PTSAH included galvanized sheets covered with aluminium foil, an absorber tube made of GI pipe painted matt black to increase heat absorbance at the focal line, mild steel square tubes, shutter plywood, and an axial fan to push air through the absorber tube. Key geometrical parameters used for the design of the PTSAH were a rim angle of 98 degrees, focal length of 0.2608 m, height of 0.3451 m, length of 2 m, and an aperture width of 1.2 m. The PTSAH’s total aperture surface area was 2.4 m2, while its absorber tube surface area was 0.1587 m2. The PTSAH was experimentally tested to establish its thermal performance. It was found that the ambient air recorded an average value of 31.1˚C and that the air heater could increase the air temperature by 45.6˚C above ambient with a thermal efficiency of 5.3%. It can, therefore, be concluded that the PTSAH can significantly improve the performance of a GD by supplying the GD with air at a higher temperature than ambient.

This paper investigates the optimal conditions for methanisation applied to cow dung. Four experimental 25 liters digesters were used in this work. The best biogas yield is obtained when the digester is installed in a metal box and exposed to sunlight. The temperature in this digester varied between 25˚C and 37˚C. The dry matter content of the collected cow dung was 15.5%. The digester was fed with 9 kg of cow dung mixed with 8.5 litres of water, one litre of cassava effluent and 200 ml of human urine. After a retention period of 22 days, the biogas obtained was 67% methane and 21% carbon dioxide. The use of human urine and cassava effluent improved the quality of the biogas.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus is an ongoing global health *** cases of COVID-19 and the rare cases of COVID-19 vaccine-induced-thrombotic-thrombocytopenia(VITT)are both associated with thrombosis and thrombocytopenia;however,the underlying mechanisms remain inadequately *** infection and vaccination utilize the spike protein receptor-binding domain(RBD)of *** found that intravenous injection of recombinant RBD caused significant platelet clearance in *** investigation revealed the RBD could bind platelets,cause platelet activation,and potentiate platelet aggregation,which was exacerbated in the Delta and Kappa *** RBD–platelet interaction was partially dependent on theβ3 integrin as binding was significantly reduced inβ3−/−***,RBD binding to human and mouse platelets was significantly reduced with relatedαIIbβ3 antagonists and mutation of the RGD(arginine-glycine-aspartate)integrin binding motif to RGE(arginine-glycine-glutamate).We developed anti-RBD polyclonal and several monoclonal antibodies(mAbs)and identified 4F2 and 4H12 for their potent dual inhibition of RBD-induced platelet activation,aggregation,and clearance in vivo,and SARS-CoV-2 infection and replication in Vero E6 *** data show that the RBD can bind platelets partially thoughαIIbβ3 and induce platelet activation and clearance,which may contribute to thrombosis and thrombocytopenia observed in COVID-19 and *** newly developed mAbs 4F2 and 4H12 have potential not only for diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 virus antigen but also importantly for therapy against COVID-19.

A hardening load transfer function for rock bolts and its calibration using distributed fiber optic sensing

Confinement of rock bolts by the surrounding rock formation has long been recognized as a positive contributor to the pull-out behavior,yet only a few experimental works and analytical models have been reported,most of which are based on the global rock bolt response evaluated in pull-out *** paper presents a laboratory experimental setup aiming to capture the rock formation effect,while using distributed fiber optic sensing to quantify the effect of the confinement and the reinforcement pull-out behavior on a more local *** is shown that the behavior along the sample itself varies,with certain points exhibiting stress drops with crack *** edge effects related to the kinematic freedom of the grout to dilate are also ***,it was found that the mid-level response is quite similar to the average response along the *** ability to characterize the variation of the response along the sample is one of the many advantages high-resolution fiber optic sensing allows in such *** paper also offers a plasticity-based hardening load transfer function,representing a"slice"of the *** paper describes in detail the development of the model and the calibration/determination of its *** suggested model captures well the coupled behavior in which the pull-out process leads to an increase in the confining stress due to dilative behavior.

Regulating dual-use research:Lessons from Israel and the United States

Over the past 20 years,and with greater urgency since the H5N1 papers controversy(2012),dual-use research of concern(DURC)has been extensively debated by the scientific community,regulators,and the public at *** have raised the need to regulate DURC;however,despite the urgency of this issue,to date,only two countries have implemented specific regulations,United States and Israel(notably,China is in the final stages of creating a set of DURC-related regulations).In this paper,I have compared these policies as case studies that may benefit other ***,the present study aimed to critically compare the DURC policies of the US and Israel and determine whether their different approaches provide a rigorous framework for the regulation of DURC.I have shown that in some aspects,they have adopted similar approaches;for example,allowing local committees to play a role in assessing the ***,they differ in certain important aspects;for instance,the US policies have laid out a mechanism through which academic institutions and the government decide jointly on how to address risky studies,while the Israeli law places the authority solely in government *** aim in comparing the policies is twofold;first,to reveal the weaknesses and strengths of each policy,thereby aiding their improvement,and second,to provide those that are considering developing policies in this field an overview of what the current approaches look like,thereby enabling them to articulate their own approach while taking into account the experience gained by the US and Israel.

Toll-like receptor 4 involvement in hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury in mice

BACKGROUND: Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is involved in innate immunity by recognizing endotoxin resulting in a burst of inflammatory cascade. We investigated the relation between activation of TLR4 and liver injury in partial hepa- tic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in mice. METHODS: TLR4-deficient mice ( C3H/Hej) and wild type mice (WT, C3H/Heouj) were used in the model of I/R injury. Partial hepatic ischemia was produced by oc- clusion of inflow to the median and left lobes for 45 mi- nutes. Blood was drawn at 1 and 3 hours after reperfusion. The blood was analyzed for aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). TNF-α mRNA expression and myeloperoxidase (MPO) level in the ischemic lobes were examined by northern blot and myeloperoxidase assay respectively. RESULTS: AST levels were significantly decreased in TLR4- deficient mice compared with WT mice at both time points (WT: 1215.5 ±174. 03, 2958. 17 ± 186. 81 IU/L at 1 and 3 hours respectively vs TLR4def: 661.83±106.09, 1145.17± 132.43 IU/L at 1 and 3 hours, mean ± SD, 6 mice/group, (=-6.65 and -5.57, P <0.001). Consistent with the role of TNF-α in hepatic I/R, serum TNF-α was decreased in TLR4 deficient mice at 3 hours after reperfusion compared with WT (152.39±43.3 vs 249.12 ± 51.89, n=6, t=-3.13, P<0.05). MPO level in the ischemic lobes in TLR4 defi- cient mice at 3 hours after reperfusion was significantly low- er than that in WT mice (0.059±0.004 vs 0.173±0.025, n=6, F=33.49, P<0.001). This difference appears to be mediated at the gene level since TLR4 deficient mice had decreased TNF-α mRNA expression at 1 hour after reperfu- sion compared with WT mice (80.3±28.8 vs 189.4±24.6, t=-3.25, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with WT mice, TLR4-defi- cient mice appear to have a mild I/R injury. Regulation of TNF-a at mRNA level seems to have a critical effect. These suggest TLR4 be involved in the mechanism of he-patic I/R injury in mice.

Characterization of Glycerol-Extractable Organic Matter from Etna Soils of Different Ages

We characterized humic acids （HAs） and glycerol-extractable organic fractions （GEOFs） extracted from four Andisols, taken from comparable soil-climate conditions on the east side of Mount Etna. The soils were formed on old lava （about 9000 years ago）, old tephra （about 8 700 years ago）, recent lava （about 2 600 years ago） and recent tephra （about 3600 years ago）. A part of the organic matter of the soils, deprived of HAs and fulvic acids （FAs）, was isolated by glycerol extraction. The GEOF can not be extracted with alkaline solutions, probably because it is closely bound to the mineral component of the soil. The characterization of the extracted organic fraction was carried out using elementary and functional group analysis and Fourier transform infrared （FT-IR） spectroscopy. About 20 extractions were necessary to extract the HA and FA from the older soils and about 10 extractions to extract them from the younger soils. Data showed that the CEOFs had a greater ash content and a smaller N content, as well as a greater presence of aliphatic compounds and carboxylic groups as compared to the HA extracted from the same soil. The GEOFs extracted from younger soils also had a lower yield, ash and COOH-group content, and were more aliphatic than the GEOF extracted from older soils. Finally, the GEOFs were more closely bound to the amorphous component of the soil （＇short-range＇ minerals） and consequently less subject to biodegradation.

Foragers use several senses to locate food,and many animals rely on vision and *** is beneficial not to rely on a single sense,which might fail under certain *** examined the contribution of vision and smell to foraging and maze exploration under laboratory conditions using Cataglyphis desert ants as a *** intensity,measured as the number of workers entering the maze and arriving at the target as well as target arrival time,were greater when food,blue light,or both were offered or presented in contrast to a *** trained to forage for a combined food and light cue elevated their foraging intensity with ***,foraging intensity was not higher when using both cues simultaneously than in either one of the two *** training,we split between the two cues and moved either the food or the blue light to the opposite maze *** manipulation impaired foraging success by either leading to fewer workers arriving at the target cell(when the light stayed and the food was moved)or to more workers arriving at the opposite target cell,empty of food(when the food stayed and the light was moved).This result indicates that ant workers use both senses when foraging for food and readily associate light with food.
