Influence of baffle position on liquid sloshing during braking and turning of a tank truck

The influence of baffle position on liquid sloshing during the braking and turning of a tank truck was studied using a volume of fluid (VOF) model. The forces,their positions and weight distribution during braking and the forces and rolling moment during turning were calculated. The reliability of the calculation method was validated by comparisons with experimental results. The results showed that during braking,liquid splashes in the tank and the maximum forces and G (the ratio of weight acting on the front axle to the rear axle) are large when A (the ratio of the arch area above the baffle to the area of cross section)≤0.1. When A≥0.2,as the position of the baffle is lowered,the maximum of Fx (the force in direction x) first decreases then increases,and the maximum of Fy (the force in direction y) and G increase. During turning,liquid splashes in the tank and the maximum forces and M (the rolling moment) are large when D (the ratio of the arch area above the baffle to the area of cross section)≤0.2. When D≥0.3,as the position of the baffle is lowered,the maximums of Fy,Fz (the force in direction z) and M increase.

Hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） is one of the most common and deadly malignancies worldwide. To date, the survival of patients with HCC has not improved because of the insensitivity of HCC to conventional treatments. Sonodynamic therapy （SDT） is a promising new approach that shows remarkable potential in the treatment of HCC. Here, we designed a simple, biocompatible, and multifunctional nanosystem that combines SDT and chemotherapy to treat HCC. This nanosystem, called HPDF nanoparticles, had a core-shell structure in which hematoporphyrin （HP） was complexed with doxorubicin （DOX） to form the hydrophobic core and the surface was coated with Pluronic F68 to form the hydrophilic shell. In HCC cells, HPDF nanoparticles in combination with ultrasonic irradiation （1.0 MHz, 1.5 W/cm2, 30 s） exhibited potent cytotoxicity, resulting from the synergistic effects of a large amount of reactive oxygen species generated from HP and DOX-induced DNA damage. Notabl~ HPDF nanoparticles in combination with ultrasonic irradiation significantly reversed drug resistance in Nanog-positive cancer stem cells （CSCs） in HCC. In nude mice bearing HCC tumors, HPDF nanoparticles efficiently accumulated in the tumors and reached the maximum levels within 6-8 h, post intravenous injection. HPDF nanoparticles, in combination with ultrasonic irradiation （1.0 MHz, 3 W/cm2, 5 min）, suppressed tumor growth, angiogenesis, and collagen deposition, considerably. In summary, our results show that HPDF nanoparticles can effectively combine SDT and chemotherapy to inhibit HCC growth and progression through multiple mechanisms in both cellular and animal models.

The nonlocal peridynamic theory has been proven to be a promising method for the material failure and damage analyses in solid mechanics. Based upon the integro- differential equations, peridynamics enables predicting the complex fracture phenomena such as spontaneous crack nucleation and crack branching, curving, and arrest. In this paper, the bond-based peridynamic approach is used to study the impact damage in a beam with an offset notch, which is widely used to investigate the mixed I-II crack propagation in brittle materials. The predictions from the peridynamic analysis agree well with available experimental observations. The numerical results show that the dynamic fracture behaviors of the beam under the impact load, such as crack initiation, curving, and branching, rely on the location of the offset notch and the impact speed of the drop hammer.

The membrane lipids from fast-elongating wild-type cotton （Gossypium hirsutum） fibers at 10 days post- anthesis, wild-type ovules with fiber cells removed, and ovules from the fuzzless-lintless mutant harvested at the same age, were extracted, separated, and quantified. Fiber cells contained significantly higher amounts of phosphatidylinositol （PI） than both ovule samples with PI 34：3 being the most predominant spe- cies. The genes encoding fatty acid desaturases （415GhFAD）, PI synthase （PIS） and PI kinase （PIK） were expressed in a fiber-preferential manner. Further analysis of phosphatidylinositol monophosphate （PIP） indicated that elongating fibers contained four- to five-fold higher amounts of PIP 34：3 than the ovules. Exog- enously applied linolenic acid （C18：3）, soybean L-α-PI, and PIPs containing PIP 34：3 promoted significant fiber growth, whereas a liver PI lacking the C18：3 moiety, linoleic acid, and PIP 36：2 were completely ineffec- tive. The growth inhibitory effects of carbenoxolone, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and wortmannin were reverted by C18：3, PI, or PIP, respectively, suggesting that PIP signaling is essential for fiber cell growth. Furthermore, cotton plants expressing virus-induced gene-silencing constructs that specifically suppressed Gh15FAD, GhPIS, or GhPIK expression, resulted in significantly short-fibered phenotypes. Our data provide the basis for in-depth studies on the roles of PI and PIP in mediating cotton fiber growth.

Although organic semiconductors have attracted extensive interest and been utilized to fabricate a variety of optoelectronic devices, their electrical transportation characteristics under high pressure have rarely been investigated. However, the weak intermolecular interaction of organic semiconductors endows them with a pressure-sensitive crystal structure and electrical transportation performance, especially the latter. Herein, a new pressure-sensitive transistor was fabricated from an organic semiconductor 1,1＇-dibutyl-4,4＇-bipyridinium diiodide. It was found that this transistor exhibited increasing resistance as the pressure gradually increased and that it eventually shut off under a pressure of 288 MPa. Such a characteristic makes this organic semiconductor a potential candidate for the use in the fabrication of pressure-sensitive switches and regulators. In addition, these results shed light on the electrical performance of flexible organic optoelectronic devices working under high pressure levels resulted from the bending force.
