Potential utilization of proteins for early detection and diagnosis of various diseases h.s drawn considerable interest in th. development of protein-based detection tech.iques. Metal induced fluorescence enh.ncement offers th. possibility of increasing th. sensitivity of protein detection in clinical applications. We report th. use of tunable plasmonic silver nanostructures for th. fluorescence enh.ncement of a near-infrared （NIR） dye （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enh.n- cement of -2 orders of magnitude is obtained by th. nanoscale control of th. Ag nanostructure dimensions and interparticle distance. Th.se Ag nanostructures also enh.nced fluorescence from a dye with.very h.gh.quantum yield （7.8 fold for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enh.nced excitation and an increased radiative decay rate, leading to an associated enh.ncement of th. quantum efficiency leads to th. large enh.ncement. Th.se results sh.w th. potential of Ag nanostructures as metal induced fluorescence enh.ncement （MIFE） substrates for dyes in th. NIR ＂biological window＂ as well as th. visible region. Ag nanostructured arrays fabricated by colloidal lith.graph. th.s sh.w great potential for NIR dye-based biosensing applications.

BACKGROUNd: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIds) h.ve been reported to induce liver injury. Patterns of th. injury usually range from mild elevations of liver enzymes to sometimes severe fulminant h.patic failure. Likewise, naproxen is a propionic acid derivative NSAId th.t was introduced in 1980 and h.s been available as an over-th.- counter medication since 1994, but h.s rarely been reported to cause liver injury. METh.dS: We treated a 30-year-old woman with.jaundice and intractable pruritus th.t developed sh.rtly after taking naproxen. We reviewed th. medical h.story and liver h.stopath.logy of th. patient as well as all previously publish.d case reports of naproxen-associated liver toxicity in th. English.language literature. RESULTS: Th. liver bioch.mical profile of th. patient revealed a mixed ch.lestasis and h.patitis pattern. Consecutive liver biopsies demonstrated focal lobular inflammation, h.patocyte drop-out, and a progressive loss of th. small interlobular bile ducts (ductopenia). Th. biopsy performed two years after onset of th. disease sh.wed partial recovery of a small number of bile ducts; h.wever, 10 years passed before th. bioch.mical profile returned to near normal. CONCLUSIONS: Naproxen-associated liver toxicity remains a rare entity, but sh.uld be considered in any patient presenting with.ch.lestasis sh.rtly after its use. Liver injury is most commonly seen in a mixed pattern ch.racterized by ch.lestasis and h.patitis. Th. resulting liver damage may take years to resolve.

Tissue engineering is promising to meet th. increasing need for bone regeneration. Nanostructured calcium ph.sph.te （CAP） biomaterials/scaffolds are of special interest as th.y sh.re ch.mical/crystallograph.c similarities to inorganic components of bone. Th.ee applications of nano-CaP are discussed in th.s review： nanostructured calcium ph.sph.te cement （CPC）; nano-CaP composites; and nano-CaP coatings. Th. interactions between stem cells and nano-CaP are h.gh.igh.ed, including cell attach.ent, orientation/ morph.logy, differentiation and in vivo bone regeneration. Several trends can be seen：（i） nano-CaP biomaterials support stem cell attach.ent/proliferation and induce osteogenic differentiation, in some cases even with.ut osteogenic supplements; （ii） th. influence of nano-CaP surface patterns on cell alignment is not prominent due to non-uniform distribution of nano-crystals; （iii） nano-CaP can ach.eve better bone regeneration th.n conventional CaP biomaterials; （iv） combining stem cells with.nano-CaP accelerates bone regeneration, th. effect of wh.ch.can be furth.r enh.nced by growth.factors; and （v） cell microencapsulation in nano-CaP scaffolds is promising for bone tissue engineering. Th.se understandings would h.lp research.rs to furth.r uncover th. underlying mech.nisms and interactions in nano-CaP stem cell constructs in vitro and in vivo, tailor nano-CaP composite construct design and stem cell type selection to enh.nce cell function and bone regeneration, and translate laboratory findings to clinical treatments.

diffuse ch.nges in wh.te matter resulting from cerebral microvascular disease contribute to cognitive impairment （Jokinen et al., 2011）, declines in global functionality （Inzitari et al., 2009）, and even death.（debette and Markus, 2010）. Twenty years ago, estimations of th. clinical incidence of ce- rebral microvascular disease approach.d 11 million per year in th. US alone （Leary and Saver, 2003）. More recent estima- tions suggest th. prevalence of diffuse wh.te matter disease and silent brain infarction approach.s 20% and increases dramatically in th. presence of cardiovascular risk factors （Fanning et al., 2014）.

Functionalising surfaces using polymeric th.n films is an industrially important field. One tech.ique for ach.eving nanoscale, controlled surface functionalization is plasma deposition. Plasma deposition h.s advantages over oth.r surface engineering processes, including th.t it is solvent free, substrate and geometry independent, and th. surface properties of th. film can be designed by judicious ch.ice of precursor and plasma conditions. despite th. utility of th.s meth.d, th. mech.nisms of plasma polymer growth.are generally unknown, and are usually described by ch.mical （i.e., radical） path.ays. In th.s review, we aim to sh.w th.t plasma ph.sics drives th. ch.mistry of th. plasma ph.se, and surface-plasma interactions. For example, we sh.w th.t ionic species can react in th. plasma to form larger ions, and also arrive at surfaces with.energies greater th.n 1000 kJ·mol^-1 （〉10 eV） and th.s facilitate surface reactions th.t h.ve not been taken into account previously. Th.s, improving th.n film deposition processes requires an understanding of both.ph.sical and ch.mical processes in plasma.

Eastern USA to determine th. percentage leaf area consumed by insect *** obtained soil and climate data for each.site,as well as plant functional and defensive traits,including specific leaf area(SLA),leaf carbon:nitrogen(C:N),and trich.me *** Findings Alth.ugh.we found no significant latitudinal trend of leaf consump-tion rate,th.re was strong evidence th.t leaf h.rbivory decreased with.leaf C:N and trich.me density,wh.ch.th.mselves decreased with.soil N,supporting our h.poth.sis th.t th. RAh.applies for intraspecific variation across spatial ***,h.gh.precipitation seasonality and soil nitrogen predicted decreased *** results suggest th.t spatial variation in h.rbivory can be driven by factors oth.r th.n h.rbivore communities and climatic gradients,and th.t bottom-up processes,wh.re plant traits and soil fertility control leaf consumption,must be incorporated into spatial predictions of h.rbivory.

Parasitic isopods(family Bopyridae)and burrowing barnacles(family Trypetesidae)infesting h.rmit crabs were investigated from sh.llow subtidal collections made along th. south.astern coast of Spain in 2009.A total of 713 specimens of Clibanarius eryth.opus(Latreille,1818)and 82 Calcinus tubularis(L.,1767)were *** sh.lls and worm tubes inh.bited by h.rmit crabs were collected by h.nd wh.le snorkeling and were cracked to determine h.st species,size,sex and presence of *** species of bopyrid isopods were found on ***:th. branch.al parasite Bopyrissa fraiseii(Carayon,1943)and th. abdominal parasite Parath.lges cardonae Codreanu and Codreanu in Codreanu,*** all *** examined,Bopyrissa fraiseii was found on 0.6%of h.rmit crabs and *** was found on 0.3%.A redescription of *** is provided and th. species is documented with.ligh. and scanning electron microscopy for th. first *** Calcinus tubularis h.rbored parasitic isopods,but one specimen was parasitized by an unidentified rh.zoceph.lan barnacle of th. genus Septosaccus(1.2%).Th. burrowing barnacle Trypetesa lampas(h.ncock,1849)was found associated with.both.h.rmit crab species and evidence of predation on h.st eggs by th.s barnacle is sh.wn for th. first *** lampas was found in 4.2%of th. sh.lls *** present study expands our knowledge of th. parasite fauna of h.rmit crabs from th. Mediterranean Sea and indicates th.t additional research.is needed to determine th. impact of trypetesid egg predators on h.rmit crab populations.
