Enhanced photocatalytic activity and mechanism of CeO_(2) hollow spheres for tetracycline degradation

Recently, researchers have focused on designing and fabricating highly efficient catalysts for photocatalytic organic pollutant removal. Herein, CeO_(2) hollow spheres were prepared through a simple template method followed by calcination at different temperatures for the tetracycline(TC) degradation under simulated solar light illumination. With a calcination temperature ranging from400 to 800 ℃, the as-prepared CeO_(2) hollow structure annealed at 600 ℃(C_(600)) exhibited the best degradation performance with a degradation rate constant of0.066 min-1, which was about six and five times higher than those of the uncalcined sample(C_(0)) and the sample calcined at 800 ℃(C_(800)), respectively. Moreover, sample C_(600)was also superior to the CeO_(2) solid particle photocatalyst. The characterisation results showed that the improved photocatalytic performance was mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of large specific surface areas, high crystallisation and excellent light scattering ability. Furthermore, the results of active species trapping experiments demonstrated that the superoxide anion(·O_(2)^(-)) radical and hole(h^(+)) played dominant roles in TC degradation. Subsequently, the possible TC degradation pathways and photocatalytic mechanism of CeO_(2) hollow spheres were proposed on the basis of high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, main active species and band edge positions of CeO_(2). The results of this study provide a basis for designing and exploring hollow structure catalysts for energy conversion and environmental remediation.

In this study, a full-color emission red–green–blue(RGB) quantum-dot(QD)-based micro-light-emitting-diode(micro-LED) array with the reduced optical cross-talk effect by a photoresist mold has been demonstrated. The UV micro-LED array is used as an efficient excitation source for the QDs. The aerosol jet technique provides a narrow linewidth on the micrometer scale for a precise jet of QDs on the micro-LEDs. To reduce the optical cross-talk effect,a simple lithography method and photoresist are used to fabricate the mold, which consists of a window for QD jetting and a blocking wall for cross-talk reduction. The cross-talk effect of the well-confined QDs in the window is confirmed by a fluorescence microscope, which shows clear separation between QD pixels. A distributed Bragg reflector is covered on the micro-LED array and the QDs' jetted mold to further increase the reuse of UV *** enhanced light emission of the QDs is 5%, 32%, and 23% for blue, green, and red QDs, respectively.

Development of versatile, chemically tunable photocages for photoactivated chemotherapy（PACT） represents an excellent opportunity to address the technical drawbacks of conventional photodynamic therapy（PDT） whose oxygen-dependent nature renders it inadequate in certain therapy contexts such as hypoxic tumors. As an alternative to PDT, oxygen free mechanisms to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species（ROS） by visible light cleavable photocages are in demand. Here, we report the detailed mechanisms by which the small molecule blebbistatin acts as a one-photon blue light-gated or two-photon nearinfrared light-gated photocage to directly release a hydroxyl radical in the absence of oxygen. By using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, resonance Raman and chemoselective ROS fluorescent probes, we analyze the dynamics and fate of blebbistatin during photolysis under blue light. Water-dependent photochemistry reveals a critical process of water-assisted protonation and excited state intramolecular proton transfer（ESIPT） that drives the formation of short-lived intermediates, which surprisingly culminates in the release of hydroxyl radical but not superoxide or singlet oxygen from blebbistatin. CASPT2//CASSCF calculations confirm that hydrogen bonding between water and blebbistatin underpins this process. We further determine that blue light enables blebbistatin to induce mitochondria-dependent apoptosis, an attribute conducive to PACT development. Our work demonstrates blebbistatin as a controllable photocage for hydroxyl radical generation and provides insight into the potential development of novel PACT agents.
