2D Images of Astrocytes in the Human Principal Olivary Nucleus: Monofractal Analysis of the Morphology

Introduction: Current knowledge postulated glia as active participants in various metabolic processes within nervous tissue. The most numerous glial cells were astrocytes, and qualitative analysis divided them into two types based on their anatomical locations: fibrous and protoplasmic. The main goal of this research was to examine the morphological difference between types, analyzing four features of the image. The secondary objective of this research was to explore their morphology through maturation and aging. Materials and Methods: The material originated from bilateral sections of the human principal olivary nucleus, without disorders in the central nervous system. The brains were taken from 30 human cadavers (35 - 90 years) and cut into samples corresponding to dimensions of the principal olivary nucleus. A light microscope digitized the histological preparations. The selection of 294 images was analyzed by monofractal parameters derived from the box-counting. These parameters quantified four image properties (size, shape, complexity and homogeneity) of the glial body or whole glial cell. Results: The first results showed that images of two types of astrocytes were significantly different (p Conclusions: The main limitation of this study lies in the fact that the quantification was performed only by fractal analysis techniques. Nevertheless, a detailed monofractal analysis of astrocytes was performed for the first time. Thus, although this study can be seen as an improvement of the previous qualitative results, future research will provide the complete procedure of the image analysis.

The surface quality of solid wood is very important for its effective response in manufacturing processes. The effects of feed rate, cutting depth and rake angle on surface roughness and power consumption were investigated and modeled. Neuro-fuzzy methodology was applied and shown that it could be useful, reliable and an effective tool for modeling the surface roughness of ***, the results of the present research can be successfully applied in the wood industry to reduce time, energy and high experimental costs.

The eco-responsible lead-free piezoelectric ceramics have been intensively searched for more than adecade, however, the final goal to replace toxic ceramics like lead zirconate titanate (PZT) with lead-freecompounds, having comparable or even better performance has not yet been reached. In this road, thelead-free ceramics Ba_(0.85)Ca_(0.15)Zr_(0.1)Ti_(0.9)O_(3) (BCZT), possessing excellent dielectric, ferroelectric, andpiezoelectric properties are regarded as serious candidates for the PZT replacement. Besides, nano-structuring BCZT is of paramount importance to enhance these functionalities even more. Here, BCZTmultipodes are designed by template-growth hydrothermal synthesis using hydrogen zirconate titanatenanowires. We demonstrate that the fabricated BCZT multipodes exhibit high dielectric permittivity of5300 with a temperature stability coefficient of ±5.9% between 20 and 140℃. A significant recoveredenergy density of 315.0 mJ/cm^(3) with high thermal stability and high energy storage efficiency of 87.4%,and enhanced large-signal piezoelectric coefficient d^(*)_(33) (310 pm/V) are found. Compared to the tradi-tional BCZT ceramics reported in the literature, relying on high-temperature processing, our sampleexhibits boosted energy storage parameters at a much lower temperature. These outcomes may offer anew strategy to tailor eco-responsible relaxor ferroelectrics toward superior energy storage performancefor ceramic capacitor applications.

Infants with severe cardiorespiratory failure treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation are at risk of hypoxic-ischemic injury and infarction of the brain, intracranial hemorrhage, and seizures. Consequently, this can lead to adverse neurodevelopmental outcome. We present a neonate treated with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation due to diaphragmatic hernia. The infant＇s brain function was continuously monitored with amplitude-integrated electroencephalography. The child experienced clinical seizures and subclinical seizure discharges, detected by amplitudeintegrated electroencephalography, permitting the opportunity to treat them and adjust the anticonvulsive treatment accordingly.

Current practice variations in the management of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in Croatia

AIM: To investigate current preferences and opinions on the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) injury in Croatia. METHODS: The survey was conducted using a questionnaire which was sent by e-mail to all 189 members of the Croatian Orthopaedic and Traumatology Association. Only respondents who had performed at least one ACL reconstruction during 2011 were asked to fill out the questionnaire. RESULTS: Thirty nine surgeons responded to the survey. Nearly all participants(95%) used semitendinosus/gracilis tendon autograft for reconstruction and only 5% used bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft. No other graft type had been used. The accessory anteromedial portal was preferred over the transtibial approach(67% vs 33%). Suspensory fixation was the most common graft fixation method(62%) for the femoral side, followed by the cross-pin(33%) and bioabsorbable interference screw(5%). Almost all respondents(97%) used a bioabsorbable interference screw for tibial side graft fixation. CONCLUSION: The results show that ACL reconstruction surgery in Croatia is in step with the recommendations from latest world literature.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare professionals have a duty to maintain basic life support(BLS) skills. This study aims to evaluate medical students' factual knowledge of BLS and the training they ***: A cross-sectional, closed-response questionnaire was distributed to the fi rst-and fourth-year students studying at institutions in the United Kingdom. The paper questionnaire sought to quantify respondent's previous BLS training, factual knowledge of the BLS algorithm using five multiple choice questions(MCQs), and valuate their desire for further BLS training. Students received 1 point for each correctly identifi ed answer to the 5 MCQ'***: A total of 3,732 complete responses were received from 21 medical schools. Eighty percent(n=2,999) of students completed a BLS course as part of their undergraduate medical studies. There was a signifi cant difference(P<0.001) in the percentage of the fourth-year students selecting the correct answer in all the MCQ's compared to the fi rst-year students except in identifyingthe correct depth of compressions required during CPR(P=0.095). Overall 10.3%(95% CI 9.9% to 10.7%) of respondents correctly identified the answer to 5 MCQ's on BLS: 9% of the first-year students(n=194) and 12% of the fourth-year students(n=190). On an institutional level the proportion of students answering all MCQ's correctly ranged from 2% to 54% at different universities. Eighty-one percent of students(n=3,031) wished for more BLS training in their ***: Factual knowledge of BLS is poor among medical students in the UK. There is a disparity in standards of knowledge across institutions and respondents indicating that they would like more training.
