Fabrication of self-assembling nanofibers with optimal cell uptake and therapeutic delivery efficacy

Effective strategies to fabricate finite organic nanoparticles and understanding their structure-dependent cell interaction is highly important for the development of long circulating nanocarriers in cancer *** this contribution,we will capitalize on our recent development of finite supramolecular nanofibers based on the self-assembly of modularly designed cationic multidomain peptides(MDPs)and use them as a model system to investigate structure-dependent cell penetrating *** selfassembled into nanofibers with high density of cationic charges at the fiber-solvent interface to interact with the cell ***,despite the multivalent charge presentation,not all fibers led to high levels of membrane activity and cellular *** flexibility of the cationic charge domains on self-assembled nanofibers plays a key role in effective membrane *** were found to sacrifice their dimension,thermodynamic and kinetic stability for a more flexible charge domain in order to achieve effective membrane *** increased membrane activity led to improved cell uptake of membrane-impermeable chemotherapeutics through membrane pore *** vitro cytotoxicity study showed co-administering of water-soluble doxorubicin with membrane-active peptide nanofibers dramatically reduced the IC50 by eight folds compared to drug *** these detailed structure and activity studies,the acquired knowledge will provide important guidelines for the design of a variety of supramolecular cell penetrating nanomaterials not limited to peptide assembly which can be used to probe various complex biological processes.

Theoretical analysis of spectral lineshapes from molecular dynamics

Cell death is a fundamental physiological process in all living *** roles extend from embryonic development,organ maintenance,and aging to the coordination of immune responses and *** recent years,our understanding of the mechanisms orchestrating cellular death and its consequences on immunity and homeostasis has increased *** modalities of what has become known as‘programmed cell death’have been described,and some key players in these processes have been *** have learned more about the intricacies that fine tune the activity of common players and ultimately shape the different types of cell *** studies have highlighted the complex mechanisms tipping the balance between different cell ***,we summarize the latest discoveries in the three most well understood modalities of cell death,namely,apoptosis,necroptosis,and pyroptosis,highlighting common and unique pathways and their effect on the surrounding cells and the organism as a whole.

Heat inactivation of monkeypox virus

Different kinds of media spiked with monkeypox virus(MPXV)were subjected to heat inactivation at different temperatures for various periods of *** results showed that MPXV was inactivated in less than 5 min at 70℃and less than 15 min at 60℃,with no difference between viruses from the West African and Central African *** present findings could help laboratory workers to manipulate MPXV in optimal biosafety conditions and improve their protocols.

Thermal characterization of bio-based phase changing materials in decorative wood-based panels for thermal energy storage

Decorative wood panels containing pouches of bio-based phase changing materials(PCMs) were prepared. Three different PCM mixtures were used: a blend of capric and lauric acids as well as two commercial products, Puretemp?20 and Puretemp?23(Puretemp). The panels consist of engraved Medium Density Fiberboard(MDF) filled with a plastic pouch filled with PCM. High density fiberboard(HDF) was used on top of the panels to enclose the PCM pouches. PCM mixtures were first tested by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). Phase change temperature and total heat storage of the panels were measured for both fusion and solidification with a Dynamic Heat-Flow Meter Apparatus(DHFMA). DSC and DHFMA results were compared, allowing a better understanding of results gathered from these two techniques. DSC calibration has been revealed important when assessing PCMs. The panels present a phase change temperature and a latent heat storage suitable for buildings applications. The panel made with Puretemp?23 presented the highest energy, with 57.1 J g^(-1). Thermal cycling was conducted on the panels to investigate thermal reliability, which revealed small modifications of thermal properties for two products. For all cases, latent heat was found stable. Hygro-mechanical behavior of the panels was also evaluated as these where designed to be esthetic decorative panels. This study exposes the potential of a new type of wood-based panels loaded with PCM for thermal energy storage and brings overall knowledge about PCM products thermal characterization.

Advances in functional limb reconstruction in the irradiated setting

The management of extremity soft tissue sarcoma is constantly evolving, and, in recent decades, limb salvage has been the main goal. More commonly, this is being achieved with a combination of neo-adjuvant radiotherapy,followed by wide excision and soft tissue reconstruction in the form of vascularised soft tissue transfer. Although limb salvage is now readily achievable, the resultant functional disabilities following excision of major musculotendinous and neurovascular structures can be life changing. In recent years, there has been a move towards functional limb reconstruction in the form of free functioning muscle transfer. This paper reviews the advances in functional limb reconstruction in the setting of preoperative radiation and reports our experience in this challenging reconstructive field.

Maximum Power Point Tracking Using the Incremental Conductance Algorithm for PV Systems Operating in Rapidly Changing Environmental Conditions

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is an important process in Photovoltaic (PV) systems because of the need to extract maximum power from PV panels used in these systems. Without the ability to track and have PV panels operate at its maximum power point (MPP) entails power losses;resulting in high cost since more panels will be required to provide specified energy needs. To achieve high efficiency and low cost, MPPT has therefore become an imperative in PV systems. In this study, an MPP tracker is modeled using the IC algorithm and its behavior under rapidly changing environmental conditions of temperature and irradiation levels is investigated. This algorithm, based on knowledge of the variation of the conductance of PV cells and the operating point with respect to the voltage and current of the panel calculates the slope of the power characteristics to determine the MPP as the peak of the curve. A simple circuit model of the DC-DC boost converter connected to a PV panel is used in the simulation;and the output of the boost converter is fed through a 3-phase inverter to an electricity grid. The model was simulated and tested using MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the IC algorithm for tracking the MPP in PV systems operating under rapidly changing temperatures and irradiations with a settling time of 2 seconds.

Considering the global objective to mitigate climate change,import efforts are made on decreasing the net emission of CO_(2) from gas *** the one hand CO_(2) capture-for example by adsorption onto solid basic materials-allows to withdraw CO_(2) from the waste gas streams emitted by incinerators,cement manufacture plants,combustion plants,power plants,*** the second hand,CO_(2) can be converted to useful *** to methane-using appropriate heterogene-ous catalysts.A relatively innovative strategy consists in combining both technologies by designing materials and processes which can switch between capture and methanation modes *** allows treating complex waste gas effluents by selectively and reversibly capturing CO_(2),and to perform the catalytic hydrogenation in appropriate reaction *** short review presents the main strategies recently reported in the literature for such combined CO_(2) capture and methanation(CCCM)*** discuss the different types of reactor configurations and we present the formulations used in this context as adsorbent,as methanation catalysts,and as“dual functional materials”.

High-temperature phases of solids are often dynamically stable ***-principles study of point defects in such solids at 0 K is prohibited by their static instability,which results in random structures of the defect-containing supercell so that the total energy of the supercell is randomly affected by structural distortions far away from the *** cubic perovskiteα-Cs Pb I_(3) as an example,we first present the problem incurred by the static instability and then propose an approach based on molecular dynamics to carry out ensemble average for tackling the *** affordable simulation time,we obtain converged defect ionization energies,which are unattainable by a standard approach and allow us to evaluate its defect tolerance *** work paves the way for studying defects in statically unstable solids.
