Effects of finite water depth and lateral confinement on ships wakes and resistance

Wash waves produced by ships disintegrate river banks and coastal lines. This phenomenon of bank erosion is mainly due to the height of the waves. Various factors govern the formation of these waves and their amplitudes: the geometry of the water channel, the shape and the speed of the boat, etc.. These factors play an important role on the wave generation, in addition on the resistance of the ship and so on its fuel consumption. Whether to study the impact of wash waves on the ship's environment or its resistance, the analysis of the generated wake is essential. Hence a fine characterization of the wave field is necessary. This study proposes a comparison of wakes generated by two generic ships based on a Wigley hull with block coefficients 0.67 and 0.89 respectively representative of maritime and fluvial ships. The wakes generated in deep water and confined water configurations have been measured for different Froude numbers by a non-intrusive optical stereo-correlation method, giving access to a detailed and complete definition of the generated wave fields. The resistance of the ship hulls has been measured in deep and confined water configurations with a hydrodynamic balance. The results permit one to study the influence of both hull and water channel geometries on the ship wake, on the amplitude of the far-field generated waves and on the near-field hydrodynamic response. Moreover, resistance curves are obtained for both configurations and highlight the effect of both hull and water channel geometries on the resistance coefficient of the ship. A comparison of the resistance curves with or without the ship trim is conducted and shows the influence of the trim on the resistance coefficient in the different ship speed regimes.

Plantain banana is an important cash crop that serves as stable food for millions of people around the world and contributes to income generation. Indeed, they provide a major staple food crop for millions of people and play an important role in the social fabric of many rural communities. Plantain banana cultivation encounters major problem of seedlings unavailability that are essential for the creation of new plantations, as well as parasitic constraints. Mycosphaerella fijiensis is the main pathogen attack constraints of banana plant responsible of black Sigatoka disease, and viruses, which can severely reduce the photosynthetic leaf area, leading to banana production losses of more than 80% in plantations with soil fertility problems. The repeated use of synthetic input is the origin of contamination to the environment, different pollution sources of plants and human health, as well as resistance to some strains of pathogens and plant fertilization problems over time. Recent works carried out in nursery have shown that vivoplants of plantains treated with biostimulants based on natural products notably Tithonia diversifolia biopromote good growth and less susceptibility to M. fijiensis. Indeed, an increase in agromorphological characteristics, good accumulation of growth and defense biomarkers was also observed. In this context, Tithonia diversifolia is shown to be involved in the stimulatory effect mechanism of growth promotion and defensive reaction of plantain vivoplants against various pathogens and it is suggested to be acting as a vital stimulator. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on plantain banana cultivation constraints and on the potential of Tithonia diversifolia in relation with its different stimulatory effects on plantain vivoplants.

Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are widely grown in Cameroon and play a key role in the fight against food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty. However, its cultivation encounters problems due to abiotic and biotic stresses, which leads to the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which cause significant damage to the environment and human health due to the presence of synthetics residues in the seeds, pods and in the leaves that are eaten. Promoting the use of natural products is becoming a necessity for organic and eco-responsible agriculture that limits contamination problems and improves people’s purchasing power. This study aims to assess the effect of biostimulants based on natural products on the growth and nutritional value of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Bean seedlings from white variety (MEX-142) and red variety (DOR-701) were treated every seven days in the field from their pre-emergence, emergence and growth to their maturation under a randomized block experimental design. Six treatments and three repetitions with the biostimulants based on natural products and controls were thus performed and the agromorphological parameters were measured. After 120 days, the contents of growth biomarkers and defense-related enzymes were evaluated in leaves, while the contents of macromolecules, minerals and antinutrients were evaluated in seeds. These biostimulants significantly increased (P P < 0.0001) of antinutrients including oxalates, phytates, tannins and saponins in seeds compared to controls (T+ and T−). Treatment with biostimulants, in particular BS4, improves the performance of bean plants in the field as well as the biofortification of seeds regardless of the variety.

Efficient method for wind velocity estimation and power-extraction maximization using a fourth-order Luenberger observer in a wind-energy-conversion system

This paper proposes an advanced method for estimating numerous parameters in a wind-energy-conversion system with high precision,especially in a transient state,including the rotation speed and mechanical torque of the turbine as well as wind *** suggested approach is designed into two ***,a fourth-order Luenberger observer is proposed to take into account the significant fluctuations of the mechanical torque that can be caused by wind *** observer provides an accurate estimate of speed and mechanical torque in all weather conditions and especially when the wind is *** the same time,the wind velocity is calculated using the Luenberger observer outputs and a model of the mechanical power generated by the ***,these estimated parameters are exploited as input in a maximum-power-point tracking(MPPT)algorithm using the tip-speed ratio(TSR)to improve the sensorless strategy *** results were performed using MATLAB®/Simulink®for both wind gust and real wind *** have verified that for wind gusts with jumps ranging from 3 to 7 m/s,the new observer manages to better follow the rotation speed and the torque of the turbine compared to a usual *** addition,we demonstrated that by applying the proposed estimator in the improved TSR-MPPT strategy,it is possible to extract 3.3%more energy compared to traditional approaches.

Iterative Reconstruction for Transmission Tomography on GPU Using Nvidia CUDA

The iterative reconstruction algorithms for X-ray CT image reconstruction suffer from their high computational cost. Recently Nvidia releases common unified device architecture （CUDA）, allowing developers to access to the processing power of Nvidia graphical processing units （GPUs）, in order to perform general purpose computations. The use of the GPU, as an alternative computation platform, allows decreasing processing times, for parallel algorithms. This paper aims to demonstrate the feasibility of such an implementation for the iterative image reconstruction. The ordered subsets convex （OSC） algorithm, an iterative reconstruction algorithm for transmission tomography, has been developed with CUDA. The performances have been evaluated and compared with another implementation using a single CPU node. The result shows that speed-ups of two orders of magnitude, with a negligible impact on image accuracy, have been observed.

Fabrication of self-assembling nanofibers with optimal cell uptake and therapeutic delivery efficacy

Effective strategies to fabricate finite organic nanoparticles and understanding their structure-dependent cell interaction is highly important for the development of long circulating nanocarriers in cancer *** this contribution,we will capitalize on our recent development of finite supramolecular nanofibers based on the self-assembly of modularly designed cationic multidomain peptides(MDPs)and use them as a model system to investigate structure-dependent cell penetrating *** selfassembled into nanofibers with high density of cationic charges at the fiber-solvent interface to interact with the cell ***,despite the multivalent charge presentation,not all fibers led to high levels of membrane activity and cellular *** flexibility of the cationic charge domains on self-assembled nanofibers plays a key role in effective membrane *** were found to sacrifice their dimension,thermodynamic and kinetic stability for a more flexible charge domain in order to achieve effective membrane *** increased membrane activity led to improved cell uptake of membrane-impermeable chemotherapeutics through membrane pore *** vitro cytotoxicity study showed co-administering of water-soluble doxorubicin with membrane-active peptide nanofibers dramatically reduced the IC50 by eight folds compared to drug *** these detailed structure and activity studies,the acquired knowledge will provide important guidelines for the design of a variety of supramolecular cell penetrating nanomaterials not limited to peptide assembly which can be used to probe various complex biological processes.
