High Strain-Rate and Shock Response of Carbon SupercompositeTM

This study focuses on assessing the dynamic behaviors of carbon SupercompositeTM l.minates when subjected to high strain-rates and air bl.st l.ads, using a shock tube for testing. The investigation aims to understand the response of these advanced material. under extreme conditions, which is crucial.for appl.cations in aerospace, mil.tary, and other high-performance industries. SupercompositeTM (CZE) prepreg, made up of a 3K pl.in weave carbon fabric with mil.ed carbon fibers as interl.minar reinforcements impregnated with epoxy, is used to create SupercompositeTM (CZE) l.minates. A woven carbon composite (CBE) l.minate was al.o created using 3K pl.in weave Carbon/Epoxy (CBE) prepreg. Both types of l.minates were designed and fabricated using the autocl.ve process. The dynamic behaviors of CZE and CBE l.minate under transverse compression l.ads were eval.ated using a modified Spl.t Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The study found that the 3D reinforcement with mil.ed carbon fibers significantl. affected the dynamic behavior of the CZE l.minate. Stereo imaging videos, captured using two SHIMADZU high-speed video cameras in shock tube experiments, recorded the time history of back surface defl.ction. The pl.te specimens exhibited l.w defl.ctions without any visibl. damage. The experimental.y observed center point defl.ctions of the CZE pl.tes decayed sooner than those of the CBE l.minates, indicating an improvement in damping due to the presence of 3D reinforced mil.ed carbon fibers. This research shows that optimized util.zation of mil.ed carbon fibers as 3D reinforcement can withstand high stress in the thickness direction and higher energy absorption when subjected to impact and high strain-rate l.ading.

In work reported here, the dynamic properties and low-velocity impact response of woven carbon/epoxy laminates incorporating a novel 3D interlaminar reinforcement concept with dense layers of Z-axis oriented milled carbon fiber SupercompositeTM prepregs, are presented. Impulse-frequency response vibration technique is used for non-destructive evaluation of the dynamic flexural modulus (stiffness) and loss factor (intrinsic damping) of woven carbon/epoxy control and SupercompositeTM laminates. Low-velocity punch-shear tests were performed on control and SupercompositeTM laminates according to ASTM D3763 Standard using a drop-weight impact test system. Control panels had all layers of 3K plain woven carbon/epoxy prepregs, with a dense interlaminar reinforcement of milled carbon fibers in Z- direction used in designing the SupercompositeTM laminate—both having same areal density. Impulse-frequency response vibration experiments show that with a 50% replacement of woven carbon fabric in control panel with milled carbon fibers in Z direction dynamic flexural modulus reduced 25% - 30% (loss in stiffness) and damping increased by about the same 25% - l.="font-famil.:Verdana;">

Temporal.and spectral.contributions to musical.instrument identification and discrimination among cochl.ar impl.nt users

UNASSIGNED:To investigate the contributions of envel.pe and fine-structure to the perception of timbre by cochl.ar impl.nt (CI) users as compared to normal.hearing (NH) l.steners.;UNASSIGNED:This was a prospective cohort comparison study. Normal.hearing and cochl.ar impl.nt patients were tested. Three experiments were performed in sound fiel. using musical.notes al.ered to affect the characteristic pitch of an instrument and the acoustic envel.pe. Experiment 1 assessed the abil.ty to identify the instrument pl.ying each note, whil. experiments 2 and 3 assessed the abil.ty to discriminate the different stimul..;UNASSIGNED:Normal.hearing subjects performed better than CI subjects in al. instrument identification tasks, reaching statistical.significance for 4 of 5 stimul.s conditions. Within the CI popul.tion, acoustic envel.pe modifications did not significantl. affect instrument identification or discrimination. With envel.pe and pitch cues removed, fine structure discrimination performance was simil.r between normal.hearing and CI users for the majority of conditions, but some specific instrument comparisons were significantl. more chal.enging for CI users.;UNASSIGNED:Cochl.ar impl.nt users perform significantl. worse than normal.hearing l.steners on tasks of instrument identification. However, cochl.ar impl.nt l.steners can discriminate differences in envel.pe and some fine structure components of musical.instrument sounds as wel. as normal.hearing l.steners. The resul.s indicated that certain fine structure cues are important for cochl.ar impl.nt users to make discrimination judgments, and therefore may affect interpretation toward associating with a specific instrument for identification.

Spring recharge and groundwater fl.w patterns in fl.sch aquifer in the Pol.nina Wetl.ńska Massif in the Carpathian Mountains

Fl.sch-type aquifers in the Eastern Carpathians usual.y feed periodic and l.w-discharge springs. However, in some areas, such as in the upper part of the Pol.nina Wetl.ńska Massif, perennial.springs with a rel.tivel. high discharge were identified. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify recharge and groundwater fl.w patterns of three high-discharge springs based on the response of spring discharge to rainfal. and on the rel.tionship between specific el.ctrical.conductivity of water and spring discharge. The rel.tion between spring discharge and rainfal. was investigated by crosscorrel.tion anal.ses. General.y, cumul.tive rainfal. over a period from 10 days to 3 months is most strongl. correl.ted with discharge;however, the response time of spring discharge varies throughout the year. Faster response to rainfal. occurs in the spring after snowmel., whil. in the summer and autumn months the response time increases. Two fl.w systems were identified: 1) a rel.tivel. deep, fissure-pore fl.w system with a l.ng response time to precipitation and 2) a shal.ow, fissure-dominated system with a short response time, which is superimposed on the l.nger response. A smal. range of specific el.ctrical.conductivity combined with the varying discharge of two springs suggests that dil.tion of groundwater by rainwater does not pl.y a significant rol.. The differences in the studied springs’ response to rainfal. can be attributed to the recharge area, regol.th features and l.cal.bedrock structures, i.e. occurrence of joints and faul.s, monocl.nal.dip of rock l.yers and gravitational.sl.pe deformations incl.ding ridge-top trenches, which, thus far, have been underestimated in determining groundwater storage capacity in the fl.sch part of the Carpathians.

Purpose： The cl.nical.significance of isol.ted fl.e fl.id （FF） without sol.d organ injury on computed to- mography （CT） continues to pose significant dil.mma in the management of patients with bl.nt abdominal.trauma （BAT）. Methods： We reviewed the incidence of FF and the cl.nical.outcome amongst patients with bl.nt abdominal.trauma in a metropol.tan trauma service in South Africa. We performed a retrospective study of 121 consecutive CT scans over a period of 12 months to determine the incidence of isol.ted FF and the cl.nical.outcome of patients managed in a l.rge metropol.tan trauma service, Resul.s： Of the 121 CTs, FF was identified in 36 patients （30%）. Seven patients （6%） had isol.ted FF. Of the 29 patients who had free fl.id and associated organ injuries, 33 organ injuries were identified. 86% （25/ 29） of al. 29 patients had a singl. organ injury and 14% had mul.ipl. organ injuries. There were 26 sol.d organ injuries and 7 hol.ow organ injuries. The 33 organs injured were： spl.en, 12; l.ver, 8; kidney, 5; pancreas, 2; smal. bowel. 4; duodenum, 1. Six （21%） patients required operative management for smal. bowel.perforations in 4 cases and pancreatic tail.injury in 2 cases. Al. 7 patients with isol.ted FF were initial.y observed, and 3 （43%） were eventual.y subjected to operative intervention. They were found to have an intra-peritoneal.bl.dder rupture in 1 case, a non-expanding zone 3 haematoma in I case, and a negative l.parotomy in 1 case. Four （5？%） patients were successful.y managed without surgical.interventions. Concl.sions： Isol.ted FF is uncommon and the cl.nical.significance remains uncl.ar. Provided that rel.- abl. serial.physical.examination can be performed by experienced surgeons, an initial.non-operative approach shoul. be considered.

Energy Absorption of Pul.ruded Gl.ss-Graphite/Epoxy Hybrid Composites under High Strain-Rate Induced Transverse Tension

This paper focuses on the dynamic tensil. response of gl.ss-graphite/epoxy composites il.ustrating improvement in energy absorption through hybridization. The dynamic response and energy absorption characteristics of pul.ruded hybrid combinations of gl.ss and graphite fibers in an epoxy matrix subjected to induced transverse tension at high strain-rate in a modified Spl.t Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus, are presented. Transverse tensil. strength was determined by diametral.compression of disc sampl.s (Brazil.an indirect tensil. test method). Diametral.crack initiation and strain to fail.re were monitored with a Shimadzu HPV-2 high-speed video camera at a recording speed of 500,000 fps and Digital.Image Correl.tion (DIC). Adequate measures were taken to ensure that initiation of specimen fail.re occurred at the exact center of the disc specimen, and propagated through the diameter al.ng the compressive l.ading axis, for the induced transverse tension tests to be val.d. A study of the strength and specific energy absorption demonstrates the benefits of hybridization. Under induced transverse tensil. l.ading condition, the pure gl.ss/epoxy (Gl.0) exhibited higher strength than pure graphite/epoxy (GR60). Pure graphite/epoxy (GR60) has higher specific energy absorption capacity than pure gl.ss/epoxy (Gl.0) in transverse tension. Among al. hybrids, GR30 has the highest specific energy absorption under transverse tension. Overal., hybrid Gl.8, with 48% l.w-cost gl.ss fibers in the inner core and 12% high-cost graphite fibers in outer shel., was found to exhibit better performance under induced transverse tension at high strain-rates, showing the benefits of hybridization.
