Interspecific differences in plasma carotenoid profiles in nestlings of three sympatric vulture species

Optimization of Mycelial Culture Conditions and Fructification of Lentinus Species Using Rice Straw and Sawdust Based Substrates

Lentinus tigrinus is a wood-decaying species of macrofungi that belongs to family *** mushroom is known to be edible and with medicinal *** this study,cultivation of different strains of Lentinus tigrinus using rice straw-sawdust based substrate is *** showed that the shortest incubation period was observed in strain 10(16.60 days),and the longest was noted in strain 1(40.50 days).However,strain 10 showed the earliest appearance of fruiting initials(20.70 days),and strain 1 had the longest period(44 days).In terms of fruiting body size,strain 6 recorded the widest mean pileus diameter(72.2 mm),and strain 10 had the longest mean stipe length(41.22 mm).Moreover,strain 6 produced the highest yield of 81.83 g and biological efficiency of 16.37%.Interestingly,although they belong to the same species,cultivation phase and fruiting body performance of different strains of *** may also vary depending on geographical origin,which is very important to consider in strain selection.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse the regularity of the EEG background activity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients to test the hypothesis that the irregularity of the AD patients’EEG is lower than that of age-matched controls. Methods: We recorded the EEG from 19 scalp electrodes in 10 AD patients and 8 age-matched controls and estimated the Approximate Entropy (ApEn). ApEn is a non-linear statistic that can be used to quantify the irregularity of a time series. Larger values correspond to more complexity or irregularity. A spectral analysis was also performed. Results: ApEn was significantly lower in the AD patients at electrodes P3 and P4 (P < 0.01), indicating a decrease of irregularity. We obtained 70%sensitivity and 100%specificity at P3, and 80%sensitivity and 75%specificity at P4. Results seemed to be complementary to spectral analysis. Conclusions: The decreased irregularity found in the EEG of AD patients in the parietal region leads us to think that EEG analysis with ApEn could be a useful tool to increase our insight into brain dysfunction in AD. However, caution should be applied due to the small sample size. Significance: This article represents a first step in demonstrating the feasibility of ApEn for recognition of EEG changes in AD.

Objective: In this study, we applied a novel procedure to calculate the mean frequency from the Magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals of 22 patients with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), 22 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 21 healthy controls. A significant mean frequency decrease was expected in pathological groups. MCI subjects are expected to show intermediate mean frequency values between AD patients and controls. Methods: MEG signal was obtained from a whole-head 148 channels magnetometer in a resting condition. We estimated the power spectral density from the MEG signal by means of the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function. Then, we computed the mean frequency for each subject. Results: Mean frequency was higher in controls (12.46±2.00 Hz, mean±SD) than in MCI subjects (10.82±2.21 Hz) with significant differences (P < 0.05). Moreover, mean frequency values in MCI subjects were higher than in AD patients (9.06±2.48 Hz,P < 0.05). We also detected a decrease of 0.17 Hz per year in mean frequency from normal subjects’MEG (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Results demonstrated that the approach adopted for the calculation of a mean frequency score seems to be adequate and sensitive to detect differences between normal aging, cognitive deterioration and AD. In addition, data may contribute to the theoretical discussio n on the nature of mild cognitive impairment and its similitudes with Alzheimer ’s disease. Significance: This paper may be considered a first step to obtain a reliable measure which summarizes spectral information, and might be of a poten tial clinical interest.
