Magma chamber growth models in the upper crust: A review of the hydraulic and inertial constraints

Finite volumes of magma moving in confinement, store hydraulic potential energy for the generation,control and transmission of power. The Pascal's principle in a hydraulic j.ck arrangement is used to model the vertical and lateral growth of sills. The small input piston of the hydraulic j.ck is equivalent to the feeder dike, the upper large expansible piston equivalent to the magmatic chamber and the inertial force of the magma in the dike is the input force. This arrangement is particularly relevant to the case of sills expanding with blunt tips, for which rapid fracture propagation is inhibited. Hydraulic models concur with experimental data that show that lateral expansion of magma into a sill is promoted when the vertical ascent of magma through a feeder dike reaches the bottom contact with an overlying, flat rigid-layer. At this point, the magma is forced to decelerate, triggering a pressure wave through the conduit caused by the continued ascent of magma further down(fluid-hammer effect). This pressure wave can provide overpressure enough to trigger the initial hydraulic lateral expansion of magma into an incipient sill, and still have enough input inertial force left to continue feeding the hydraulic system. The lateral expansion underneath the strong impeding layer, causes an area increase and thus, further hydraulic amplification of the input inertial force on the sides and roof of the incipient sill, triggering further expansion in a self-reinforcing process. Initially, the lateral pressure increase is larger than that in the roof allowing the sill to expand. However, expansion eventually increases the total integrated force on the roof allowing its uplift into either a laccolith, if the roof preserves continuity, or into a piston bounded by a circular set of fractures. Hydraulic models for shallow magmatic chambers, also suggest that laccolith-like intrusions require the existence of a self-supported chamber roof. In contrast, if the roof of magmatic cham

Short- and long-term effects of developmental corticosterone exposure on avian physiology, behavioral phenotype, cognition, and fitness： A review

A growing body of evidence from across taxa suggests that exposure to elevated levels of glucocorticoids during early development can have long-term effects upon physiological and behavioral phenotypes. Additionally, there is some, though limited, evidence that similar early exposure can also negatively impact cognitive ability. Following pioneering mammalian studies, several avian studies have revealed that the responsiveness of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal （HPA） axis as an adult can be explained by levels of corticosterone, the avian glucocorticoid, the individual experienced as a nestling or even as an embryo via yolk exposure. Studies also suggest that perinatal exposure to corticosterone can have effects upon avian ＇personalities＇ or coping styles, and findings from mammalian studies suggest that these long-term effects are mediated epigenetically via altered expression of relevant DNA sequences. Although a consistent pattern across-species has yet to emerge, recent work in Florida scrub-j.ys Aphelocoma coerulescens found that baseline corticosterone levels in ll-day-old nestlings explained 84% of the varia- tion in ＇personality＇（bold vs. timid） when those individuals were tested approximately seven months later. Nestlings with elevated corticosterone levels were more timid than those individuals that as nestlings experienced relatively low corticosterone levels. Some researchers have suggested that parents might use such mechanisms to ＇program＇ their offsprings＇ phenotype to best fit prevailing environmental conditions. This review will visit what is known about the links between stressful developmental conditions that result in exposure to elevated corticosterone and the short- and long-term effects of this steroid hormone upon central nervous system function and whether alterations thereof are beneficial, deleterious, or neutral. Clk/STY is a LAMMER protein kinase capable to phosphorylate serine/arginine-rich (SR) proteins that modulate pre-mRNA splicing. Clk/STY alternative splicing generates transcripts encoding a full-length kinase and a truncated catalyti-cally inactive protein. Here we showed that clk/STY, as well as other members of the family (e.g. clk2, clk3 and clk4),are up-regulated during HMBA-induced erythroleukemia cell differentiation. mRNAs coding for the full-length and thetruncated forms were responsible for the overall increased expression. In clk/STY, however, a switch was observed forthe ratio of the two alternative spliced products. In undifferentiated cells the full-length transcript was more abundantwhereas the transcript encoding for the truncated form predominated at latter stages of differentiation. Surprisingly,overexpression of clk/STY did not alter the splicing switch upon differentiation in MEL cells. These results suggest thatclk/STY might contribute to control erythroid differentiation by a mechanism that implicates a balance between thesetwo isoforms.

Members of the Botryosphaeriaceae are well known fungi associated with dieback,canker and fruit rot on various hosts worldwide,including *** aim of this study was identify a large collection of Botryosphaeriaceae species associated with dieback and stem-end rot of mango in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil,and compare the species in relation to mycelial growth,pathogenicity and virulence.A total of 115 isolates were sampled and based on morphology and DNA sequence data(ITS and EF1-α)seven taxa were identified,namely,Botryosphaeria dothidea,***,Fusicoccum fabicercianum,Neofusicoccum parvum,*** ***,Neoscytalidium dimidiatum and Pseudofusicoccum *** and *** were the most commonly isolated species,which represented 37%and 33%of all isolates *** is reported for the first time in association with mango diseases *** were significant differences among the species obtained in this study in relation to optimum temperature for mycelial growth and mycelial growth *** species were pathogenic on mango *** were significant differences in virulence among the species,with *** and *** being the most virulent species,while *** was the least virulent.

Embryo and Endosperm Phytochemicals from Polyembryonic Maize Kernels and Their Relationship with Seed Germination

Because of the growing worldwide demand for maize grain,new alternatives have been sought for breeding of this cereal,e.g.,development of polyembryonic varieties,which agronomic performance could positively impact the grain yield per unit area,and nutritional *** obj.ctives of this study were to(1)determine the phytochemicals present in the embryo and endosperm of grain from maize families with high,low,and null polyembryony frequency,which were planted at different locations,and(2)state the relationship between these compounds and seed *** extracted phytochemicals from corn were identified by *** results showed that the genotype with the highest presence of phytochemicals was the brachytic population with high polyembryony called“BAP”,which also required less water during the germination *** number of phytochemicals in both embryo and endosperm tissues was not related to the sowing location where they came from or the type of *** number of different phytochemicals depended on the grain tissue from where they were *** chemical compounds found in the different maize tissues were related to the development of the plant,either in roots or nibs because these are mainly associated with the lignin synthesis.

Synthesis of In_2S_3 thin films by spray pyrolysis from precursors with different[S]/[In] ratios

Indium sulfide （InzS3） thin films were prepared by chemical spray pyrolysis technique from solutions with different [S]/[In] ratios on glass substrates at a constant temperature of 250 ~C. Thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, atomic force microscopy （AFM）, energy disper- sive X-ray spectroscopy （EDS）, Raman spectroscopy and optical transmittance spectroscopy. All samples exhibit a polycrystalline structure with a preferential orientation along （0, 0, 12）. A good stoichiometry was attained for all samples. The morphology of thin film surfaces, as seen by SEM, was dense and no cracks or pinholes were ob- served. Raman spectroscopy analysis shows active modes belonging to j.-1naS3 phase. The optical transmittance in the visible range is higher than 60% and the band gap energy slightly increases with the sulfur to indium ratio, attaining a value of 2.63 eV for [S]/[In] ： 4.5.

Resistance analysis of the rice variety Huaidao 5 against root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola

Meloidogyne graminicola has emerged as one of the most destructive plant-parasitic nematodes affecting rice(Oryza sativa)production *** to *** in rice could be the most effective option for its ***,sources of germplasm with resistance to *** in rice remain ***,we describe the root attraction,gall formation and genetic analysis of the resistance to *** in the rice variety Huidao 5.A nematode attraction assay showed that second-stage j.veniles(j.s)of *** were attracted at the root tip of Huaidao 5 within 8 h without a significant reduction in attraction compared to the susceptible rice variety Nanj.ng *** observation of the infection revealed that the j.s invaded root tissues 12 h after inoculation,but their subsequent movement to the root tip was hindered in Huaidao 5,resulting in decreased nematode number compared to Nanj.ng ***,we used the soil and hydroponic culture systems to simulate upland and flooding conditions in the paddy fields respectively,and found that gall number was significantly reduced,and nematode development was clearly suppressed in Huaidao *** investigate the genetic basis of this resistance,cross breeding was performed between the Huaidao 5 and Nanj.ng 9108 *** was no reduction in the resistance of the F_(1) offspring to *** in the greenhouse or field trials,suggesting that a dominant gene could control resistance in Huaidao *** summar.,this study provides a detailed characterization of a novel source of resistance to *** in rice,which is of great potential for use in crop breeding.

Provenance and tectonic setting of sandstones of the Lomas Coloradas Formation, Cabullona Group, Sonora, México: Constraints on petrography and geochemistry

The sedimentary rocks of the Cabullona Group are well exposed in the Cabullona Basin of northeastern Sonora, Mexico, which represent syntectonic sedimentation associated with Laramide-style deformation during the Campanian-early Maastrichtian. The sandstones of the Lomas Coloradas Formation deposited at the upper part of the Cabullona Group. Petrography and geochemical(maj.r, trace, and rare earth elements) studies were carried out on the sandstones to interpret the palaeoweathering, provenance,and tectonic setting of the Lomas Coloradas Formation sandstones. Most of the sandstone modal analysis data plotted in the QFL and Qm FLt ternary diagrams fall into the fields of dissected arcs and recycled orogens,respectively. Geochemically the sandstones are classified as litharenites while few samples plot into the arkosic field. The chondrite-normalized REE diagrams for sandstones have LREE-enriched, relatively flat HREE patterns with negative Eu anomalies. CIA values and the A-CN-K diagram indicate a low intensity of chemical weathering in the source area. The tectonic setting diagram suggests both arc and rift settings for the studied sandstones. The bivariate and ternary diagrams and elemental ratios suggest a felsic source for the Lomas Coloradas Formation. The average REE patterns of the studied sandstones are comparable with REE patterns of the granite from the Caborca block, the rhyolite and granite of the Tarahumar. Formation, and the Mesozoic felsic volcanic rocks. The modeled mixture of 40% Proterozoic granite, 30% Triassic arc, 10% j.rassic arc, and 20% Laramide arc represents the probable source rocks for the Lomas Coloradas Formation.

Global Standards and Local Policies for School Diabetes Care

Obj.ctives: The purpose of this study is to analyse the practical implementation of regional and na-tional policies through the Protocol of Care of Children and Adolescents in School (2010) in Extremadura Region (Spain), and to compare its contents with the international standards of diabetes care at school defined by American Diabetes Association and International Diabetes Federation. The measures not only affect the security and diabetes care, but also inclusion and the right to health. Methods: A documental comparative analysis between the local and international standards about diabetes care in school setting is carried out. This analysis is framed in a larger proj.ct focused on the study of health promoting school and diabetes education, in which perceptions of children and adolescents with diabetes, their parents and school staff were studied. Results: The Protocol of Care of Children and Adolescents in School (2010) contains some international recommendations about the care of T1DM at school, but in other cases the measures are non-specific. The distribution of responsibilities for care at school is unclear and no monitoring and evaluation indicators are defined. Some elements are identified to be implemented in the tool to favour the security, management of T1DM care and wellbeing. In general, these elements refer to school plan for diabetes care, school organization and teachers, and school community training. Conclusion: It is required to develop specific policies and decisive action to ensure the right to health of children with diabetes and the full application of international standards for diabetes care at school.
