Preliminary Research Study for Antibiotics in Eggs Produced and Sold in Bamako, Mali

The quality of agri-food products, in particular those of poultry origin, has now become an imperative. Because of the antibiotics used in poultry production, we are seeing the presence of antibiotic residues in products from poultry farming, especially eggs. Residues in eggs do not always comply with regulatory requirements, which can have harmful consequences for consumers such as: risk of allergies or risk of antibiotic resistance. This study was carried out with the aim of evaluating the presence of residues of veterinary antibiotics in eggs produced and marketed in the district of Bamako and surroundings. All samples were analyzed using the Premi ®Test which is a rapid detection kit for antibiotic residues in different materials. We collected 900 eggs from 10 farms and 10 markets in Bamako. Out of 900 eggs, 228 were tested. One hundred and eighty-nine (189) eggs tested negative for the presence of antibiotic residues, i.e. 82.9%;on the other hand, 39 were positive, i.e. 17.1%. This study clearly shows the presence of antibiotic residues in eggs from farms and various markets in Bamako and the surrounding area. This will allow us to continue our study at a later date to identify the types of antibiotic and to dose them.

Comparative Study of Gut Microbiota in Breast Cancer Patients versus Controls in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

Context: The gut microbiota represents a complex ecosystem encompassing all unicellular microorganisms residing in the digestive tract, primarily bacteria, fungi, archaea, and even viruses. The relationship between the host and the microbiota is symbiotic: bacteria benefit from a stable environment, while the host gains numerous capabilities in terms of digestion, metabolism, nutrition, and immunity. However, numerous studies suggest that the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in various non-communicable diseases, including obesity, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, allergic and immune disorders, behavioral disorders, and even certain cancers. The objective of our study was to characterize the gut microbiota of a group of breast cancer patients by comparing it to that of control subjects in Côte d’Ivoire, using a metagenomic approach. Method: A case-control study was conducted from May 2020 to September 2023. A total of 85 women (39 cases and 46 controls) were recruited, and stool samples were collected from both breast cancer patients and healthy women. Among these, ten (10) samples from patients and ten (10) samples from healthy women were randomly selected for the study of the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota was characterized by sequencing the V4 region of 16S rRNA using metagenomic NGS technology, and bioinformatic analysis was performed using the mothur pipeline. Results: In women with breast cancer, we observed a reduction in the relative abundance of the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, as well as an increase in the phyla Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia. Additionally, their microbiota exhibited lower Chao1 and Sobs diversities compared to the control women (p < 0.05). Molecular variance analysis (AMOVA) revealed a significant difference between the case and control groups (p < 0.001). Non-compliant antibiotics pose problems of therapeutic efficacy at the level of the individual, but also a serious public health problem. The objective of our study was to evaluate the quality of generic amoxicillin (42 samples) by analytical methods in Dakar/Senegal. At 100% visual inspection of compliance;100% compliance uniformity test;at the dissolution test all > 80% (86.8% to 108.8%). The presence of amoxicillin with the following contents: Tablets (95.2% to 104.1%);Capsules (91.5% to 113.9%) and Suspensions drinkable (96.9% - 118.7%). All the samples in our study are 100% compliant according to the European and American pharmacopoeias (90% - 120%). Other studies should therefore be oriented in the direction of stability as well as the dosage of degradation products.

Hypertensive Retinopathy in Normotensive Blacks: About 3 Cases

In case of hypertension, hypertensive retinopathy is normally an indicator of target organ damage. This sign can be frequently detected even in normotensive subjects. Among 94 normotensive volunteers chosen with regard of the hypertensive status of their parents, we could report the case of 3 black women who had hypertensive retinopathy. As changes in retinal microvasculature precede other signs of damage, we suggest fundus photography routine to be performed more frequently in assessing cardiovascular risks in hypertensive individual and their offspring, especially in black African population, where hypertension is severe.
