Removal experiments of phenol, aniline, 2,4-dichlorophenol, nonylphenol and bisphenol A （BPA） using Spirodela polyrrhiza- bacterial associations revealed that all compounds but BPA underwent accelerated removal. The mechanisms differed depending on the substrates. It was found that S. polyrrhiza has a great ability to release phenolic compound-rich root exudates, and the exudates seem to stimulate bacterial degradation of a variety of aromatic compounds.

We report the activation energy, ΔEa, for the quantum yield in thermally assisted photoelectron emission(TAPE) under 210-nm-wavelength light irradiation, and the associated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) results. Samples were cleaned only in acetone and scratched in air, water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, benzene, and cyclohexane. Glow curves, describing the temperature dependence of photoelectron emission(PE) quantum yield(emitted electrons/photon), Y, were obtained. A simple method of determining ΔEa using Y, called YGC, at seven temperatures up to 353 °C, for the same Y glow curve, was proposed. The ΔEa obtained using this method was almost the same as that obtained from Y for seven stationary temperatures(YST). For scratched samples, the TAPE was measured over two cycles of temperature increase and subsequent decrease(Up1, Down1 and Up2, Down2 scans) in the 25–339 °C range, and ΔE_a was obtained from YGC. The Arrhenius plot was approximated by a straight line, although a convex swelling peak appeared in the Up1 scan. ΔE_(aUp1) was in the 0.212–0.035 eV range, depending on the environment in which scratching was performed; ΔE_(aUp1) for water was much higher than that for acetone. This was explained in terms of the mode of the acid–base interaction between the liquid molecules and the hydroxyl group of Fe–Oh. The values of ΔE_(aDown1), ΔEa Up2, and ΔE_(aDown2) were in the 0.038–0.012 eV range. The total count of electrons emitted during the Up1 and Up2 scans was found to decrease with increasing ΔE_(aUp1) and ΔE_(aUp2), respectively. ΔE_(aUp2) was found to increase with increasing presence of the FeO component in the analyzed Fe oxides. The convex swelling peak was attributed to the removal of carbon materials from the scratched surface and the effect of the increased electron density of the surface hydroxyl group of FeOh under the light irradiation.

The rainbow schlieren deflectometry has been combined with the computed tomography to obtain three-dimensional density fields of shock containing free jets and we call the method the schlieren CT. Experiments on the schlieren CT have been performed at a nozzle pressure ratio of 4.0 by using an axisymmetric convergent nozzle with an inner diameter of 10 mm at the exit where the nozzle was operated at an underexpanded condition. Multidirectional rainbow schlieren pictures of an underexpanded sonic jet can be acquired by rotating the nozzle about its longitudinal axis in equal angular intervals and the three-dimensional density fields are reconstructed by the schlieren CT. The validity of the schlieren CT is verified by a comparison with the density fields reconstructed by the Abel inversion method. As a result, it is found that excellent quantitative agreement is reached between the three-dimensional jet density fields reconstructed from both methods.

Photoluminescence, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence properties of Tb-doped 12CaO·7Al2O3 single crystals grown by FZ method

Tb-doped 12CaO·7Al_2O_3（Tb：C12A7） crystals were synthesized by the floating zone（FZ） method and the photoluminescence（PL）, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence（TSL） properties were investigated. The photoluminescence（PL） emission spectra and PL decay time profiles were investigated by using Quantaurus-tau（hamamatsu）. The scintillation spectra and decay time profiles were measured by using our laboratory-constructed set-up under X-ray irradiation. Finally, TSL glow curve was measured by using Nanogray TL-2000 with the heating rate of 1 °C/s. In PL and scintillation, emission peaks were observed at 493, 543, 587 and 620 nm due to the 4f-4f transitions of Tb3~＋. Decay time constants of the emission by PL and scintillation appeared to be different, and the measured values were approximately 2.4 and 1.9 ms, respectively. After X-ray irradiations, the 0.5%（all Tb contents in this paper are in mole fraction） and 1.0% Tb-doped samples showed a single intense and broad glow peak around 100 oC while 1.2%–1.5% Tb-doped samples showed notable additional peak around 250 oC.

To generate cost-effective technologies for the removal of arsenic from water, we developed an enrichment culture of chemolithoau- totrophic arsenite oxidizing bacteria （CAOs） that could effectively oxidize widely ranging concentrations of As（III） to As（V）. In addition, we attempted to elucidate the enrichment process and characterize the microbial composition of the enrichment culture. A CAOs enrichment culture capable of stably oxidizing As（III） to As（V） was successfully constructed through repeated batch cultivation for more than 700 days, during which time the initial As（iiI） concentrations were increased in a stepwise manner from 1 to 10-12 mmol/L. As（III） oxidation activity of the enrichment culture gradually improved, and 10-12 mmol/L As（III） was almost completely oxidized within four days. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis showed that the dominant bacteria in the enrichment culture varied drastically during the enrichment process depending on the As（III） concentration. Isolation and characterization of bacteria in the enrichment culture revealed that the presence of multiple CAOs with various As（Ⅲ） oxidation abilities enabled the culture to adapt to a wide range of As（Ⅲ） concentrations. The CAOs enrichment culture constructed here may be useful for pretreatment of water from which arsenic is being removed.

As an established spatial analytical tool,Geographically Weighted Regression(GWR)has been applied across a variety of ***,its usage can be challenging for large datasets,which are increasingly prevalent in today’s digital *** this study,we propose two high-performance R solutions for GWR via Multi-core Parallel(MP)and Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUDA)techniques,respectively GWR-MP and *** compared GWR-MP and GWR-CUDA with three existing solutions available in Geographically Weighted Models(GWmodel),Multi-scale GWR(MGWR)and Fast GWR(FastGWR).Results showed that all five solutions perform differently across varying sample sizes,with no single solution a clear winner in terms of computational ***,solutions given in GWmodel and MGWR provided acceptable computational costs for GWR studies with a relatively small sample *** a large sample size,GWR-MP and FastGWR provided coherent solutions on a Personal Computer(PC)with a common multi-core configuration,GWR-MP provided more efficient computing capacity for each core or thread than *** cases when the sample size was very large,and for these cases only,GWR-CUDA provided the most efficient solution,but should note its I/O cost with small *** summary,GWR-MP and GWR-CUDA provided complementary high-performance R solutions to existing ones,where for certain data-rich GWR studies,they should be preferred.

Case study on father-child communication in Chinese urban apartment houses through active RFID technology

This paper used Active Radio Frequency Identification （Active RFID） technology to identify in which rooms fathers and their chitd tend to stay together and talk, and in which rooms they stay separately in seven one-child families living in Chinese urban apartment houses. The father was found to stay together with the child 0.5%-25% of the time when both father and chitd stayed at home. The use of the living room as the place in which the child stays with the father and tatks was found to be highest （five out of seven families）, fotlowed by the dining room and the child＇s room. In over half of the cases when the child stays with,the father in the living room or dining room and either of them tatk, the chitd spoke over 1.6 times more than the father. however, in the child＇s room, the child always spoke tess than the father, and the duration of the child＇s speech was less than 70% of that of the father. Findings showed that the instances in which child and father stay in different rooms fell into two groups. First, five of the seven subject fathers tended to stay in the living room, whereas the children stayed either in their room or in their parents＇ room to use the PC. Second, two fathers stayed in the studio or dining room to work, while their chitdren stayed in the living room or their own rooms. For both groups, the duration
