Single-phase bcc-ferrite in an interstitial free(IF)steel was deformed to different strains in a wide range from low to high strains(ε=1–7)by torsion under different Zener-hollomon(Z)*** specimens were rapidly quenched after the torsion to preserve microstructures formed under different deformation *** results showed that during high-Z(low-temperature)deformation,grains were subdivided by geometrically necessary boundaries(GNBs)via the grain subdivision *** to high strains(ε>5)led to the ultrafine lamellar structures(with grain sizeshaving high misorientation *** Z with increasing temperature and/or decreasing strain rate accelerated thermally activated processes,such as dynamic recovery and boundary *** the ultrafine lamella formed under the high-Z condition,a variety of microstructures having equiaxed morphologies with fine to coarse grain sizes(>1μm)were realized with decreasing *** significance of the grain subdivision and the thermally activated phenomena on the formation of various microstructures under different deformation conditions is discussed.

Mechanical cutting provides one of the most flexible and environmentally friendly excavation *** has attracted numerous efforts to model the rock chipping and fragmentation process,especially using the explicit finite element method(FEM) and bonded particle model(BPM),in order to improve cutting *** study investigates the application of a general-purpose graphic-processing-unit parallelised hybrid finite-discrete element method(FDEM) which enjoys the advantages of both explicit FEM and BPM,in modelling the rock chipping and fragmentation process in the rock scratch test of mechanical rock *** input parameters of FDEM are determined through a calibration procedure of modelling conventional Brazilian tensile and uniaxial compressive tests of limestone,A series of scratch tests with various cutting velocities,cutter rake angles and cutting depths is then modelled using FDEM with calibrated input parameters.A few cycles of cutter/rock interactions,including their engagement and detachment process,are modelled for each case,which is conducted for the first time to the best knowledge of the authors,thanks to the general purpose graphic processing units(GPGPU) *** failure mechanism,cutting force,chipping morphology and effect of various factors on them are discussed on the basis of the modelled ***,it is concluded that GPGPU-parallelised FDEM provides a powerful tool to further study rock cutting and improve cutting efficiencies since it can explicitly capture different fracture mechanisms contributing to the rock chipping as well as chip formation and the separation process in mechanical ***,it is concluded that chipping is mostly owed to the mix-mode Ⅰ-Ⅱ fracture in all cases although mode Ⅱ cracks and mode Ⅰ cracks are the dominant failures in rock cutting with shallow and deep cutting depths,*** chip morphology is found to be a function of cutter velocdty,cutting depth and cutter rake angl

Saline-alkaline soils are found worldwide, affecting over 1 billion hectares of arable lands especially in arid and semiarid regions. Alkaline soils are characterized by the high ph and low nutrient availability as well as high concentrations of bicarbonate and carbonate, being highly detrimental to crop production. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO and ITPS, 2015 ), approximately 60% of saline soils are concurrently affected by alkalization, posing a serious threat to food security. In recent decades, the breeding objectives for staple crops were mainly focused on yield, quality, and resistance to diseases, leaving alkaline tolerance largely overlooked. Now more than ever, we need to understand the mechanisms of plant alkaline tolerance to develop new crop varieties better adapted to alkaline soil conditions.

In Japan, tile exfoliation from external walls is a serious problem that must be prevented. In our previous study, a tiled concrete sample was dried at a temperature of 105 ℃ for pre- conditioning. Then, tile exfoLiation occurred. Since this seemed to indicate a relationship between tile exfotiation and moisture content, it was further pursued in this study. First, drying experiments on concrete samples just after tiling were carried out under different ambient air temperatures. The following results were obtained. Tile exfoliation occurs even at the Lower drying temperatures. Tile exfoliation starts at corner tiles （seen in all experiments）. When the average moisture content of the tiled concrete sample becomes Lower than a certain value, tile exfoliation occurs. Next, the experiments were analyzed using a three-dimensional model of simultaneous heat and moisture transport. The calculated moisture content agreed well with the measured results. By comparing the measurement and simulation results, it is considered that the tiles are exfoliated when the moisture content of the mortar on the back side of the tile becomes Lower than a certain value. Therefore, the moisture content can serve as an index for evaluating the occurrence of the tile exfoliation.

This paper explores the problem-solving behavior of people in design activities through a protocol analysis of verbal reports on the interior work design process simulated by an interactive evolutionary computation （IEC）. The protocol analysis method was used to explore the ways of thinking of the participants throughout the process. The analysis reveals that different parts of the interior scene have different effects on the evaluations, and people tend to use the same evaluation criteria continuously on several images. This kind of behavior is consistent with that of professional designers in past studies and is revealed applicable to nonprofessionals in the current research.

Biological removal of selenate in saline wastewater by activated sludge under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions

Selenium (Se)-containing industrial wastewater is often coupled with notable salinity. however, limited studies have examined biological treatment of Se-containing wastewater under high salinity conditions. In this study, a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with activated sludge was applied to treat selenate in synthetic saline wastewater (3% w/v NaCl) supplemented with lactate as the carbon source. Start-up of the SBR was performed with addition of 1–5 mM of selenate under oxygen-limiting conditions, which succeeded in removing more than 99% of the soluble Se. Then, the treatment of 1 mM Se with cycle duration of 3 days was carried out under alternating anoxic/oxic conditions by adding aeration period after oxygen-limiting period. Although the SBR maintained soluble Se removal of above 97%, considerable amount of solid Se remained in the effluent as suspended solids and total Se removal fluctuated between about 40 and 80%. Surprisingly, the mass balance calculation found a considerable decrease of Se accumulated in the SBR when the aeration period was prolonged to 7 h, indicating very efficient Se biovolatilization. Furthermore, microbial community analysis suggested that various Se-reducing bacteria coordinately contributed to the removal of Se in the SBR and main contributors varied depending on the operational conditions. This study will offer implications for practical biological treatment of selenium in saline wastewater.

Formation mechanism of extension fractures induced by excavation of a gallery in soft sedimentary rock,horonobe area,Northern Japan

This paper focuses on the formation mechanism of fractures induced by excavation of a gallery in soft sedimentary rocks in the horonobe area of Japan. Detailed fracture mapping of the gallery indicates that the fractures consist of both pre-existing shear fractures and excavation damaged zone （EDZ） fractures. EDZ fractures correspond to weak planes associated with bedding planes or transgranular cracks. The EDZ fractures terminate against pre-existing shear fractures. Therefore, even for excavations in soft sedimentary rocks, formation of the EDZ fractures are controlled by pre-existing fractures and earlier weak planes.

To suppress the cavitation in the impellers and to make the turbo-pump lives longer, the inducer was separated from the main impeller and both impellers were driven independently. The performance of the pump and the flow conditions around the impellers were investigated experimentally and the following results were obtained. （1）The main impeller contributes to the flow interaction between the inducer and the main impeller. （2）The rotational speeds of both impellers can be controlled independently in order to suppress simultaneously the cavitation not only in the main impeller, but also in the inducer.

Cellular physiological approach for treatment of gastric cancer

Recent studies show that ion channels/transporters play important roles in fundamental cellular functions that would be involved in the cancer process. We review the evidence for their expression and functioning in human gastric cancer (GC), and evaluate the potential of cellular physiological approach in clinical management. Various types of ion channels, such as voltage-gated K+ channels, intracellular Cl- channels and transient receptor potential channels have been found to express in GC cells and tissues, and to control cell cycles. With regard to water channels, aquaporin 3 and 5 play an important role in the progression of GC. Regulators of intracellular ph, such as anion exchanger, sodium-hydrogen exchanger, vacuolar h+-ATPases and carbonic anhydrases are also involved in tumorigenesis of GC. Their pharmacological manipulation and gene silencing affect cellular behaviours, suggesting their potential as therapeutic targets for GC. Our studies indicate the intracellular Cl- concentration could act as a mediator of cellular signaling and control cell cycle progression in GC cells. Further, we demonstrate the cytocidal effects of hypotonic shock on GC cells, and indicate that the blockade of Cl- channels/transporters enhances these effects by inhibiting regulatory volume decrease. A deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms may lead to the discovery of these cellular physiological approaches as a novel therapeutic strategy for GC.

A ducted Darrieus-type turbine has been proposed for hydropower utilization of extra-low head less than 2 *** the hydro turbine system,in general,might consist of an intake,runner casing section and a draft tube for higher efficiency operation,it was clarified in previous experiment that there was no need of the side-walls of runner casing section and a draft-tube for keeping the efficiency high in the case of duct with an inlet *** would yield a simplification of the structure of the turbine *** order to reconfirm this result for large-sized turbine with 560 mm×300 mm duct,instead of small-sized one with 400 mm×200 mm duct,the side-wall effect on turbine performance was experimentally investigated for three-or four-bladed *** the present paper,the experimental results are shown with considering flow behaviors in the runner section.
