Conventional chemotherapy based on cytotoxic drugs is facing tough challenges recently following the advances of monoclonal antibodies and molecularly targeted *** is critical to inspire new potential to remodel the value of this classical therapeutic ***,we fabricate bisphosphonate coordination lipid nanogranules(bC-LNPs)and load paclitaxel(PTX)to boost the chemo-and immuno-therapeutic synergism of cytotoxic *** in bC-LNPs@PTX,a bisphosphonate to block mevalonate metabolism,works as both the structure and drug constituent in nanogranules,where alendronate coordinated with calcium ions to form the particle *** synergy of alendronate enhances the efficacy of paclitaxel,suppresses tumor metastasis,and alters the cytotoxic *** from the paclitaxel-induced apoptosis,the involvement of alendronate inhibits the mevalonate metabolism,changes the mitochondrial morphology,disturbs the redox homeostasis,and causes theaccumulation of mitochondrial ROS and lethal lipid peroxides(LPO).These factors finally trigger the ferroptosis of tumor cells,an immunogenic cell death mode,which remodels the suppressive tumor immune microenvironment and synergizes with ***,by switching paclitaxel-induced apoptosis to mevalonate metabolism-triggered ferroptosis,bC-LNPs@PTX provides new insight into the development of cytotoxic drugs and highlights the potential of metabolism regulation in cancer therapy.

Granger causal representation learning for groups of time series

Discovering causality from multivariate time series is an important but challenging *** existing methods focus on estimating the Granger causal structures among multivariate time series,while ignoring the prior knowledge of these time series, e.g., the group of the time series. Focusing on discovering the Granger causal structures among groups of time series, we propose a Granger causal representation learning method to solve this problem. First, we use the multiset canonical correlation analysis method to learn the Granger causal representation of each group of time series. Then, we model the Granger causal relationships among the learned Granger causal representations using a recurrent neural network with temporal information. Finally, we formulate the above two stages into one unified optimization problem, which is efficiently solved using the augmented Lagrangian method. We conduct extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Screening and identification of salt tolerance soybean varieties and germplasms

Soil salinization is a globally prevalent abiotic environmental stress. The imbalance of ions caused by high concentrations of sodium chloride results in a 40% reduction in soybean yield. Soybean, as an important crop for soil quality improvement, necessitates the identification of salt-tolerant varieties and germplasms to effectively utilize and enhance saline-alkali land. In this study, we assessed the salt tolerance of 435 soybean varieties and germplasms during the seedling stage. Among them, Qihuang34, You2104, Hongzhudou, Pamanheidou, and Osage exhibited grade 1 salt tolerance rates surpassing other tested materials. Furthermore, Hongzhudou and Qihuang34 demonstrated higher salt tolerance during germination and emergence stages based on their elevated rates of emergence, salt tolerance index, chlorophyll content, and shoot fresh weights. Overall findings provide valuable resources for molecular breeding efforts aimed at developing salt-tolerant soybean varieties suitable for cultivation in saline-alkali soils. © 2024 the Oil Crop Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences

The Role of Renewable Protocatechol Acid in Epoxy Coating Modification: Significantly Improved Antibacterial and Adhesive Properties

It is of great significance to design epoxy coatings with superior antibacterial properties and high adhesive properties, as well as excellent processing, superior durability, and high transparency. However, it is still a challenge because of the common complex design and synthesis. Herein, the bio-based monomer protocatechuic acid(PCA) was used as raw material, the catechol structure with high bonding and antibacterial properties was introduced into the flexible alkane segment of ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether(EGDE) through an efficient, and green method, and it was cured with isophorone diamine(IPDA) to prepare corresponding thermosets. The cured resins exhibited excellent allaround qualities, particularly in bonding and antibacterial. When 30% PCA was added to pure epoxy resin, the adhesion between substrate and coating increased from 4.40 MPa to 13.60 MPa and the antibacterial rate of coating against E. coli and S. aureus could approach 100%. All of this is due to the fact that the catechol structure present in PCA has the ability to interact with various substrates and alter the permeability of bacterial cell membranes. The architecture of this method offers a fresh approach to dealing with the issues of challenging raw material selection and complex synthesis techniques.

The Effect of Procrastination on Physical Exercise among College Students—The Chain Effect of Exercise Commitment and Action Control

background: Exercise procrastination is prevalent among college students, causing decline in physical fitness. It is imperative to investigate the mechanism affecting college students’ physical activity behaviors. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of procrastination on college students’ physical exercise behavior, and the chain mediation effects of exercise commitment and action control (AC), to provide a theoretical basis for interventions targeting physical exercise behavior among college students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted using convenience sampling. The General Procrastination Scale, Exercise Commitment Scale, Action Control Scale, and Physical Activity Rating Scale-3 questionnaires were used. Participants were 581 college students (age 19.27 ± 0.94 years; 243 males and 338 females). Statistical methods of regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were applied. Results: Procrastination, exercise commitment, and action control were found to be significant predictors of physical exercise behavior. Among these predictors, exercise commitment and action control showed full mediation effects in the relationship between procrastination and physical exercise behavior, and explained 25.48% and 30.77% of the total variance, respectively. The chain mediation effect of exercise commitment-action control was significant, accounting for 22.60% of the total variance, and the total indirect effect was 79.33%. Conclusion: Therefore, higher procrastination was associated with less participation in physical exercise behavior among college students. Improvements in exercise commitment and volitional decision-making ability for physical exercise behavior promoted physical exercise behavior, and increased exercise commitment promoted volitional decision-making ability among the students. Lone-Star retractor perineal exposure method for laparoscopic abdominal perineal resection of rectal cancer

bACKGROUND The abdominal perineal resection(APR),historically referred to as Mile’s proce-dure,stands as a time-honored surgical intervention for rectal cancer *** in surgical techniques and the advent of neoadjuvant therapies have significantly improved the rate of sphincter preservation among patients afflicted with rectal cancer,including those with ultralow rectal *** these improvements,APR maintains its irreplaceable role in the clinical landscape,particularly for cases involving low rectal cancer with encroachment on the external anal sphincter or levator ani *** perineal exposure stands as a pivotal phase in APR,given that the precision of this maneuver is directly correlated with both the safety of the surgery and the patient’s subse-quent long-term *** To evaluate the value of Lone-Star retractor(LSR)perineal exposure method in the treatment for laparoscopic APR of rectal *** We reviewed the records of 38 patients with rectal cancer at Anqing Municipal Hospital from January 2020 to December 2023,including 20 patients who underwent the APR procedure with a LSR perineal exposure method(LSR group)and 18 patients who underwent the APR procedure with a conventional perineal exposure method(control group).In the LSR group,following incision of the skin and subcutaneous tissue,the LSR was placed and dynamically adjusted according to the surgical plane to fully expose the perineal operative *** A total of 38 patients underwent laparoscopic APR,none of whom were found to have distant metastasis upon intraoperative *** blood loss,the postoperative hospital stays and the wound pain scores in the LSR group were significantly lower than those in the control group.A single surgeon completed the perineal operation significantly more often in the LSR group than in the control group(P<0.05).The incidence of infection via the perineal incision in the LSR group was significantly lower

A New Method for Deriving High-Vertical-Resolution Wind Vector Data from the L-band Radar Sounding System in China

High-vertical-resolution radiosonde wind data are highly valuable for describing the dynamics of the meso- and microscale atmosphere. However, the current algorithm used in China’s L-band radar sounding system for calculating high-vertical-resolution wind vectors excessively smooths the data, resulting in significant underestimation of the calculated kinetic energy of gravity waves compared to similar products from other countries, which greatly limits the effective utilization of the data. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel method to calculate high-vertical-resolution wind vectors that utilizes the elevation angle, azimuth angle, and slant range from L-band radar. In order to obtain wind data with a stable quality, a two-step automatic quality control procedure, including the RMSE-F (root-mean-square error F) test and elemental consistency test are first applied to the slant range data, to eliminate continuous erroneous data caused by unstable signals or radar malfunctions. Then, a wind calculation scheme based on a sliding second-order polynomial fitting is utilized to derive the high-vertical-resolution radiosonde wind vectors. The evaluation results demonstrate that the wind data obtained through the proposed method show a high level of consistency with the high-resolution wind data observed using the Vaisala Global Positioning System and the data observed by the new beidou Navigation Sounding System. The calculation of the kinetic energy of gravity waves in the recalculated wind data also reaches a level comparable to the Vaisala observations. © Institute of Atmospheric Physics/Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Science Press 2024.

Dear Editor,Coronaviruses have evolved a wide array of tactics to evade host antiviral *** host cells detect invading foreign nucleic acids including viral genome and viral replication intermediates,they activate interferon(IFN)signaling via cytoplasmic pattern recognition receptors(Kang et al.,2002;Kato et al.,2006).Remarkable stealth activities exhibited by coronaviruses are facilitated by a series of non-structural proteins(Nsps),such as Nsp15(Deng and baker,2018;Deng et al.,2019;Hackbart et al.,2020),which is a uridine-specific endoribonuclease that mediates evasion of host detection of viral double-stranded RNA(dsRNA)(bhardwaj et al.,2004;Deng et al.,2017;Frazier et al.,2021;Ivanov et al.,2004).Nsp15 targets a polyuridine[poly(U)]tract on the coronavirus negative strand RNA(Hackbart et al.,2020).Nsp15 limits the abundance and length of poly(U)within the negative strand RNA 5ʹ-extension by trimming down the initially synthesized poly(U)lead sequence to the optimal length that can suppress dsRNA formation but still serves as a template for poly(A)tail of the positive strand genome of the coronaviruses(Hofmann and brian,1991).
