Impact of land cover change on a mountain ecosystem and its services:case study from the Phobjikha valley,Bhutan

Introduction:Mountains occupy 24%of the global land surface and are home to 12%of the world’s population;they host the world’s principal biomes and supply a diverse array of ecosystem *** they are also highly sensitive to both natural and human induced changes,which can affect service provision meant for one third of *** research on impacts of land cover change from mountains at the local scale are limited,especially in developing countries,which poses a barrier to informed planning for sustainable *** being in the forefront as contributor towards global conservation goals,a case study following a systematic research framework considering quantitative,qualitative and geospatial tools was ***:Respondents identified and ranked 24 ecosystem services,among which the provisioning services were the most important,followed by cultural,regulating,and supporting *** was the most important land cover type for services,followed by marsh,scrub,water bodies,and *** area of forest declined by 2%and marsh by 7%over the 32-year period,suggesting a potential decrease in ecosystem services,which was also observed by the local ***:It was observed that 80%of the local people are still directly dependent on the diverse ecosystems for *** subtle,the decrease in land cover has implications for livelihoods of the people and the rich biodiversity of the *** communities for local development needs guidance for identifying trade-offs in land cover types in sustainable *** integrated and holistic approach focusing on both conservation and community development should be used to manage and develop the valley and the region ***:We recommend diversifying the limited livelihood strategies(potato farming and livestock grazing)to reduce the potential vulnerability of the local community and reduce the pressure on forest and *** land use planning

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are complex multifactorial disorders that include Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Considering that IBD is a genetic and multifactorial disease, we screened for the distribution dynamism of IBD pathogenic genetic variants (single nucleotide polymorphisms;SNPs) and risk factors in four (4) IBD pediatric patients, by integrating both clinical exome sequencing and computational statistical approaches, aiming to categorize IBD patients in CD and UC phenotype. To this end, we first aligned genomic read sequences of these IBD patients to hg19 human genome by using bowtie 2 package. Next, we performed genetic variant calling analysis in terms of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) for genes covered by at least 20 read genomic sequences. Finally, we checked for biological and genomic functions of genes exhibiting statistically significant genetic variant (SNPs) by introducing Fitcon genomic parameter. Findings showed Fitcon parameter as normalizing IBD patient’s population variability, as well as inducing a relative good clustering between IBD patients in terms of CD and UC phenotypes. Genomic analysis revealed a random distribution of risk factors and as well pathogenic SNPs genetic variants in the four IBD patient’s genome, claiming to be involved in: i) Metabolic disorders, ii) Autoimmune deficiencies;iii) Crohn’s disease pathways. Integration of genomic and computational statistical analysis supported a relative genetic variability regarding IBD patient population by processing IBD pathogenic SNP genetic variants as opposite to IBD risk factor variants. Interestingly, findings clearly allowed categorizing IBD patients in CD and UC phenotypes by applying Fitcon parameter in selecting IBD pathogenic genetic variants. Can Kponan Yam （Dioscorea cayenensis） Full Season Tuber Sprout If Planted？

In a completely randomized blocks （RCB） plot, we planted seed from the three segments of Kponan tubers： head, median and tail portions with control Krengle. Germination began 10 d and lasted 67 d. The mean sprouting rate of the Kponan full season harvest tuber was 78.1% compared to 94% in Krengle. However, the tuber germination was progressive from head to tail with a linear evolution of the top fragments with sprouting rate up to 90% similar to Krengle. The median and distal portions sprout two and three weeks later with final raising rates reaching 68% and 71%, respectively. The full season tuber of Kponan sprouts with a good rate gave good yields for any portion of the tuber. It had a sprouting gradient oriented from the proximal portion to the distal one, while yield was better for medium seeds. The sprouting delays two weeks between proximal and medium portions and three weeks between proximal and distal portions were acceptable with regards to the total cycle of eight to nine months period. Thus, its small tubers could be planted as well as the top portion of big tuber. In terms of yield, Kponan medium seed gave the best yield 34.25 t/ha and the whole Kponan tuber yield was more than Krengle. That led to a better multiplication factor for Kponan full season tuber. The type of tuber, if available, could be used as seed for yam production. That could improve its distribution and contribute to food security.

Doppler Ultrasound Abnormalities of the Lower Limbs in Patients with Diabetic Foot at the Yopougon University Hospital in Ivory Coast

Background: Diabetic foot is a frequent complication of diabetes, of multifactorial origin, associating nervous and/or circulatory disorders to which infection is often added. Its care is multidisciplinary and requires coordination between different actors. In this context, arterial doppler ultrasound is essential in the diagnosis of diabetic arteriopathy and participates in therapeutic decision-making. The aim of this study was to describe the abnormalities found on Doppler ultrasonography of patients hospitalized for the diabetic foot in the Ivory Coast. Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study including 235 patients hospitalized for the diabetic foot in the Endocrinology department of the Yopougon University Hospital from February 2002 to December 2015. All records of patients who performed arterial Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs were selected and the various abnormalities were described. Results: The sex ratio (M/F) was 1.1 (124 men to 111 women). The predominant age group was 61.2 years. Type 2 diabetes was found in 97.4% of cases. The average evolution of diabetes was 8.9 years with extremes of 1 and 32 years. Wet gangrene was the most common type of lesion found in 75.8% of cases. On ultrasonography, 98.7% of the patients had an arterial abnormality of the lower limbs. It was bilateral in 62.2% of cases, dominated by atheromatous overloads and mediacalcosis in 46.4% and 43.8% of cases, respectively. Arterial stenosis was lesions hemodynamically found in 76.3% of cases and arterial occlusions in 32.7% of cases. The amputation rate was 72.7%. Conclusion: This study shows the high frequency of arterial abnormalities in patients with the diabetic foot with a predominantly distal involvement. Arterial Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs remains an essential tool in the care of diabetic foot. This easily accessible, non-invasive examination has a key role in therapeutic decision-making.

Prospects for Minimizing the Potential Environmental Impacts of the Hydro-Agricultural Dam of M’Bahiakro(Cote d’Ivoire)

This study aims at characterizing the physical environment and suggesting solutions for a better management of the hydro-agricultural dam of M’Bahiakro which is being constructed over the N’Zi River and is the first inflatable dam in Cote d’Ivoire. In this survey, data related to hydrology, characteristics of the dam and the irrigated rice production area were obtained with the Water Resources Agency and the National Office of Rice Development of Cote d’Ivoire. Physicochemical parameters of the N’Zi River were collected seasonally at three monitoring stations. Results showed that the N’Zi River is characterized by a high water level period from April to November and a low water level period from November to April. The gap between the low flows and the high flows is important (about 206 m3/s on average). The annual average flow is 40 m3/s with a standard deviation of 32.52 m3/s and a variation coefficient of 0.88. The SAR average value (1.63) and the average conductivity (78.44 μS/cm) showed that waters of the N’Zi River are of high quality to be used for irrigation. Suspended sediment concentrations do not present significant difference along the river. But the seasonal variations are important;they are higher during the rainy seasons (45.8 mg/L on average) than in the dry seasons (17.7 mg/L on average). The annual solid flux of the N’Zi River is 41897 tons, i.e. 15810 m3 of sediments. The annual sediment flux is important and can lead to high depositions in the line-shaped reservoir of the dam and that calls for attention to control the silting up of the reservoir. Great efforts concerning interdisciplinary approaches, as well as extensive and intensive field work are needed in order to better manage the hydro-agricultural dam of M’Bahiakro.

The study of Birimian granitoids is of great importance because it allows us to understand the architecture of the West African crust and the processes that shaped it. In order to contribute to the improvement of knowledge on the geodynamic context of the emplacement of certain granitoids of the West African craton, this article addresses some essential problems of the Birimian, namely distinguishing the real nature of the magmas and the mechanisms that generated this Birimian crust. On the West African craton, there are intrusive granites in volcano-sedimentary furrows, in meta-sedimentary basins and granites that form batholiths separating these structures. To provide an answer to this scientific concern, we conducted a comparative study of the granitoids of the Comoé basin (Tiassalé region) and those of the large batholith of Ferkessédougou (Daloa region). From this study, it appears that these Birimian granitoids have been identified as granites, granodiorites and tonalites in the Tiassalé region while in Daloa, they are assimilated to anatexites and granites. They present very diverse aspects and contexts of emplacement: the granitoids of the Comoé basin have characteristics of type I granite, indicating direct crystallization of mantle magmas in a syntectonic emplacement, while in the Daloa region, some granitoids are magmatic, others migmatitic or metasomatic, reflecting a certain complexity relating to their genesis.

Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load of Juice from Edible Wild Fruits (Adansonia digitata, Tamarindus indica and Parkia biglobosa) Consumed in Cote d’Ivoire

The diabetes mellitus is a public health problem in C?te d’Ivoire. The Glycemic index (GI) and the Glycemic load (GL) determination of commonly consumed foods such as juice fruits is an alternative to prevent metabolic diseases. This study carried out three wild fruits locally named Baobab (Adansonia digitata), Tomi (Tamarindus indica) and Néré (Parkia biglobosa) collected at maturity stage. The juices from the pulp of fruits have been elaborated, pasteurized, submitted to microbiological and physicochemical analysis before GIs/GLs determination. Ten healthy subjects with body mass index and age average respectively 21.57 ± 1.06 and 28 ± 2 years old tested the three juices and glucose (50 g) as reference food. Blood samples have been collected at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 min after foods consumption. The GIs/GLs has been determined according to ISO/FDI 26642:2010 protocol. Data showed that pasteurized juices has a weak microbiologic load (1.0102 - 2.4102 of Mesophylls Aerobic Germs) and not contain pathogen germs. The GI and GL of Néré juice are high with respective values of 89.54 ± 1.63 and 29.22 ± 4.09 whereas those of Baobab and Tomi juice are moderate with respective GI/GL values of 66.48 ± 2.12/13.24 ± 1.99 and 60.41 ± 2.63/12.87 ± 1.67. The juice of Néré should be consumed occasionally when those of Baobab and Tomi should be consumed with moderation. It would be suitable to know more about the GI and GL of all the juice fruits produced locally so as to prevent efficiently diabetes mellitus in the country.

Characterization of the Origin of Pollutants in Groundwater from Biostatistical Tests:The Case of Catchment Ehania,South-Eastern Cote d’Ivoire

The threat of agro-industrial exploitations on the quality of groundwater resources has become a major concern for the world’s population, mainly in agricultural areas. To solve this problem, several methods such as vulnerability to pollutants and statistics methods, have been adopted to protect these groundwaters. In this study, statistical tests were used to determine the likely source of pollutants in the groundwater resources. First, we made a comparative analysis and then analyzed pollutants parameters using Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) which allows basic on the similarity to help out any correlation between the physic-chemical parameters. To validate these results, a land use map was developed to identify the sources of pollutants in production functions of different activities taking place on the catchment area. The results indicate very high levels of certain pollutants such as NO3-, Cl- and SO42- with generally higher than World Health Organization (WHO) standards values. These high levels observed could be attributed to the generally free nature of aquifers alteration and sedimentary formations in areas of high agro-industrial production. The analysis of the data from SOM method reveals a strong correlation between pollutants (NO3-, SO42-,Cl- ) and conductivity showing the likely origin of these surface pollutants,an origin that is linked to the existence of larges agro-industrials exploitations. These results are reinforced by those of the overlay map of the sampling sites on the land use map, which shows a strong coincidence between high values of pollutants and production areas of the pollutants that are agro-industrial exploitations. These areas of coincidence are observed in the north where found banana’s industrials plantations that are less visible and mostly in the southwest part where is one of the largest oil palm plantations in the world (36,000 hectares).

Primary Hyperparathyroidism Revealed by Impaired Renal Function with Persistent Elevation of Parathormon (PTH) and Normal Calcemia after Surgical Removal of the Parathyroid Adenoma

Introduction: The curative management of primary hyperparathyroidism is based on surgery. We report the case of a patient presenting with elevated parathormone despite surgical removal of the parathyroid adenoma. Observation: A 48-year-old patient presented for more than 6 months with significant weight loss, polyuria with polydipsia and impaired renal function. The assessment carried out revealed hypercalcaemia at 155 mg/L with hypophastetaemia at 24 mg/L and an elevation of the parathyroid hormone at 218.9 pg/ml. Cervical ultrasound showed a mass at the expense of the lower left parathyroid gland. These results made it possible to conclude primary hyperparathyroidism by parathyroid adenoma which was supported surgically. The postoperative biological assessment revealed a normocalcemia at 85 mg/L associated with an increase in parathormone (PTH) at 271.9 pg/ml. In front of the normalization of calcemia in the subsequent controls and the amendment of all the signs, monitoring was carried out. 9 months after surgery, spontaneous normalization of PTH was observed at 38.4 pg/ml with normal serum calcium at 90 mg/l. Discussion: Primary hyperparathyroidism can be revealed by other manifestations. Post-operative follow-up is generally simple with normalization of PTH and serum calcium. However, there may persist an elevation of PTH with normal self-limiting calcemia.

Urogenital impalement trauma is a particular form of penetrating trauma to the pelvis. They are rare, spectacular or dramatic because they can be responsible for serious vascular and/or visceral lesions. This study reports a case of hypogastric impalement in a 19-year-old young man that caused musculoaponeurotic and urogenital lesions. Emergency surgical exploration was carried out urgently by a multidisciplinary team.
