Perfusion of individual tissues is a basic physiological process that is necessary to sustain oxygenation and nutrition at a cellular level. Ischemia, or the insuff iciency of perfusion, is a common mechanism for tissue death or degeneration, and at a lower threshold, a mechanism for the generation of sensory signalling including pain. It is of considerable interest to study perfusion of pe- ripheral abdominal tissues in a variety of circumstances. Microvascular disease of the abdominal organs has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of disorders, including peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease and chest pain. The basic principle of laser Doppler perfusion monitoring (LDPM) is to analyze changes in the spectrum of light reflected from tissues as a response to a beam of monochromatic laser light emitted. It reflects the total local microcirculatory blood perfusion, including perfusion in capillaries, arterioles, venules and shunts. During the last 20-25 years, numerous studies have been performed in different parts of the gastroin-testinal (GI) tract using LDPM. In recent years we have developed a multi-modal catheter device which includes a laser Doppler probe, with the intent primarily to investigate patients suffering from functional chest pain of presumed oesophageal origin. Preliminary studies show the feasibility of incorporating LDPM into such catheters for performing physiological studies in the GI tract. LDPM has emerged as a research and clinical tool in preference to other methods; but, it is important to be aware of its limitations and account for them when reporting results.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the coverage of the scientific literature in Scopus and Web of Science from the perspective of research ***/methodology/approach: The academic communities of Norway have agreed on certain criteria for what should be included as original research publications in research evaluation and funding contexts. These criteria have been applied since 2004 in a comprehensive bibliographic database called the Norwegian Science Index(NSI). The relative coverages of Scopus and Web of Science are compared with regard to publication type, field of research and ***: Our results show that Scopus covers 72 percent of the total Norwegian scientific and scholarly publication output in 2015 and 2016, while the corresponding figure for Web of Science Core Collection is 69 percent. The coverages are most comprehensive in medicine and health(89 and 87 percent) and in the natural sciences and technology(85 and 84 percent). The social sciences(48 percent in Scopus and 40 percent in Web of Science Core Collection) and particularly the humanities(27 and 23 percent) are much less covered in the two international data sources. Research limitation: Comparing with data from only one country is a limitation of the study, but the criteria used to define a country's scientific output as well as the identification of patterns of field-dependent partial representations in Scopus and Web of Science should be recognizable and useful also for other countries. Originality/value: The novelty of this study is the criteria-based approach to studying coverage problems in the two data sources.

Background:To investigate the topographic measurements and densitometry of corneas in Wilson’s disease(WD)patients with or without a Kayser-Fleischer ring(KF-r)compared to healthy ***:This cross-sectional study included 20 WD patients without a KF-r(group I),18 WD patients with a KF-r(group II),and 20 age-matched controls(group III).The Pentacam high resolution imaging system is used to determine corneal topographic measurements and ***:Mean age for groups I,II and III was 25.40±6.43 years(14-36 years),25.38±6.96 years(16-39 years),23.60±6.56 years(17-35 years),respectively(P=0.623).There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of the anterior corneal densitometry values(P>0.05),while the 6-10mm and 10-12 mm mid stroma and the 2-6 mm,6-10 mm,and 10-12 mm posterior corneal densitometry values in group II were significantly higher than those in groups I and III(for all values,P<0.05).However,the 10-12mm posterior corneal densitometry values in group I were also significantly higher than those in group III(P=0.038).The central corneal thickness(CCT),thinnest corneal thickness(tCT),and corneal volume(CV)values in groups I and II were significantly lower than those in group III(for CCT values,P=0.011 and P=0.009;for tCT values,P=0.010 and P=0.005;for CV values,P=0.043 and P=0.029).Conclusion:In WD patients with a KF-r,corneal transparency decreased in the peripheral posterior and mid stromal corneal layers;for these patients,corneal transparency may be impaired not only in the peripheral cornea but also in the paracentral cornea.

Background Phlegmonous and complicated appendicitis represent independent entities depending on hereditary immuno-logical mechanisms. However, clinically there are no means to distinguish uncomplicated phlegmonous from complicated appendicitis. The ability to distinguish these two forms of appendicitis is relevant as current attempts are to treat both forms of the disease differently. The aim of the present study was to investigate differences in white blood cell counts (WBCs) in these conditions to identify areas of interest for future molecular studies. Methods White blood cell counts of patients aged between 7 and 14 years who underwent appendectomy from January 2008 to June 2016 were investigated with special reference to particular cellular subpopulations. Results A total of 647 children were included in the study. Within distinct inflammatory patterns, significant eosinophilia and basophilia were found in phlegmonous inflammation compared with complicated inflammation (0.11±0.19×109/L vs. 0.046±0.104×109/L, P<0.0001, and 0.033±0.031×109/L vs. 0.028±0.024×109/L, P<0.001). Conclusions Compared with complicated disease, phlegmonous appendicitis seems to depend primarily on eosinophil inflam-mation. This observation is stable over time and indicates a direction for investigation of underlying genetic prerequisites.

Endosonography is a useful tool for studying the morphology and motor function of the gastrointestinal tract. Intraluminal ultrasonography is the common denomination of ultrasound examinations using intracorporal transducers which are inserted into the GI tract. Thus, the visceral wall and adjacent structures can be imaged in detail. This review describes the usefulness of endosonography in gastroenterology, in particular with respect to studies of the biomechanical and motor function of the gastrointestinal tract. New techniques such as 3-D EUS, elastography and strain rate imaging are discussed.
